JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED Launches in April

JUSTICE LEAGUE CANADA gets a new name, but it's still the same book.

Mike McKone variant cover

Writer Jeff Lemire announced on his blog today that his new book, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED will be hitting store shelves this April. Lemire, along with artist Mike McKone, were originally slated to turn JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA into JUSTICE LEAGUE CANADA, but after some talk with DC, they all agreed that just changing the title to "Canada" may be a little limiting, so they're starting a whole new series instead This still means that JLA will be ending in April.

As a result, JLA will be ending in April and my book will become a brand new ongoing series called JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED! Justice League United will launch in April with an extra-sized Zero Issue followed by #1 in May. And the first storyline will be titled: Justice League Canada. The team will still be based in Canada and the book will still introduce a brand new First Nations Canadian superhero to the DC Universe. More details on this new character, her origin and her powers, will be released in the weeks to come.

The team will have their headquarters in Moosonee, Ontario and will be made up of these members: Animal Man, Green Arrow, Stargirl, Martian Manhunter, Alanna Strange, and Hawkman.

So make sure, this April, to check out the newest DC on-going series, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNITED!

What do you guys think about this new series and the name change?

@braynehurricane: loool by saying 'not to be that guy' you made yourself that guy, I fully didn't even notice until you mentioned it, I was busy being excited for this book to land, that being said, a dash of flavor in the team wouldnt hurt, I'm sure this is just the core members or even more to come!

I just noticed Stargirl's outfit is a little different.

I hope they do some space adventures, considering they have Strange, a Kryptonian and a Martian on the team.

Newsarama's interview with Lemire says it's a heavily space-based series. The first arc's on Rann and the second's on Thanagar.

SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!

Sold as well

Adam Strange Finally!

But do you see Animal Man's hair though. I'm buying it just for that.

Too bad Lemire doesn't write black characters

Posted by Fantasgasmic

I don't understand the appeal of Adam Strange. Also, why is it tagged Alanna Strange?

Edited by dannymalt

As a Canadian, I'm disappointed, I really wanted this to be called Justice League Canada. Oh well, still going to read it.

Posted by dondave

@fantasgasmic: Alanna Strange will also be a member of the team

Animal Man in a team book? Please don't mess his character up...

Posted by MarcosVergara14

@jwalser3: Well Jeff Lemire was the one writing his monthly series, i think he knows how it´s supposed be

I am really tempted to add this book for more Lemire Animal Man and Green Arrow, but I'm generally not a fan of team books. Maybe I'll pick up the trades.

I like the roster, but I'm not crazy about Adam Strange's costume. Also, I kinda wish DC used the new52 versions to change some of the genderswap characters into the principles for various heroic mantles. Alana Strange was great in Ame-Comi Girls and it wouldn't have hurt anything to give her the lead as the principle "adam strange" type hero.

Same with Natasha Irons vs Steel. I prefer Natasha/Hardware way more than Technique/Steel. Really, I would've done that with a lot of characters. Hmm, I feel a blog post coming on.

EDIT: Holy hilarious Batman I apparently needed to rtfa:

That sure doesn't look like an "Alanna", but hey, I'm happy!

@fodigg: Alanna AND Adam Strange will be appearing in JLU. Lemire said in an interview that Alanna will be more of the swashbuckling one whereas Adam will be the quieter, nerdier member of the team. Kind of like Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne esque relationship. Does that still satisfy your wishes?

Yes, although I'm hoping it's not too much like Pym/Van Dyne for obvious reasons. I guess I just wish they went that extra step to make it all Alanna.

How come? Adam Strange has been a lynchpin in DC's non Green Lantern cosmic universe for some time now. He outranks more popular recent characters like Wally West and Stephanie Brown in appearance and Alanna has always been a supporting cast member of Adam's series. Again I'm just curious as to why you'd prefer just Alanna instead of both of them.

Oh I'm a big fan of Adam Strange and supported his solo book while that was going on. He was great in his 52 arc too. However:

I wrote a bit more on my thoughts regarding this here:

@mikestark: I'm really not a hater of Canada nor the USA but I think JLU fits better if its going to be a cosmic title.

So DC is cancelling JLA and Teen Titans. There's a rumor that TOS: Pandora and Larfleeze are also getting cancelled, apparently. I don't see the Constantine solo series lasting too much longer. I was just told at the comics store that they only ordered ten copies of the latest issue because they didn't expect it to sell more than that. And I really don't see where Red Hood and the Outlaws could go once Tynion leaves. Regardless of whether my speculations with JLA, TT, Stormwatch, Animal Man, and whatever else being cancelled, coupled with their all ready low number of series it doesn't really matter how many new series they introduce, the New 52 is going to be reduced to like ten series.

Anyway, I'll definitely pick this up because I've been liking Lemire's stuff and because it's the League. But I have to say that is a strange mix of characters.

I'm definitely behind this. Thanks for the info.

im glad no on forgot animal man and that supergirl is known outside a superman/kryptonian title

Posted by Vaeternus

Nice, I like how Animal-Man is in it. Will read because I love JL's in general and Jeff's work is good. I take it Supergirl will help them out since she's not officially part of the team, sad face but all good.

HURRAY

This will be sooo epic!! I freaking love Adam Strange and this line up is great.

Just take my money DC seriously

I didn't like JLA that much anyways

Posted by mikep12

Maybe will get a stargirl and supergirl relation like the JL unlimited tas

Posted by CrazyScarecrow

This looks like an amazing line up!!!! We have the Martian Manhunter ('nuff said), Stargirl (I have been loving her in JLA), Green Arrow, Animal Man, and Adam and Alanna Strange plus Hawkman will be coming back later on in the series. I am really excited to Martian Manhunter, Stargirl, and Green Arrow to stay and I have always been interested in Adam Strange though I just haven't been able to find any comics with him starring. Adam Strange looked like a character I would really enjoy reading. Also happy to hear that they will be doing stuff with Alanna. From what I read about Adam through multiple wikias and a DC encyclopedia she seemed like just another love interest. I am really excited for this Justice League title!

That red patch in Supergirl's no no area looks weird.

Edited by Fallen_Crippled

Definitely buying this. The roster is amazing. Maybe add in another character, like Black Lightning. I don't know. Still looks like it will be awesome!

@lykopis: Wait isn't it said that the writer himself is Canadian

True, true - but considering he's from Essex County (most southern part of Ontario), him getting some hands on knowledge about First Nations people would be difficult, especially since most Canadians (unfortunately) have little knowledge of our indigenous population or in interacting with them outside of their reservations. The majority of our First Nations are in other provinces and most usually in the most northern areas of said provinces. This excludes our Inuit groups as they are their own culture and traditionally what many around the world consider "Eskimos".

If anything, had he (Lemire) taken this to Nunavut, it would have spoken more to me as a Canadian since having a territory specifically identified as belonging to one of our native peoples in a widely known and distributed comic book would have been awesome. There's not a lot riding on how Mr. Lemire intends to present this character outside of the excitement of a new Canadian hero in the DC Universe, but little things like I mentioned above would be appreciated by people like me. :)

As long as Buddy Baker's around, I'm not complaining. Also Lemire's handling this. Bring it on.
