Madman Atomic Comics #17 REVIEWED, All Good Things...

G-Man reviews the final issue of the series.

"All good things must come to an end."  Back in May, it was announced that Madman Atomic Comics would be coming to an end.  The fact that I'm a huge Madman fan made me dread the day that the final issue hit the stands.  Part of me wanted to avoid reading this issue right away so I would still have a "new" issue of Madman that I haven't read.  But I decided to read it and give it a review.

The good news is Madman is not going away forever.  If you watch my interview with Mike Allred at San Diego Comic-Con, you can hear what he has to say on this.  I enjoyed the issue but, in my opinion, it wasn't Frank 'Madman' Einstein's best adventure.  In some ways, it was a fitting end.  It was nice having the Atomics present and joining with The Gear.  Seeing Red Rocket 7 was pretty rad as well.  The series may have ended but it's not necessarily the end for the characters.

As with all Madman comics, the art and color are simply amazing.  I have no idea how Mike and Laura Allred do it time and time again.  It's always a feast for your eyes when you look upon their work.  There's a reason that I love their work so much.  I honestly feel you should seek out a Madman trade and see what they're doing if you haven't already.

For now, all we can do is sit back and wait.  The Allreds definitely have other projects coming.  And as mentioned, we will see the return of Madman someday soon.

If you get ink done. That's dedication. Throughout the whole review I could hear the lament in your voice.

I like that picture in space. I know that album cover. It was even used in a Futurama episode. The one where bender learned to cook from a bum, I believe.

Since I just started reading Madman, I still have about a year of buying books and catching up to do.
But its sad to see such a unique character come to an end, even if its only for a while.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but its like Frank's innocence and curiosity make him unlike any other comic book heroes out there today.  I can relate to him, we all can.

Farewell Frank Einstein.

That's one of the many great things I like about Mike Allred, he also throws in plenty of pop culture references, especially in terms of music.  Like the cover to the Beatles' Abbey Road, one of the characters is named Mott The Hoople (an actual band) and now the Dark Side of The Moon!  Great stuff.

To top it off as you often point out, G-Man, both he and his wife really really have a great art style, I can't think of anyone to compare them to not that anyone can compare as it is.  Mike Allred draws women in a very appealing way, very hard to describe.   The colors they use are so very very vibrant, which is just icing on the cake.

I still want to see those prints you bought from Mike Allred at the Sand Diego Comic Con!!  Love the shirt!  I so so so need to get many trades and back issues of Madman.  I'm also a huge fan.  It seems with Madman the title survives for awhile then it goes away, comes back, survives then goes away again.  *frustrating*

It appears Frank gets fried!  Hhhmmm.... I hope he returns soon.   Very soon!

@TheBug: I do think his innocence is part of his appeal.  The fact that he had a questionable past before his death and resurrection makes him more complex.

@Decept-O: The print I got was for the cover to Madman Comics #8.  I got that one since I own the original artwork for page 12.

I'll definitely pick up the trades and see what Madman is all about.
