Lex Luthor and Alfred Have been Cast in the Upcoming Superman/Batman Film

What do you think of this casting?

It's official. Lex Luthor will be appearing in the upcoming untitled Superman/Batman movie. He's not the only one, Alfred Pennyworth will be in the movie as well.

No Caption Provided

Who will portray these two characters?

It's been announced that Jesse Eisenberg will play Lex and Jeremy Irons will be Alfred.

No Caption Provided

Snyder stated, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”

The director added, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

@superbat420: Now You See Me was one of the worst movies of 2013. You can ask any movie critic worth their salt. I am not a "hater", the simple fact that a man-child like Eisenberg was cast as the charismatic Lex Luthor is enough to say this movie will most likely flop.

Since when was a movie critic's opinion fact? I didn't like the movie either but the support for your argument is total BS. The movie had a mixed critical reaction, you're trying to make it sound like it was universally panned by critics when I don't think it was on any critics "Worth Of" lists that I've seen.

DC/WB can't hide behind that defense forever. It's not just Ben Affleck that has to prove himself, but Gal and Jesse too. In TDK is was just one actor that had too, this movie has 3. They have a lot of hard work to do.

I tried caring but then I remembered that casting an actually good actor in a Zack Snyder-helmed, Henry Cavill-starred Superman movie is probably a good thing, because that nonsense flopped HARD the first time.

Adding more good actors cannot be bad.

@silverpool: It was riddled with plot holes, inconsistencies, just AWFUL acting, and a plot that tried to be overly complex like Inception, but in the end fell on it's face and made no sense.

It's not an opinion. It's a fact. The movie was not good, just like Batman and Robin was not good.

Watch that video and see Eisenberg is not that bad of a choice he just needs to gain some weight and add some base to his voice.

For all of you who are saying Jesse Eisenberg is "too young", just so you know, he's is only five months younger than Henry "Superman" Cavil while Ben Afflec is ten years older

I agree Im open to change,I didn't like the idea as Ben as Batman because I grew up with Christian Bale as my batman but as time went on I could see him in the suit. But I mean if they wanted Talented actors to play the roles they would of hired them I guess or they would of have to pay them more maybe?I think Gal Gadot is average to below average actress but I guess you don't have to be a great actor get the role, and I honestly dont she'll impress me.I'll wait until the trailers start coming in first

Jesse Eisenburg? Now there's a surprise. Seems a little young for the role if you ask me...

He's actually the same age as Henry Cavill

I like Jeremy Irons as Alfred for sure. Eisenberg as Lex? Hm, all the other characters he's played have been wimps so he's going to have to man up if he's going to play it right.

Really? Cos the only role I can recall when he was like that was Zombieland besides that the dude's been great at playing a dude that while not physically threatening has you completely aware right away he's the smartest guy in the room and I feel that bodes well for a Lex Luthor personality wise. Only problem is whenever I think Lex I think Clancy Brown's deep intimidating voice and well Eisenberg is kind of on the opposite side of the voice spectrum.

They are really just all over the place for this movie, and truthfully, I think we all secretly know that this movie is going to suck. The first movie sucked because it was just all over the place with really no continuity whatsoever. With the choice of Eisenberg going for the Clark/Lex silver age relationship would work, except for the fact that they're casting an older Batman (I however have faith that Affleck will do a great job. I'm sure Eisenbeg will do a great job as well. Casting Cranston as Luthor honestly would have been a stupid move because they would be choosing him because of his current it status and the fact that people hi that he looks like Lex; those are both stupid reasons.

At first, I was really mad about Eisenberg's casting. However, the more I think about it the more I feel like it might actually work. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how he does.

Lex Luthor....AGAIN?! SERIOUSLY?!

Do movie writers even understand, even COMPREHEND, that Superman does, in fact, have other villains besides Luthor?

The physical size of the actor playing Lex is irrelevant. He's not getting in to a fist fight with anyone, especially not Superman or Batman. Lex Luthor is THE most dangerous intellect. It all depends on the quality of the script and direction. Eisenberg is a quality actor and can do a fantastic job if the other elements are up to the task.

The million dollar question is: "How involved will Geoff Johns be?" An executive producer can be very involved or not at all. Since he isn't known for his financial nous or film making ability, so he's obviously there as DC's Chief Creative Officer. Does he get to approve the script? Is he there as a consultant? Is he there to tell Zack Snyder when Batman and Superman no longer feel like Batman and Superman? Will Johns be on set when they are filming? My feeling is that he's there to right the ship. WB/DC saw something they didn't like so the re-write got order, the movie delayed, and now Johns is EP. It could be an extremely smart move.

Hmm...They might be looking for a Heath Ledger/The Joker dynamic in this film; Jesse can portray that outcast, seemingly intelligent, gonna snap any second character, so we'll just have to wait and see how it pans out :)

Bald Jesse (Dragonborn posted it, post #39) reminds me of Scott from Austin Powers. Anyone else think so?

Yeah I saw that too. Geoff Johns does know these characters just as Synder. It would be added a bonus. I bet he could have the same powers as Ben Affleck or not.

Michael Rosenbaum worked for Smallvill because it took place during the early years. That and he still had the intimidating confidence Lex has, so every time we saw him standing across from Clark, we could tell he knew something or was working something out in his head.

Now, with Jesse, pretty much just go watch Now You See Me because, that's pretty much what you'd expect from his Lex Luthor; sort of. His character in that was meant to be confident in every situation because he thought he was in control and when you're that in control and that confident it's bound to be somewhat intimidating. Except, I just didn't see that whenever he was face to face with Mark Ruffalo. Nothing about him was intimidating to me. Yea, he pulls off the smart person, but that's about it. I feel like I'll be looking at a High School Jock standing in front of the High School Nerd. Yea, the jock could stomp the nerd's brains out, but the nerd will probably hack all of his stuff later.

Idk. Too CWish.

Am pretty sure he can do it, especially because they are gonna show a younger street smart Lex who makes it as a billionaire at a very young age, and who else can do that other than one of the only actors who as already played that type of a role before (hint: Social Network) yes Jesse Eisenberg. Although his appearance was the only thing that was bothering me, so I took it upon myself to do some photoshop work and to my surprise the end results actually looked like a legit picture of Lex Luthor ! Now i am not admiring my own photoshop skills (maybe I am lol) but the guy actually looks like how a younger Lex Luthor would look like. Now the only thing that's remaining is his physique which everyone knows is easily changeable for hollywood actors, so I am just gonna wait for the movie to come out before judging him. He's either gonna end up becoming a really good Lex or a very shitty one.

That is a very strange casting for Lex indeed, he can probably look the part but.. I've only seen this guy play wimps before, it's gonna be hard to get that image out of my head - the only way I can see that happening if he plays the character EXTREMELY well. I try not to judge until i've seen it though but.. My hopes aren't high for this one.
