Jessica Jones TV Series Will Take Place in Marvel Universe

The television show will be rooted in the 'cinematic' Marvel Universe.

No Caption Provided

We first heard about plans for AKA Jessica Jones, a television series starring the former hero known as Jewel, Jessica Jones. It was a year ago that I actually raised the question of what the show would be like. Would we see superheroes and superpowers in the show? Now we're finally getting some answers.

Hit Fix has reported that, according to Melissa Rosenberg, the show will indeed "take place in the larger 'cinematic' Marvel Universe." This means the show will exist in the same universe as the the Iron Man, Thor and Avengers movies. We've already heard that Luke Cage will play a role as well as Carol (Ms. Marvel) Danvers.

It's very tricky navigation there. You can't mention one guy because Fox has the rights to that guy and Universal has the rights to the other one. There are a lot of boundaries on who you can and can't use.

The plan was to have Cage and Danvers from the beginning. Lesser known characters would be brought in later or known characters would be renamed. The show can reference Tony Stark or the Avengers but obviously they won't be making appearances any time soon.

The question was also brought up whether or not the fate of the Wonder Woman pilot would affect ABC's decision to greenlight the AKA Jessica Jones but Rosenberg feels confident. The show will be darker and grittier. In other words, nothing like the Wonder Woman show. It'll be interesting to see how much they can get away with as the show clearly can't be a direct adaptation to the ALIAS series by Brian Michael Bendis.

Thanks to Sora_thekey for the heads up.

Eh, Super Hero shows never seem to survive on network Televison....I think Smallville did due to its early years garnered a lot of the "Dawsons Creek" audiences...and grabbed others when they were real young...which led them to continue watching it into later seasons as it was familiar to them.

Look at all the "comic shows" that didn't last or never existed

The Cape
No Ordinary Family
Wonder Woman
Aquaman
Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles
Etc

Think of the possibilities: Heroes for Hire or maybe even crossovers between the other Marvel shows like Cloak and Dagger and Mockingbird.

I'd like to see it. I'd also like to see the Cloak & Dagger, Moon Knight series and the much celebrated BET Black Panther animated Marvel goes on about a lot.

* sigh * Come on Disney, it's not like you don't own a few cable/satellite channels that you can do whatever you want with and/or replace already flopped and still running shows with.

I have a bad feeling about this show. Especially after I've heard about Carol Danvers. She is much more famous than Jessica, I expect a lot of complains about the show not being about Ms. Marvel.

- If this show was on HBO I would give it a much better shot at success

- Network TV will take all the balls out this mature title until it's unrecognizable IMO.

I really don't know about this.

Might be cool, but lord I don't like Jessica Jones, and now she'll be cemented into the Marvel U forever.

Interesting... hopefully it'll be good that it can spin to future films (or at least have them be cameos in future films).

Fox gets Punisher and ABC gets Jewel (W Luke Cage and Carol Danvers). C'mon CBS, you might as well pick up a superhero since you're the only network that hasn't tried a superhero show yet.

God I'm hoping this means Iron Fist. In all honestly, this would be great. A TV series starring a woman when Electra is the only Marvel lady to get her own film and it sucked? Luke Cage in a prominent role when Black Panther went off the rails and vanished forever? Both good things. Then Ms. Marvel being involved is just icing on the cake, although I wonder if they'll use the same actress as the one in Avengers (supposedly a non-powered SHIELD agent). It doesn't hurt that I love all of those characters.

Shes a newer generally unknown character but I cant be upset.

This is pretty logical. Shes basically an objective birds eye view into superheroes.  Shes relatively normal protagonist who has seen the best and worst of the superhero world. On a professional (shes a detective iirc) and personal new superhero level.

Sort of like Phil Sheldon or a young female Jim Gordon. Lots of crossover potential and drama and exploration potential, she's a hub... She touches a lot of bases in Marvel's world, avengers, cop, supervillain crime victim.

Just mentions of the Avengers characters? Man I would watch intently if the actors made appearances every once in a while. It would get colossal ratings.

This mans that Fox would make a Luke Cage movie instead of Marvel Studios... damn

I think that the street level Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Daredevil, etc, should get their own movie where they work together to fight Kingpin or something not get a tv show on network then if (when) it fails sit in development hell because Fox won't do anything with it.

If this fails, this will go badly, very very badly.

I wonder if this will premiere around the time as FX's Powers? Bendis is lucky that two of his creations will be on the air probably within the same calendar year.

That being said, Powers definitely has a leg up in terms of content as FX is home to edgy shows like Sons of Anarchy.

I find it sort of hard to believe that it will be done well, or that it will survive long no matter what, but I'm looking forward to it. I just find it hard to see comic heroes on the small screen, I just keep thinking about the old Flash live action show.

@cattlebattle: At the end of the day it comes down to the quality of the show, and its abilities to draw in viewers, like Jessica Jones isn't a name like Wonder Woman or Aquaman, the majority of people are probably going to have no idea that this is even remotely related to a comic book character....

I wonder if she'll have powers in the show...

I loved the series, really enjoyed the take Jessica Jones had in regards to super-heroism while she ran her detective agency. The interactions she had with the Avengers and others were amazing - I hope they stick with what was in the books. I don't really watch television but would definitely watch this.

Lesser known characters than Jessica Jones? I believe those are called Extras.

well said,.....I have a feeling they will be pushing the fact that its a part of the Marvel cinematic Universe though, you know, relating it to The Avengers...then people will be disappointed It has nothing to do with the Avengers

While I like the expansion of Marvel's entertainment universe, something in my gut tells me this won't last past 2 seasons max, which is sad. I don't know that much about Jessica Jones and I think this could be a good introduction of her and other minor characters to a larger general public. I do think a Daredevil or a Heroes for Hire television show would have worked better and been an easier show to produce in terms of the production cost for showing a hero's powers on television

I heard about this while I was at work tonight, so excited. I hope they can manage to get lots of characters who might not see the light of day otherwise, or just cool little cameos. Danny Rand, Jessica Drew, Jennifer Walters....hell even a whole episode with a certain blind lawyer but no mention of Daredevil.

Oh yes!!! I didn't even think of Jessica Drew or Jennifer Walters!

An episode where she deals with blind lawyer who everybody simply calls "Mr. Murdock" or "Matt"

I agree. There's a limit to how 'dark and gritty' a network show can get. Which is why the likes of True Blood and Dexter are on cable.

I know Terminator had a good fan following, I personally never watched it. So excluding that one... the other common factor among the shows you listed is that they all SUCKED.

Look at Heroes. Season 1 burned the Mf'er down. Season 2 started strong... then the show started to SUCK, and ended up committing suicide.

Point is... if its GOOD, it will work. Bad is bad no matter what you put in it.

Though, I do agree with Smallville. It was the rabid female fanbase and overtly emotional teen-esque drama that launched that show. I personally found it boring.

I just bought and read the first Alias trade about a month ago. Definitely one of Bendis' strongest efforts. Hope this show is able to capture the grittiness of the book. I know ABC is pretty family friendly.

ABC has impressed me so far with Once Upon a Time, I have faith in this, they seem to have their head screwed on straight when approaching this series, the Wonder Woman series seemed to be headed in the wrong direction from square one.

I only got into Smallville once they started incorporating other DC characters around season 4 I think. Course these days a series is lucky if it makes it that far.
