James Franco And Kirsten Dunst Talk Spider-Man Reboot

What do these two actors think about the franchise reboot?

Now that the Spider-Man franchise has a new director and is being rebooted, it's interesting to hear what those involved with the first trilogy think.  James Franco played Harry Osborn and Kirsten Dunst was Mary Jane.  Both have recently shared their opinion on the franchise.  Dunst was set to reprise her role as MJ and even though Harry died in Spider-Man 3, we all know how death doesn't really stick to the Osborns.

E! Online reported Franco's thoughts at the Sundance Film Festival opening.

I don't have a problem with that. It worked out well for Batman, and comics themselves have different artists and writers. I think it's perfectly fine.

I think for the viewers you want a little space [between Raimi's and Webb's flicks], so you can get everyone else out of your head.

Franco makes a good point.  Change isn't always a bad thing.  It would've been nice if Sony simply decided to continue rather than start back at the beginning but we did see a reboot with Batman Begins.  Also the fact that if a new direction takes place too soon after the previous version, there would be the inevitable comparisons.  A new direction of a franchise should be able to stand on its own.  It doesn't seem likely that we'll simply let that go when the new Spider-Man movie comes out.

What about Kirsten Dunst?  She had a bigger stake here.  She was signed on to play Mary Jane again.  Now, she's lost that gig.  Dunst spoke about the change a few nights ago.

It's sad to see it end. I think for Sam it was time for him to move on, and so we're all going to move on with him. But we've had a good 10 years.

Of course she's sad.  But I think most Spider-Man fans are happy that we won't see Dunst as Mary Jane again.

What are your hopes for the new direction?  What areas should they focus on?  Do you think the casting choices could be better?  What about the stories?  Should they limit the number of villains?  Who should be the villain in the next movie?  We are now starting over with the filmmakers and have to wait all over to hear what will happen next.

"But I think most Spider-Man fans are happy that we won't see Dunst as Mary Jane again. "

not me, i thought she was a perfect MJ.

Tobey Maguire never convinced me that it was the same Peter Parker from the books. though i do like his take on PP,

thinking about the cast of the three Raimi films (they're great!), it seems a damn shame to turf it all out and go the re-boot. but hey, change can be tough and challenging, potentially, we could end up with something much, much better.

So, you want a film adaptation of "The Spectacular Spider-man" TV show?

I think topher grace should be spidey because topher can be serious but also funny like spiderman in the comics.Tobey  never really seemed to pull off the funny aspect of the character

I second Topher too...however if they decide to take him back to his high school days, then they'll probably have to get someone younger.

That last sentance was just cruel. "Of course she's sad.  But I think most Spider-Man fans are happy that we won't see Dunst as Mary Jane again." I respect criticism, but that was uncalled for Gman.

Since the first Spiderman movie the whole cast was new to me. I couldn't see Kirsten Dunst as MJ and I didn't know who Tobey was.

But, because the movies turned out as good as they did, I accepted them as the movie version of the characters. And, I'd seen the actors in other things where I liked their work.

Now, I have no problems with their playing the characters, even if they don't like playing them.

If you'd asked me 10, 15, 20 or 30 years ago who should be cast in the roles, my answers would have been very different from the way these turned out.

Also, I actually meet much more people who liked Kirsten Dunst in the role than didn't. Much, much more. Whatever my own opinion may have been, it meant nothing.

Dunst had said before that she didn't like doing it and didn't want to do another one. That must be terrible because you know how much she was getting paid.

I just hope they don't make the new spiderman a revenges against jocks story.  I wish they would play up more on how smart he is and pick a stronger person to play him.

hmmm. judging by the difference in their attitudes, id almost say it sounds as if Sony already
gave James a really nice new role to fill, and Kirsten, well...

I did look her up nice red, amazing looks
but can she pull out a MJ role ? Still I'd cast a complete unknown to play Peter Parker/Spider Man

Her attitude takes away from her looks if you ask me.  There's confident, and then there is cocky.  And her voice is annoying at times.

Two things make me sad when i think about the Spidey-reboot:

1. No more JK Simmons as JJ

2. We'll never see Dylan Baker transform into the Lizard

I liked Toby as Peter Parker but there's always be ONE ideal Spider-man actor for me and that's the dude in the 90s cartoon(Christopher Daniel Barnes).  So i'm okay with the reboot just aslong as it's not Ultimate Spidey(shudder) and Sony decides to step aside and let Mr. Webb do his thing.
