'Man of Steel' Trailer Breakdown and Analysis

What does the extended trailer tell us about the movie?

By now you should have seen the latest trailer for 'Man of Steel.' These types of trailers need to be watched over and over. Mainly because we get so excited and can't help not to. Upon watching it, what does it tell us about the movie besides the tone?

Bearded Superman in Explosion out at Sea

Remember when we saw bearded Superman with a heavy sweater. He looked like a fisherman or something. In the opening scenes, we see him casually floating in the water with a fierce looking fire blazing above the surface.

Superman's Powers Develop When He's a Kid

No Caption Provided

In the different interpretations of Superman over the years, when he got his powers has varied. At one point, he was an infant, flying around the orphanage before Ma and Pa came back and adopted him. In other tellings, it wasn't until later in his teens he started showing his super-abilities.

In the trailer, we hear a very young Clark talking about how the world is too big. Ma can be heard telling him to focus on her voice. She tells him to make it small. We can assume that his senses are on overload.

This could also tell us why he decides to go on his bearded fishing expedition. Perhaps he just needs to get away from most people and the busy world around. Or he could be headed north to set up the Fortress of Solitude.

Struggling with a Secret Identity

No Caption Provided

In the different origins, Superman has tried to use his power for good but needs to guard his identity at the same time. When a bus goes crashing into a river, Clark has to use his powers to save lives. This tells us that he does indeed use them before becoming an adult. We also hear a voiceover of a mother of another child saying her son saw what Clark did. It'll take some fast thinking to get out of this one. Could the kid be Pete Ross who will later say he was confused or made it up in order to help keep Clark's secret?

Pa Gives Clark the Talk

We know that Clark isn't going to be whisked off to a government lab (not yet). We see Pa emphasizing the importance of keeping his abilities a secret. Clark is already a hero. He can't help but use his abilities for good. He says he couldn't just sit back and do nothing. When Clark asks if he was just supposed to "let them die," Pa responds with, "Maybe."

Fortress of Solitude and Answers from Jor-El

Clark will have a Fortress of Solitude. We see him in a cavern/hallway carved under the snow. He's seen "talking" to someone. He says he has a lot of questions including where he comes from. We can assume he's talking to a holo-projection of Jor-El.

The crystals seen in the previous movies also appears different. This must be when he finds out everything about himself and his heritage.

Where Does the Costume Come From?

We've seen in some origins that Ma made the costume for Clark. She's even made his cape from a baby blanket that was in his ship. Is the costume man-made or is it from Krypton?

Looks like he gets it during his time at the Fortress of Solitude. After his first scene there in the trailer, we then get our first glimpse of him in costume walking through the snow. Looks like whatever Kryptonian technology allows Clark to speak to Jor-El also provides his new wardrobe.

Could it also be that he doesn't know how to fly just yet? It's going to be a long walk home.

First Flight?

Once he has his costume, he slowly focuses and prepares to fly. It's not the smoothest take off. He leaves a mark on the ground. Will it always be like this or will he improve on his take off later?

There's always been a question of how he's actually able to fly. You can see the ground tremble around him as if he's manipulating gravity in some way. But of course we shouldn't worry about that and just enjoy how cool it looks.

The Destruction of...?

No Caption Provided

At first you think we're getting a glimpse of Krypton's last days. It's pretty intense. It appears as if a beam is shooting down. Buildings are getting destroyed and you can see some molten lava coming to the surface. But looking more carefully, you see regular vehicles. There's a bus with normal Earth numbers. I seriously doubt Krypton had regular cars with wheels. Is this Metropolis or some other city getting utterly destroyed?

Jor-El and Lara

The immediate next scene shows young Kal-El about to get his send off. This is why it'd be easy to think we just saw Krypton getting destroyed.

Where Did the Ship Land?

No Caption Provided

It always seemed odd that a spaceship could crash on Earth and no one would know.

After the scene of Krypton's destruction, we do see a ship almost casually arrive in the Kent's yard. Is this when Kal-El first arrived or could it be another Kryptonian in search of...?

Kneel Before Zod

You've probably heard that Michael Shannon is Zod.

Looks like there will be some kneeling involved. Superman appears to get punched in the gut or something and is spitting out as he falls to his knees. If this is early in his career, he might not be ready to face another Kryptonian.

Superman or Super-Menace?

No Caption Provided

From the recently released poster, we see Superman allowing himself to be taken into custody. We all know he could easily escape from them. It's absurd that they think a pair of handcuffs are necessary, unless they were made of Kryptonite (but that would kill him). It must be that Superman is willing to go along to prove that he is not a threat. Where he's being taken to and who he'll be talking to remains to be seen.

Death of Pa?

No Caption Provided

Sometimes his parents are alive. Sometimes one is. Currently in comics, they're both dead.

Could it be that Pa is dead? Superman is seen saying his goodbyes to Ma, as he likely is about to journey off to the real world.

Lois Lane

No Caption Provided

Some of us have been wondering if Lois was going to have dark hair or not since Amy Adams was portraying her.

This scene takes place with the Army pointing guns and tanks at him. He mentions his father saying if the world found out who he really was, they'd reject him. This is why he allows himself to be taken in. He wants to show that he is not a threat to them.

Here's the trailer one more time:

Man of Steel opens on June 14, 2013.
