Jeff Lemire Takes Over JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

"This is my dream gig at DC Comics, no doubt about it."

Justice League Dark #6
Justice League Dark #6

Jeff Lemire is getting to be quite a busy guy. With SWEET TOOTH and ANIMAL MAN (and SUPERBOY, pre-New 52), the writer has established his presence at DC Comics. Lemire now has another title to take on to shape under his direction.

DC's The Source announced today that after the JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK/I, VAMPIRE crossover in issues #7 and 8, Lemire will become the new writer for JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK.

This is my dream gig at DC Comics, no doubt about it. The characters in Justice League Dark are my absolute favorite in the DC Comics stable, and I can’t believe I’m actually getting a chance to write John Constantine, Zatanna and Deadman (as well as a few new team members!).

One of the first things Lemire will deal with is why the name "Justice League" is in the title. What is the connection between this team and Geoff Johns' JUSTICE LEAGUE? Constantine will emerge as the true leader of the team and two new members will be joining ("one's a man and ones a woman, one uses magic, one doesn't").

In terms of art, Mikal Janin will be staying on the title. JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #9 should be on sale the final week of May.

Update

For those wondering what happens to Peter Milligan now that he's not writing JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, DC just announced that he'll be taking over STORMWATCH with issue #9 along with continuing RED LANTERNS.

Stormwatch has the craziness, the paranoia and the occasional bursts of odd humor that really grab me. This is my kind of book. In other words, when I re-read Paul Cornell’s excellent first series with a view to taking over the writing duties I was really excited. And I’m excited too by what I have planned, from Stormwatch facing a ferocious character from the Red Lantern Corps, to hidden secrets being revealed about the origin of Stormwatch, and some shocking revelations about the mysterious Shadow Lords. It’s going to be a very intense ride.

It’s a bit of a wrench leaving JL Dark, of course, and not working with the increasingly outstanding Mikel Janin. But the fact that Jeff Lemire is taking over makes me very sanguine. I think Jeff is great. And I think he’ll be great for this book. It’ll be intriguing to see how he handles the great conman mage, John Constantine, whose twisted life I’m continuing to chronicle over in Vertigo’s Hellblazer.

I hope they will talk for a change of art too because i really don't like this. The art in this one is the new cancer of comic artist, the use of 3d poser. It is ugly, it is like a lasy guy wanted to make a bad russian porn 3d webcomic.

Seriously, we have this in jld, some deadpool issue, new avengers, secret avengers and others title too.

@aztek_the_lost: Maybe they're leaving on their own? I know that was the case with some titles. Others, not so sure. It's possible some creators only signed up for the first arc.

I'm not all to educated on DC, but is 'Avengers dark' an answer to Dark Avengers? Or vise versa maybe?

What the hell is with all these rotating doors of writers? How are we ever going to get a great series if they just change the writer every eight issues? I don't hate Lemire (in fact I love some of his stuff) but what was wrong with Milligan or any of the other writers getting the shaft?

It could be any number of things really, but imo its just DC seeing that Jeff is arguably the hottest writer at DC, so they talk to him about what he would like to write and they came to JLD

Pretty nice! I loved Lemire's run on the pre-Flashpoint Superboy so this should be interesting. I share Aztek's sentiments though in wondering what is going on with all the change-up in writers.

What's with all these writers leaving?

Anyway, Lemire might get me reading this again. I dropped it after issue 5 because I got bored of it. It still has a ton of potential but it's too slow for me.

Peter Milligan did a good job bringing together the current lineup to Justice League Dark. Some of the other characters needed more development but the story so far as been entertaining. I really like how the DC Dark series is merging the Vertigo universe more with the regular DC universe. I am excited to see Lemire working on another series in the New 52. I have really enjoyed the other books that he is currently working on. It would be interesting to see what other Vertigo writers could contribute to the New 52 series (Matt Wagner, Bryan Talbot, Peter Gross). Maybe we will see some cameos from the Vertigo universe like Doom Patrol, Timothy Hunter or even some of The Endless.

I don't know how I feel about this.

On one hand I'm sad that Peter Milligan is leaving. He's one of my favorite writers and it seems weird that DC is having this revolving door thing with writers. I get the feeling that DC is only looking for the series that sell. Those that didn't out of the new 52 got canceled, those that are selling fine but not huge numbers are getting a change in writers, and those that are selling huge stay the same. It's bizarre because Justice League Dark was both a financial and critical success. Changing writers just seems like their trying to improve something that doesn't need to be improved.

On the other hand, Animal Man is a awesome book. If anyone can take the reigns from Peter Milligan it's Jeff Lemire. He seems pretty passionate about it as well, which is always a good thing. His new ideas sound interesting and I'm interested to see who these new members are. Although if one of them doesn't use magic doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the team?....I'll wait and see who it is.

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm pretty sure something screwy is going on over at DC. First the writer of Static Shock leaves, now all the change in writers only a few issues in. Something is coco for cocopuffs over there.

I'm happy with this. I did not like JLD. It was one of the New 52 I was most excited about, but I gave up after a few issues. I just found it boring. I dunno how Constantine and Zatanna are boring, but in this series they were. I'll pick it back up when Lemire takes over.

Oh, and SexualLobster, since no one answered you, I will. No it has absolutely nothing to do with Dark Avengers.

The "Dark" in Justice League Dark means more like "occult" or "dark magic" or something like that, rather than "evil". It's about Zatanna and some of the other characters who deal with magic stuff. Lots of potential to the series with a good writer.

I am happy about this. The series was dragging, much like Red Lanterns. Peter Milligan seemed to be taking forever to form the team and progress the story.

I am very excited to see what Jeff Lemire can do with this series. (Provided that he doesn't drop Animal Man and/or Frankenstein, Agent of SHADE.)

EDIT: Nightmare confirmed. He is leaving Frankenstein. Matt Kindt is taking over.

I thought that Milligan did a good job in the first issue showning the need for the team when the Enchantress took out three of the Justice Leagues big guns (Superman, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg) very quickly.

Batman found himself ill suited to handle the I, Vampire threat so he called in the JLD.

In one way its disappointing news because Milligan is rocking this book, Stormwatch however is circling the drain and I honestly couldn't care less about it and Red Lanterns isn't that good. Also it will loose the weirdness he naturally brought with him during his story telling and which is spot on in JLD, and pretty much only in JLD.

On the plus side Lemire is one of the best writers in DC atm...probably only beaten by Morrison in consistency and I trust it will be of the same caliber we will get.

Holy...man I've never been so saddened/overjoyed all at once!!! I mean I LOVE Milligan!!! And read JLD because of the concept/his involvement, but Lemire coming on board has made my day. Cornell's SW did jack all for me and I had to drop that book, but Milligan coming on board?! All I need to hear is that another, worthy artist's coming on that book with him and I'm 90% sold on jumping back on that book.

I think the changed in writers is DC making hard (maybe rash, in some cases) decisions in an attempt to make or keep books successful. It seems like Animal Man has been doing well, but JLD has maybe not been doing as great, so putting Animal Man's writer on the book might be a way to boost sales. It certainly has made me interested in the book, more than I was before, anyway.

Not really sure how I feel about this. JLD wasn't bad under Peter Milligan, the first story was just slow to pick up on. I haven't read much of Jeff Lemire's work, but I heard great things about Sweet Tooth and Animal Man.

Ah, well I guess as long as he's given Hellblazer I'll be happy, although the quote does indicate he did not leave the book by choice. I wonder if this mean Shade leaves with him?

Lemire said that two characters from Milligan's arc will be leaving. I'd bet good money that it'll be Shade/Mind Warp since they are Milligan's pet characters. Shade I'll miss, but Mind Warp? Honestly never got a feel for dude in the first arc, maybe I'll grow to be invested in the character by the time issue 8 rolls around.

The only bat book we do not need is the David finch book. Other than that he has always been in Detective, Batman, Justice League, and JLA International. They needed Batman and Robin so they could have story that focus on him and robin, since their are some people out their that still the care about robin for unknown reason.

I was worried about his work load with adding JLD on top of Sweet Tooth, Animal Man, Frankenstein, and his upcoming creator owned series. Turns out he'll be leaving Frankenstein and Kindt (Revolver, My Greatest Adventure) will be taking over.

I dropped this book after the first three issues. Wasn't really into it. But now that Jeff Lemire is taking over, I might give it another try. I still wish that they would have changed the artist along with Jeff Lemire being the new writer. I don't really like Mikal Janin's style all that much. It was okay, but wish there was another artist.

He still will be writing two other on-goings (just like Milligan) and he will probably start writing another creator owned series. So yeah, he's still busy.
