Ledger Fans Demand That The Joker Retires

They have a petition. They must mean business.

Are You Serious?
Are You Serious?
A group of die hard Heath Ledger fans are demanding that the Joker be retired from all movies permanently.  How about that?

CNN reported about the website, The Ultimate Joker, that has started a petition to prevent the Joker from ever appearing in another movie.
"We think Heath deserves this honor," the site's team leader, Fer Barbella told CNN over the phone from Buenos Aires. "He is the ultimate Joker.  We are Batman fans from the comics and from the movies.  After we saw 'The Dark Knight' we thought this Joker was really the best. It deserves to be withdrawn from any Batman sequels."
They also compare it to the retiring of Michael Jordan's #23 jersey after he retired from the Chicago Bulls.  When they have 50,000 names, they plan on approaching Warner Bros. (they currently have 4461 supporters).

We already discussed here whether or not someone else could fill the Joker's shoes.  Yes, Ledger was great.  I think the idea of the Joker never appearing in another movie is over the top.  I just don't see it happening.  If Warner Bros. can find the right person and make money, there's no way they wouldn't use the Joker.  50,000 is a lot of people but how many people saw the movie?  How many would see another movie eventually with the Joker?  It's tragic what happened but as they say, the show must go on.

And why stop at movies?  What about cartoons and video games.  Maybe we shouldn't see him in comics either because it'd be a reminder.

Pfft, what about when Gretsky retired? But on topic...

That's stupid. You can't ban the Joker. He's the main Batman villain, it just isn't Batman without Mr. J.

I would be pissed if Heath portrayed Joker a second time, not necessarily because he did a bad job but because anyone who knows the Joker knows that no one man can play the Joker twice. His Super Sanity forces him to reinvent himself every so often, sometimes daily. Heck, he has had plastic surgery multiple times to go with his new personas. To think that one person could encapsulate a man who is completely unpredictable is ridiculous. The only reason why Mark Hamill works as the Joker is because you never have to see him. True Joker fans will recognize that the Joker is too big for one man to play.

That said, I did quite enjoy Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker.

Also, that Website is horrendously un-Joker.

No offense to Heath (may he Rest in Peace) but...HE DID ONE GOOD ROLE!!!!!

His portrayal of The Joker was amazing but besides that.... what else did he do that was amazing and memorable? I can't think of anything.... he was a B List actor going into this movie, this was the movie that was going to make him an A list actor but sadly he died before he could bask in that glory. He was great in The Dark Knight but he wasn't that great of an actor and he certainly isn't good enough to eliminate all other portrayals if the Joker in the future.  Micheal Keaton was a great Batman, but just because he was great does that mean no other actor should have portrayed Batman because if that was the case we would have never gotten Christan Bale.

" This is just stupid. Yes Heath did a great job, yes it was super unexpected and it is tragic that he died......but he is NOT the joker. It was a part he played. If Christian Bale died would we cry no more Batman. Chris Reeves is dead......but yet Superman goes on. Gene Wilder IS the best Willy Wonka ever yet we let Johnny Deep have a shot. So they are telling me that if Johnny "Creepy ass" Deep wanted to play the Joker....they wouldn't be for that? Heath has had two good roles in his whole career, I don't see them saying no one else should play a gay cowboy.  "

LOL  Agreed

Did we retire Superman when two actors playing him died?  Its Silly.  He was a good actor not the best actor of our generation.

Just because he played him, doesn't mean he has full rights of him. I don't expect him to be in any more Chris Nolan movies, but I belive he should still be in everything else including the next Batman movie series.

I should make one of these where no person can voice Mark Hamill as the Joker. Joking, but at least mine's more reasonable.

I understand why people like Heath because as you said he was more of a "mad man" and in general just darker. I'm a Nicholson fan and maybe it's just a generation thing why I like the other two with Keaton more.

This is absolutely ridiculous! Heath Ledger was great as the Joker, but if they can find another actor to do it just as well as he did, go ahead.

Heath's performance was phenomenal and aside from perhaps Mark Hamill, he's definitely the best Joker thus far, but "retiring" the Joker forever is absurd.

And no, I don't care that this is about a year old.

Fanboi's have always been kinda pathetic to a varying degree. This is a special kind of pathetic though. Well perhaps not pathetic but a little over-emotional perhaps.

Heath did a good job, you can attest that to the success of the movie. I'd agree that perhaps more people went to see it originally because of his tragic death. But if the movie was bad the audience numbers would have tanked in the following weeks. Besides all this stuff about their never being a better Joker blah blah, big shoes to fill etc is exactly what Heath went through when they compared him to Jack Nicolson.

And if you really look at Heath's performance you can see the influence from previous Jokers in it. Especially Mark Hamil's voice acting. The Joker is still an evolving character in the movie medium imo, to shut him out now will rob a lot more input. Everyone has their favorite Joker version, from different writers, artists, actors.

I do agree they shouldn't use him again in this particular franchise, and in all honesty, they don't need to, The Dark Knight summed up the Batman/Joker relationship very well imo. Especially Joker's speech at the end.

PS: never thought Christopher Reeves was all that great of an actor either, but he was still a good superman. I mean his Clark Kent is a point of reference.

Heheh, I remember an 80s commercial for Tim Burton's Batman in which they either CGed or masked some guy in a car. He was supposed to look like the Joker, but ended up looking like Jay Leno.

I agree that it's silly to put a stop to all movie-Joker roles, or any Joker roles in any media, because Heatho had passed away; but I wholeheartedly agree on the side note that his Joker should not be replaced with CGI or another actor in Nolan's batcanon. I will refuse to watch any more of Nolan's Batman films if he replaces his Joker.

Otherwise, I don't think a death should stop someone else giving The Joker their voice or acting abilities; just not in Nolan's trilogy.

Yayaoi & I really disliked Heath as the Joker. The lipsmacking, the Beetlejuice costume & makeup, the unkempt appearance, the lack of bad humor & laughing, he was like some kind of Marty-Stew fanfic.

What a bunch of bullshit. So the character should now be permanently removed because an actor who portrayed him died?

All right. Let's do the same to James Bond after Sean Connery dies. I'm sure that'll work out well too.

Yes this was a great production of our favorite psychopathic clown, but does he deserve to be retired from the films? Heck no, sure he was evil as sin, but Ledger just dipped his feet into the cup that is filled with the joker's madness. The Joker graphic novel that came out back in October really showed how horrible a character the Joker is, made me absolutely loathe the character while i was reading it, the story was kinda meh, but it captured his chaotic nature quiet well. I for one would like to someday see either this or the Killing Joke made into R Rated films as I believe they could 1 up The Dark Knight in joker performance

Give me a break. Heath's joker was great- fine.

Whoop-ie. I was sad he died, BUT HE DIED. Life happens. We move on. Give me a break. I think it would be more honorable to his memory to keep Joker alive on the big (or small?) screen! Keep what he started going, for crying out loud.

The Joker shouldn't have a main part of anything in the next movies. But I think a glimspe of him should be allowed (like Scarecrow in the Dark Knight). The Joker is Arkum, you know? It makes sense. Its the only way to finally graduate Nolan's Batman from cool, to I'm Batman, I know countless forms of fighting, I can teach any college class on anything, and I'm actually a good detective, for crying out loud. I mean, come on.

I think have a Dick Grayson (not ROBIN!) would be good also. That's how the next movie starts. Bruce is mostly preoccupied with thoughts concerning his change because of the Joker, internal stuff, and he's at a circus to do some charity work or something. The Flying Graysons are there.

Eventually, Bruce takes Dick under his wing.

After the whole movie (which Dick Grayson plays almost no part in- less the Alfred!) Dick Grayson... discoverd the Bat cave.

Then that's that. Nice and simple. Then the next movie (so the 4th, if they make one) they can skip ahead 5 years. Then they may be able to solve some superman/justice league continuity issues!

LOL that they will... sad too cause he was kinda average, but then Supes is kinda average. The films were not bad for their time, nothing special, but being the first of the Superman films there was not a great deal they could go on.
