Ledger Fans Demand That The Joker Retires

They have a petition. They must mean business.

Are You Serious?
Are You Serious?
A group of die hard Heath Ledger fans are demanding that the Joker be retired from all movies permanently.  How about that?

CNN reported about the website, The Ultimate Joker, that has started a petition to prevent the Joker from ever appearing in another movie.
"We think Heath deserves this honor," the site's team leader, Fer Barbella told CNN over the phone from Buenos Aires. "He is the ultimate Joker.  We are Batman fans from the comics and from the movies.  After we saw 'The Dark Knight' we thought this Joker was really the best. It deserves to be withdrawn from any Batman sequels."
They also compare it to the retiring of Michael Jordan's #23 jersey after he retired from the Chicago Bulls.  When they have 50,000 names, they plan on approaching Warner Bros. (they currently have 4461 supporters).

We already discussed here whether or not someone else could fill the Joker's shoes.  Yes, Ledger was great.  I think the idea of the Joker never appearing in another movie is over the top.  I just don't see it happening.  If Warner Bros. can find the right person and make money, there's no way they wouldn't use the Joker.  50,000 is a lot of people but how many people saw the movie?  How many would see another movie eventually with the Joker?  It's tragic what happened but as they say, the show must go on.

And why stop at movies?  What about cartoons and video games.  Maybe we shouldn't see him in comics either because it'd be a reminder.

He was a good actor, but to ban the Joker from ever appearing in another batman movie is crazy! I mean eventually they will reboot the series in 10 or so years after this one ends and are they just going to leave the Joker out of it?

These people have stated on their website, and I quote, "Heath Ledger is the best Joker ever". Yes, it is an opinion, but the best Joker ever? First of all, we're forgetting Mark Hamill, which in my opinion is overall a better Joker. Anyway, they want no one else to have a shot at the roll... EVER? How do we now he is the BEST EVER, if no one else gets a shot? what a bunch of crybabies. Yeah, it was sad that he died, but don't try and get all high and mighty on WB because your sad, pathetic hearts were broken by some man whom you've never met. I'm willing to guess, a pretty good guess I might add, that not a single person who actually knew Ledger signed that stupid petition. That website makes me sick.... point blank

It's sad that there are people who really feel like that. I'm sure there are some on that site.

Ledger has fans? I wonder if his performance wouldn't have been so blown out of proportion if he had actually lived to see the movie play out? It seems like people always blow someone's worth in their profession out of proportion when they are no longer alive (ahem Tupac & Biggie ahem).I saw the Dark Knight and honestly it wasn't that good.People act as if Ledger played Joker better than any part has ever been played ever. His performance wasn't that good and THAT movie wasn't THAT good as a whole. It is arguably the best Superhero movie of all time...but compared to the competition...that's not saying alot.To retire the Joker with Ledger would be absolutely ridiculous.

I think that the Joker shouldn't appear in the Nolan franchise again because of the lack of Ledger, that being said claiming for Joker of all the villains to retire of any future movie is ridiculous, there will be future franchises and there will be new Batmans, why not a new Joker?

I do not have a problem with the Joker coming back in any Batman franchise. Even in Nolan's series. They replaced Katie Holmes. Why not the Joker? I thought Ledger did a wonderful job and I would have loved it if he was alive to reprise the role but he is not. The Joker is a wonderful villain and should not be missed out on simply because an actor died. They didn't refuse to make anymore Superman movies when Christopher Reeve died or even when he broke his neck. Someone out there could do just as good a job doing the Joker as Ledger. In fact, I am convinced someone out there could do a better job.

Wow. That was daring. I always felt like he was not the greatest either. Especially when you watch his non-Superman movies. They are just so-so. I usually do not say it though because all the Reeve fans will swarm lol.

I do not think Nolan has any intentions to do it. But I do not think it should be because of Ledger. If he does not use Joker, that is fine. But I hope he wont because he wants to do other things, not because of Ledger's death.

This is just stupid. Yes Heath did a great job, yes it was super unexpected and it is tragic that he died......but he is NOT the joker. It was a part he played. If Christian Bale died would we cry no more Batman. Chris Reeves is dead......but yet Superman goes on. Gene Wilder IS the best Willy Wonka ever yet we let Johnny Deep have a shot.

So they are telling me that if Johnny "Creepy ass" Deep wanted to play the Joker....they wouldn't be for that? Heath has had two good roles in his whole career, I don't see them saying no one else should play a gay cowboy.

I don't think Joker should be retired from movies forever, but for the rest of this movie series with this cast, I think it would be best.  I really doubt Ledger's performance could be topped.

Also did they even read comics before that movie came out, i bet the answer is no. They are just macking up stupid crap.

please, Ledger doesn't own the Joker, no matter how good he was. Comparing it to Jordan's number retiring makes this even more of a joke. Retiring numbers is a part of all sports.

They cast The Crow several more times after Lee died. Granted, it's not as big a movie or character, but just because your bleeding hearts cry over his death, you're going to try and ruin it for the rest of everyone else? Forget it, it'll never happen.

It does seem a little extreme. But, if they ever find a new Joker for any more Batman sequels, than he'll definitely have some major shoes to fill. I don't know what to say about this really. Hmmm

I'm sorry.....Wait, no I'm not, lol.... but that's just idiotic.  Sure, the guy did a great job as the Joker; but as G~Man said, "the show must go on."  Seriously, those fans are getting a little too die-hard in my opinion.   If they want to make little shrines in their homes and pray to their little HL statues, then let 'em.  More power to 'em.  But come on.... doing something that would effect the rest of us is just.... dumb.

(DISCLAIMER:  I apologize if I have offended anyone who actually has a shrine of Ledger and/or who prays to a Heath Ledger statue.)

Is true he was a incredibly Joker an incredible actor and I actually don't see many people that can top his performance.

But that's asking for too much, I think. I mean, the Joker is the main bad guy of Batsy! If they reboot the movies ten years later Joker must, hell! He is obligated by Batman fan contract, he is OBLIGE! to freaking return!!!!!!!!

Besides is not the same as a number in Basketball, We got infinite numbers, but only one bad guy that can make Batsy laugh in middle of a crisis XD :P (The killing joke)

By the way do they really want Heath to be remember just by the Joker? He had other roles! I know Joker was one of his biggest, but, Do they really want to remember him as a anarchist psychopath with make up? He had other plays!

I doubt his fans want to retire Ennis Del Mar just because he played it.

RIP

I don't see how these people can refer to themselves as fans of the Joker. If you're a fan of any character, you want to see them continue to prosper for the future. Had Heath Ledger lived, I doubt he would've wanted to continue playing the Joker over and over and over again and I doubt he would've wanted the character to retire when he retired because if you look back at some of his interviews, he had respect for other actors who played the role and an understanding of why the villain is so vital to the Batman universe. When the Joker was created, he was spared consistently from death because he was a great character not because he would be played by a good actor.

These "fans" need to understand that the Joker is a fictional character who endured the test of time, he will never be defined by an actor because he is essentially too versatile. Cesar Romero had his own spin on the Joker. Jack Nicholson had his own spin on the Joker. Mark Hamill had his own spin on the Joker. Heath Ledger had his own spin on the Joker and someday, someone else will have their own spin on the Joker. The Joker legacy will live on because it's always been larger than life.

No way are they going to get 50,00 petitioners. And even if they did, no way would Warner Bros agree. Or DC for that matter. The Joker is a big part of the Batman world, to remove him from the films would probably spark an uproar in DC fans, of which there are definatly more than 50,000. Such a mistake could be very costly to their company, and it's well known how board members feel about a potential loss in consumers.

On another note, anyone notice that Eartha Kitt died at Christmas? Now she made quite a good Catwoman, yet, hark! Where are the cries for Catwoman to be stripped from our cinema screens? No where, because let's face it, this isn't about a character. This is about Heath Ledger. If he were still alive and they wanted to recast the Joker for whatever reason, there would be upcries yes, but that wouldn't stop the studios. And we'd all have to live with it, whether we like it or not. Personally, I look forward to seeing the next Joker. Yes he has some big shoes to fill, but let's face it.

Judging him will be half the fun.

Oh, and not to  be too judgemental on my own sex but, how many of those petitioners do you reckon were female?

WOW!!!

i have to say i agree in the sense that they should wait a few years before returning the character but retiring the character from the big screen for good is unethical.true know ones played the joker like ledger but that's just being selfish .oh and it wouldn't be like taking away superman if reeves died because unlike this bad idea taking away the last superman movie would have save 2 and a half hour of my life.

I thought Heath Ledger's portrayal of the joker was the best acting I have ever seen in any comic book movie. Hands down, he was the most amazing, extraordinary, and committed person to ever play a part like this. I know who ever would play joker in the next film (if they included joker again) would have to perform to the most ridiculous of expectations. That being said, it doesn't mean you can just retire the character. Who ever would play Joker should know the expectations of the audience, and if they are willing to try anyways, we should give them the chance.

I wasn't a fan of the first Dark Knight.  I thought it was long though.....

Anywho, these people will never have their petition granted.  If it were easy as starting a petition, I would've made one saying "Save superheroines  by keeping Halle Berry, Jessica Alba, and Jennifer Garner away from them!"...........I'd get at least 3,000.  But anywho, "Brokeback Mountain"...I have spoken.

It's not just incredibly stupid, but it's insulting. Thank goodness Warner Brothers holds online petitions with the same low reguard as an amature's mailed-in scripts.

Ledger wasn't even that good anyway. Perhaps if Mark Hamil had died & sparked this idiocracy, I wouldn't be floating between ammused & pissed right now.

Ooh, perhaps while they're at it, they can get the Crow banned in honor of Brandon Lee, Superman banned in honor of George Reeves, & so on.

Exactly.  Brandon Lee was great (in my opinion).  It sucked what happened.  They didn't waste too much time before making another movie (or 2?) and the tv show.  I never watched the others.  I was a fan of Brandon Lee (Rapid Fire was so bad but fun to watch) and I just didn't care to see the other versions.  I never thought they should retire the character since it was a great comic (it's just too bad the movies weren't as great as the comic).

Who ever would play Joker should know the expectations of the audience, and if they are willing to try anyways, we should give them the chance."

I thought Heath was scary good in the role. But retire the Joker? That just seems silly to me.

"I thought Heath Ledger's portrayal of the joker was the best acting I have ever seen in any comic book movie. Hands down.
Seeing as how the acting in comic movies overall has been terrible since the beginning....this doesn't really say alot about Heath's performance.

"I do not have a problem with the Joker coming back in any Batman franchise. In fact, I am convinced someone out there could do a better job."
If DC decided not to make any more Superman movies because of Reeves I would have been pissed.Reeve's is a horrible actor."

Horrible actor??? He made me and millions of others believe years ago before all this CGI came out that a man can fly and Superman can be brought to the big screen and be done well enough that everyone loved it and thought it was awsome! .

Wow. That was daring. I always felt like he was not the greatest either. Especially when you watch his non-Superman movies. They are just so-so. I usually do not say it though because all the Reeve fans will swarm lol."
LOL that they will... sad too cause he was kinda average, but then Supes is kinda average. The films were not bad for their time, nothing special, but being the first of the Superman films there was not a great deal they could go on.

Agreed, that is where the trouble will come in, we will all want someone to do as good a job if not better than what Heath did

No.

The Joker is not owned by Ledger fans. Yeah Ledger played a great Joker but it's the Joker. No one can truely uptain the insanity that he truely is.
