Jackpot = Mary Jane? (Video Discussion)

G-Man talks about Amazing Spider-Man Annual and discusses the idea of Mary Jane having superpowers.

The Answer Has Been Finally Been Revealed

Did you read Amazing Spider-Man Annual this past week?  If so, you already know who Jackpot is or more importantly, is Jackpot Mary Jane?  Rather than simply review the annual, I wanted to discuss more whether or not Mary Jane should be Jackpot (and have super powers).  With all the talk about Jackpot before, I was surprise no one brought this up.  Were you guys aware the revealing issue was out?

Let me know what you think.

I think that Mary Jane as Jackpot is really the only way to keep her in the comic. If Mary Jane is Jackpot for me at least, it almost makes up for One More Day. I agree that Mary Jane has just been hanging there for years and if she now has super powers, she would have a purpose.

I'm going to add that I truly have not picked up a Spider-Man comic book in a very, very long time.  It seems like I haven't missed anything from the asinine story lines I've read that keep popping up.  It is quite simple; Peter Parker should always be a bachelor and should have ditched Mary Jane a long, long time ago.  I've never been fond of her and regardless of her current status, she needs to go and Pete truly needs different loves in his life.  I hear what  you are saying and you have sound reasoning but I've always felt Spidey/Peter Parker needs to kick MJ to the curb.

I wouldn´t like the fact thatMj was Jackpot. Haven´t got that issue, don´t know if i will buy it. I bought the first issue of Kraven´s First Hunt after not buying a Spider-Man issue in months because i heard some one talking wonders of it,read it, and was quite dissapointed. I thought it was completely predictable. Mary Jane is needed in the Spider-Man title, their emotional stability made it more accesible than a  Bruce Wayne-Tony Stark type of thing they´re trying to do with Pete. Let´s be honest, he was never a ladies-man, that´s why we loved him (let´s recognize the fact we all related to him in some ways)he was never a succesfull guy. So, why giving him a playboy-type of the eternal single and ureachable? I think it´s quite immature (in a way is like saying: Spidey´s mine! and no one elses! ) I would´nt like the fact that MJ got superpowers (which we do not know Jackpot has) because we already have Reed Richards-Sue Storm thing. W e also have the Pym marriage and many others. Why would we want another super-marriage?

The problem with Kraven's Last Hunt and even when Eddie Brock first became Venom, all MJ could do was cower at the thought of Spidey's villains coming after her.  It was lame and a disgrace to her character.  I do think Spidey needs someone for that emotional tie.  If you think about it, his life has been pretty sucky (besides having some cool powers).  Look at all the heartache he's gone through.  All the death and crap that has gone on around him.  This was part of the reason Quesada didn't want them married.  He feels that part of Spidey (and Peter's) character is being the down-on-his-luck guy.  Being married to a super-model doesn't fit that image.  Guess it was just easier to break them up than try to write a decent story with them.  Joe kept saying at Comic-Con that they can get back together and date.  But then what's the point of separating them?

I'll be honest and tell you that I never read Spider-Man until Straczynski took over "Amazing," but I thought MJ was really well written. I didn't see that gibbering coward hiding in a corner, I always found her to be tough as nails. She always came off as very independent and career minded, and sure she worried about her husband being killed, but who wouldn't? I don't see why giving her superpowers would make her worry any less. My biggest problem with Quesada's take on the relationship, was his argument that the marriage (as well as Peter's job) aged him. Of course it aged him! Quesada might want to stay eighteen forever, but most people grow up, and even Spidey has to get old someday. He's aged what? Ten years in the 45 he's been around? I think it's time for him to take that next step into adulthood and practice what he preaches, responsibility. Hell, even though they wanted to market the book to a younger audience it didn't get them to change the rating. All the Spidey comics I've been picking up since OMD have been stamped with that little "A" for "adult."
It bugs me, and this is just how I feel, that Quesada discarded an excellent character, just so he could relive his own lame misadventures as a young adult. It seems to me that the person that needs to grow up the most is Joey Q.

Straczynski did get some flack over his Gwen Stacy/Norman Osborn...revelation.  But let's think about the whole Gwen Stacy thing.  MJ is always just sitting there patting Peter on the back consoling him over losing a past love.  Even in the Sarah Osborn story, MJ just seemed too understanding.  It felt like they wanted to explore more of Peter's reaction but had to tip-toe around the issue because he was married.  Why would MJ put up with this?
Shame on you Spidey!
Shame on you Spidey!
Maybe MJ just didn't see the cover of this issue.

Also the argument has always been that 'kids' wouldn't be able to relate to a married Spider-Man.  Like you said, readers grow up.  I've been married for quite some time now.  With the increasing cost of comics, how many 'kids' are buying the comics month after month?  And isn't Ultimate Spider-Man successful enough and features a teen-age non-married Spider-Man to be there for those struggling over a married Spider-Man?

When we last saw MJ in Brand New Day, she's already shacking up (practically) with that actor dude, Bobby Carr.  Did anyone notice that they were sharing a bed in his mansion when she was visiting him?  There were hints that MJ knew who Spidey was yet there she was with this other dude.  Thankfully Spidey never got a look at her face.

I don't have "Sins Remembered" but I can see what you mean with the Gwen stuff, I'd get sick of that too (in fact, as far as a plot device goes, I am.)

Ugh! I hated seeing MJ's "return" in BND. I was even kinda offended that the only way they could fit one of Peter's (and Harry's) best friends into a story was to make her the arm-candy of some nobody character that we probably wont ever see again. I'd say the Paper Doll series was my least favorite of the new status quo, and, if anything, after that it was the closest I'd ever actually come to canceling my subscription.

Well I picked up this issue just because G-Man's video.
I think that Mj being jackpot would be cool and interesting, she is a very well known comic character even tought she doesnt even have superpowers.

married or not I think it would be cool if she where jackpot.
