JUSTICE LEAGUE #12: Superman and Wonder Woman Hook Up

DC brings new meaning to the term "power couple."

Superman is not married to Lois Lane in the New 52. A pairing often speculated on is Superman and Wonder Woman. This was a question I raised back in June 2011. Now it appears we may indeed find out how that will play out.

Entertainment Weekly's Top Shelf had the exclusive cover reveal for JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 showing the new man in Wonder Woman's life.

No Caption Provided

Let the speculation begin. Previously the solicit did mention this:

A shocking last page that will have the world talking about this issue!

Apparently this isn't just a "one-issue stunt." Geoff Johns told EW:

This is the new status quo.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 goes on sale August 29 so we'll have to wait and see.

THE f*CK? It was supposed to be Batman/ Diana not this! Anyone who watched JL TAS will know this! I was always hoping I would see the day when they'd finally hook up but I guess I'll see what Mr. Johns will do. Doesn't make much sense since there was no build up

Imagine if Wonder Woman was replaced by Catwoman instead, it would make no sense right? The two would have no chemistry and no publication history to support that development. The problem with this development is the same, that it runs completely against everything that Wonder Woman is about and what her publication history has developed for her. This is also complete fan service to Superman fans who want him to be romantically involved with all the leading ladies of DC.

Agreed. A romantic relationship between the two seems illogical. I greatly preferred the almost sibling relationship Clark and Diana had before the reboot. It was deeper than a friendship but did not enter the realms of romance. Now that's out the window it would seem.

I give it six issues at most.

Also, the amount of people cheering that Superman is finally 'getting some' in this thread is a bit disconcerting. I mean really people? In the story of Superman is that really what's important?

Trust Geoff Johns to go for the cheap points that also undermines how they've been saying the New52 isn't a temporary thing...superstar writer my ass.

@RazzaTazz: True. And if I may, about your considering dropping Wonder Woman, that title isn't going to be affected by Justice League 12. Both Action Comics and Superman have their own plans for the next few months as does Wonder Woman. None of them will reference the Superman/Wonder Woman pairing. The only place where the romance can continue is Justice League and I imagine it'll run for a while then pass as you said. The fact the relationship Superman and Wonder Woman are in can't be showcased in their own titles will lead its downfall I imagine.

And up in the sky the Super macking began

And to the presses Geoff and Lee ran

To alert the world

so all the Clark and Lois fanboys and that one fangirl

could let out a collective hurl

While those who had long awaited the lay

began to pray that it would be like this the very next day

and to I who am impartial

who sits at home a judging martial

can only pause and say

congrats Superman on the wonderous lay

In my opinion, Batman & Wonder-Woman is just as bad.

It feels forced and it just does not work with the characters, especially Batman who already has way better love interests who actually mean something for his character development.

Selina is both a criminal and a crime-fighter. She mirrors him in many interesting ways.

Talia has the whole family dynamic going for her and family is definitely important to the Batman mythos.

St-Cloud/Madison/Vale represent the normal life Bruce could have.

Wonder-Woman means none of those things. She is just the female in the Trinity.

I think really based on Diana's history and well developed character, it should not be Superman and any other hero. It should be Diana and a firefighter from the Bronx, or a doctor from Medicins Sans Frontieres working in the Congo. She wouldn't be impressed by some guy wearing a cape, she would be more impressed by someone truly selfless. So Diana and Clark coming together has all the applicability of something like a one-night stand, which neither of them are really for either given their background and beliefs.

But then, it is interesting that Diana can't be the most powerful one in the relationship I guess.

And it's only a matter of time before others like you see the truth behind the gloss and shine of the DCnU and see what we true DC fans have seen.

I mean, come on DC! You know you are doing something wrong here! The characters are nothing alike and Superman is still madly in love with Lois!

This just reminds me of Frank Miller's All Star Batman and DK2. You know, the crappy ones.

Since when? Pre-New 52? He hasn't seemed that in love with her since the current Superman or Action run.

Did you forget Superman #1? He seemed pretty upset about the way Lois Lane was talking about him to her boyfriend.

Also, in Action #12, his fantasy, a "For the Man Who Has Everything" moment, which he literally called "a dream come true" was that he would marry Lois.

Uhm he likes Lois. i know if I liked a girl and I found out she was dating someone, I would be pretty upset. And if I liked a person, I know they would be my dream person in that moment. He can fall for someone else -- life goes on.

I am not saying he cannot move on. I am just telling you that there HAS been scenes in those books pointing out that Superman is still in love with Lois. You just apparently forgot about them.

@WanderingHands: DId you not read what Geoff Johns said in the article? I feel like that part is important. He said their "RELATIONSHIP" (not just hook up) would give a new status quo for the DCU. It is apparently going to affect the entire universe.

I did and still I do not believe it for one second. DC might make it last a few issues, because we are not in the 80's anymore and every plot point has to go for an entire arc at least but just like they went back on it in 600 or like Joe Kelly had to make his Wonder-Woman-Batman relationship end before it even started, there is no way they are committing to this.

Why not? DC committed to a relaunch where almost everything was changed. Why wouldn't they continue making these kind of changes?

Because editorially speaking it just cannot work. In comics, protagonists can only date characters from their own books.

Wonder-Woman is not going to be a perpetual guest-star in Superman or Action Comics and Superman is definitely not going to be in Azzarello's Wonder Woman.

Also, the Superman-Lois Lane romance is just too iconic to not be used by the writers.

Plus Justice League can't squarely focus on the Superman/Wonder Woman romance. You have to give the rest of the team panel time as well.

There have been scenes in the book that he "likes" her. He never said anything about love. No one said anything about love and he doesn't seem like he is obsessed with her.
Too iconic? I thought thats why DC relaunched all of their books. SO there wouldn't be a word such as "iconic". Calling something iconic stops it from growing. Thats why Superman hasn't grown in years.
Relationships NEVER work when characters only date characters from their own book. A relationship should be a small thread in a larger story. Relationships should never control the whole book. Example of two great relationships were Wally and Linda and Kyle and Jade. Linda was by no means in every issue of the book, but she showed up from time to time. Though she DID show up a lot in the silver age, but times have changed -- issues aren't one and done anymore. Her more recent appearances only had her showing up as a guest every third issue or so.
Kyle and Jade had a moment every two issues or so too.
Giving partners space in comics is a good thing. It doesn't get annoying when love takes over the entire book.

I honestly do not know who would make a good Wonder-Woman love interest.

You create someone too mundane and you might end up with the now Terry Long (Donna's husband). Wolfman and Perez's The New Teen Titans is basically my favourite comic book but Terry Long is basically my most hated character of all time.

@RazzaTazz: Honestly, damsels in distresses bore me stupid, too, these days. I just want a love interest where the most predictable angle isn't putting them in some sort of danger just so the protagonist could come and save them.

As for the woman being more powerful than the man in superhero relationships, one of my favorite couples in all of comicdom was the Nightwing and Starfire one, so for me it's not who's more physically powerful, it's that they're fully capable of taking care of themselves so they won't be used for cliched plotlines. Unfortunately, though, equality in superhero romances are a rarity it seems.

There really wasn't any build up at all. This all came out of the blue. On some "Hai guise" shit. I'll wait until I read the issue to fully judge but having no build up between the two seems like a missed opportunity. I mean, these two barely interacted with each other in eleven issues.

@DarthShap: What was exceptional about Terry Long though? Someone like who I said would be quite amazing, someone who can die because of the threat that they face but choose to do so anyway to save others. That is someone that Diana might be interested in, not Superman.

@RazzaTazz: I see where you're coming from with Babs and Helena, but to me, those kind of relationships almost seemed kind of incestuous when characters date so close within the family like that. Power Girl woulda been cool for Nightwing I think, though. Unfortunately, I cant think of any non-to-low powered crimefighters that aren't already somehow linked to the Bat-Family or just inappropriately aged (Black Canary).

They made her strong and independent. That's not quite the same thing. Honestly, I've read, let's say the majority of Superman comics in the past ten years, and I have no idea where this 'Lois is a bitch' angle is coming from. She could be snarky, sometimes competitive, and willing to push the limits to get what she wants, but she never stopped being a loving, supportive wife (And a great mother too).

Eh, IDK, IMHO, they just went too far with it to the point that it made Supes come off as the submissive one and that's a relationship I'm about as interested in reading as Supes saving her all the time. Hell, say what you will about the Spike and Dru relationship over in Buffy, but while abusive, yes, at least they were mutually and equally abusive to one another.

I love it . People are so mad,and so futile to stop it. It's the Oh Lawd Comics are Ruined Forever Comments are hilarious.

I bet Geoff Johns does stuff like this so he can read comment threads and laugh at all the haters, while sitting in his tub of money.

The DCnu 52 is outselling Marvel in units, which mean it's going to stay around for years because it is a roaring success.

Be Mad Suckas, Superman and Wonder Woman are hooking up( it won't be the first or last just ask Mark Waid, they had a child together!).

Batman will be fine Catwoman, Ivy, Tailia, Silver St. Cloud will keep him company.

Lol, why are so many people so upset by this? It was high time for the Lois/Superman relationship to take a break and Superman and Wonder Woman have some great chemistry together. Haters will bring up DKR2, but there was a little story called Kingdom Come where their relationship was done well and helped drive the plot. There was also Action Comics #761 where they get trapped in Asgard together for a couple centuries and the sexual tension was palpable. It was the closest Superman ever got to cheating on Lois Post-Crisis. I welcome their new relationship. Good for you, Kal and Diana!

@Cooke76: I have debated it believe me and I still stick by my original belief. The time they did date in Action Comics 600, it ended because what was felt beforehand between the two was a brief passion that didn't come to anything. As it should be. That paved the way for the excellent friendship between Superman and Wonder Woman. For the most part. I've enjoyed the New 52 but this looks set to damper my feelings about it.
