Joss Whedon's 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV Show Characters Revealed

Will these characters be enough to carry the new show?

When it was revealed that Joss Whedon would be involved with a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, we couldn't be happier. After the success of The Avengers, a show with the creative control of Whedon would be great. What surprised me was seeing comments suggesting or hoping that perhaps Sam Jackson would be headed to the small screen to continue his role as Nick Fury. That can't happen.

We can't expect to see the actors from the movie taking time out of their busy schedules to reprise their movie roles. Many of the Avengers actors are currently working on the sequels involving their characters or they're trying to fit in filming other projects so they don't get typecast as a comic book character.

No Caption Provided

Who will we be seeing? It appears we'll have a bunch of new agents that will be taking the spotlight in the television show. TV Line managed to get a character sheet with descriptions on the characters.

SKYE | This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

AGENT GRANT WARD | Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.

AGENT ALTHEA RICE | Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS | These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

These aren't characters or agents from the comics. In order to keep the costs of the show down, it makes sense that we won't be seeing the big names from the Cinematic Universe.

This doesn't necessarily rule out other characters from popping in. Perhaps if ABC could negotiate it properly, maybe Sam Jackson could be persuaded to pop in. Maybe Cobie Smulders could appear occasionally as Maria Hill as she's no stranger to television.

Getting other 'big names' would depend on the success of the show. When it's ratings sweeps time, the networks usually try to bring out the big guns. We'd have to see what the show is capable of and what direction it takes.

This sounds awesome. New characters means that there is no chance for the comic book fans to get mad at bad interpretations of their comic book characters, and at the same time be true to the comics.

It would be nice to se Cobie Smulders make a cameo appearance here and there, but I want to see (troughout the series) the introduction/cameo of Agents Danvers, Drew and maybe even Agent Phillip Lawson.

Remember that stupid, boring character we had never heard of and didn't care about that they stuck in all the Marvel movies. what was his name? Coulson, right? Oh, wait, he was one of the best damn things about the movies!

Just give it a chance.

Season 2 of Dollhouse was incredible and some of Joss' best work. The first half of season 1 was eh (I blame the studio, Joss had originally wanted a much different show and they made him change a lot of what he wanted to do with the show), but the second half, was great with episodes like Man on the Street, Spy in the House of Love, Needs, and Briar Rose. And Epitaph One was one of my favorite episodes of TV.

Its funny but I'm kind of conflicted about this revelation of who the SHIELD show's characters will be. Part of me is bummed since I really do want Fury and Hill to be part of the show as well as other big names, but part of me also realizes that the show simply would just be FAR too expensive to maintain if the show had these characters ongoing from the beginning. The best compromise is no doubt cameo appearances in my opinion. Have Jackson come in for maybe a show or two out of the season for some big event/arc. Have Smulders come in for maybe a few more shows out of the season in her role as Hill and maybe have even Gregg come in as Coulson in flashbacks. These characters are great even if for some reason they have a ring of "GI Joe" to me...but considering the irony behind the creation of GI Joe: A Real American Hero, I believe it to be appropriate. Oh and if you think its hard to bring in Smulders for the show, its really not. SHIELD HQ is in Manhattan right? And if I'm not mistaken...so is the location of How I Met Your Mother. So I can easily see Robin Scherbatsky doing her role by day hanging with her friends and being a news anchor while at night reporting to headquarters for her actual position as SHIELD's Deputy Director. Let's go to the mall, everybody!

why should I give a crap about any of these characters? If they had Agent Brand from S.W.O.R.D. in there somehow, i would definitely be interested, because she is a god-damn bad ass. I shall try to give it a chance but since my expectations are so low it could turn out to be a nice surprise....if I'm not harshly judging every second that i watch it

Now I have no problem with new characters if they are written well. However I would like them to use bad guys from the comics. Hell I would also like to see some of the heros from the comics. Maybe not the main Avengers cause of the star's shooting schedules but maybe those we have not seen on the screen yet.

Maybe throw the guys in it:

Good Guys: Machine Man, Wonder Man, Grim Reaper, MoonStone, Nomad, Darkhawk.

Another trademark of Joss' discovered! A fondness for hippy-ish names for his female characters! River, Echo, Willow, and now Skye!

I love Joss, I'm a major Buffy fan for over decade now, I loved Angel, Firefly, and I saw every episode of Dollhouse and enjoyed it as well. But here's the thing, I can't stand it in the spy genre when they have one or two people handling all the scientific operations. Particularly when they never shut up a la Marshall in Alias or Topher in Dollhouse or that extremely unnecessary guy in Mission Impossible 3. They just get annoying as characters and are extremely kitschy. I liked Bennett in Dollhouse but then when Topher got a hold of her she just became the loveable nerd whereas before she was an AWESOME villain.

I think people should be reminded that the character of Phil Coulson was created just for the movieverse, and yet has become a fan favorite. I think he should be an example too everyone who "don't care anymore" simply because the characters aren't characters from the comics. If anything, Coulson's character proves that you don't have to be a known comic book character to become a fan favorite in a comic book based show.

So personally I'm looking forward to this show; exploring deeper into Marvel's cinematic universe through the eyes of these new characters.

@sethysquare: I am really not sure how you can make your mind up in this fashion in any way at this stage... we know next to nothing about the show at this point and already you are telling me what you would rather watch. Are not even willing to wait until at least the pilot before condemning it to the bottom of the pile?

Personally, the notion of a small team task force focused on fighting and solving the unbound possibilities of the MU with Whedon on script duties and a healthy budget (because Marvel is now a wealthy producer) definitely interests me, whether I know the characters or not yet.

I didn't know a single one of the characters of Firefly before I watched the thing. By the end of episode one I cared about them.

@antemiusenteri: Sigh... Yeah, I know. People leap on stuff with such destructive cynicism so early these days. No doubt this series will be mauled before it is even out of the gate by members of the various opinion camps, no matter how good it has the potential to be if allowed to breathe and grow. Ah well, such is the internet ;)

C'mon folks.

Joss Whedon has been known to use FAKE 'casting sides' in auditioning talent.

So, I'll bet on these names NOT being the final one's for the series' characters. Releasing the sides like this will give Joss, his co-producers and the casting director the chance to mine the field for the best group of actors and actresses.

Instead of trying to cast for 'Carol Danvers/Cpt. Marvel' and 'Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird', they'll be looking for 'Agent Althea Rice' and 'Skye'. Look at the descriptions of the characters and ignore the names. Couldn't 'Agent Grant Ward's description easily be flipped for Clay Quartermain's?

Marvel and Joss Whedon would be idiots to not use any of the known S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from the comics. It makes good sense for these characters to be established on TV, before they cameo or have a featured role in any of the later films. It just seems to fit Marvel Studio's TV/film strategy.

@sora_thekey: So true. If we had characters from the comics we'd have people arguing "This isn't [insert name here]!"(Nice name, Kingdom Hearts is great). Plus look at what happened with Phil, completely new character. Completely awesome. Plus, this Joss Wheadon we're talking about he's written some pretty amazing stuff(Buffy Seasons 1-3, and five(haven't seen seven yet although that will soon change as I once again will have amazon prime, and really disliked the fourth and Sixth Seasons) Avengers is my favorite superhero movie(Although I really enjoyed Kick Ass), Thor, and from what I've seen of Firefly that was pretty good too. Plus they never said this was going to be a superhero show, it's going to be spy show with superhero elements.

Talk about bandwagon jumping leeches. LOL I swear it's like "follow the leader" with some of the drones here.

One person says something & the rest latch onto their words & follow along like a little puppy sitting at his masters feet. It's kinda pathetic that some people can't formulate their own opinions.

Back on-topic I'll be watching this show regardless of what anyone says. I love Marvel & S.H.I.E.L.D. so I'll obviously watch. I'm not going to bash a show when I haven't even seen it. I'll wait until I see a commercial or watch the actual show to draw my own conclusion on whether or not it's worth me viewing it.

Agent Ward & Agent Rice seem like my type of characters.

I have no doubt with Whedon at the helm this will be a good show. But it would undeniably have been better if it centered around characters that were actually from the comics. Nick Fury would have been great, but understandably absent considering what Sam Jackson would likely charge, but Why is Maria Hill not on that list, or Wyatt Wingfoot, Victoria Hand, Sharon Carter or especially Quake from Secret Warriors? At least figure out a way to bring in Clark Greg as Agent Coulson, not like he's up to anything. Yet again, I'm not saying this show will suck, because it will probably be really good, but I don't see anything about this project that says Marvel to me at all. I'm certainly less than impressed with the roster.

This. The show most likely will be good, but it would have been much better to use any of the numerous SHIELD agents in the comics universe that are not part of the cinematic universe. No big deal for the casual TV fan, but for the comic fans, we have to wait to watch the show before we start to care about the characters, when we could already be imagining plot lines for characters we are familiar with. Would have been cool if at least one of them had some sort of power too. I'm hoping this is not just another cop show with SHIELD uniforms, but I'll hope for the best.

Shield already has a rich cast ofcharacters I mean I could see the main protagonist being new to the universe but why woldn't she be? She's the Protagnoist she is supposed to lead us into that world... I don't understand the motivation to make this a Wheadon original project I mean we really should have atleast one marvel hero in the cast list theres no good reason not to use one of the lesser known heroes and make them shield Agents there just isn't and plus you know this pilot is gonna have Avengers references mercilessly shoehorned in for no good reason other than to remind you this is shield dont get me wrong the man is a genious but hes working with un-original material and trying to make it his and I dont like that I'm sorry I love buffy, I love angel I adore Firefly and Doctor Horrible but Wheadon dont go so damned far with this

I think bringing Cobie Smulders back as Maria Hill every once in a while to deliver orders in Fury's place, since she does so in the comics at times, is a good idea, and it can help give a visual connection to the movie to have one of the actors from there. And, of course, as they mentioned, she has been on daytime tv... as Robin, I think, on How I Met Your Mother. I don't know what people were thinking with the Samuel L. Jackson being on a daytime tv show... If what I've heard is true, he's the highest paid actor there is right now... why would he go to daytime tv at this point?
