J. Michael Straczynski Talks Future of BEFORE WATCHMEN & SUPERMAN EARTH ONE, Vol 3

What can we expect from DC Comics in these areas?

Both BEFORE WATCHMEN and SUPERMAN EARTH ONE comics have received mixed receptions. There are those that love and them and others that aren't too crazy about them. J. Michael Straczynski has been involved with both at DC Comics. In an interview with PreviewsWorld.com, he reveals a little information on the future for both.

When Straczynski was asked if he had other plans for more BEFORE WATCHMEN titles, this was his response:

Insofar as I know, this is it for the Before Watchmen books. Dan [DiDio] had a very specific vision of the cycle he wanted to investigate, and never once mentioned anything about this turning into some kind of long-term franchise. Not to say that might not happen someday, but I don't think it's on his or DC's radar at this juncture, and if it's not on theirs it's sure as heck not on mine.

Sounds like that might be the right choice. While we've had some good stories come under the BEFORE WATCHMEN line, there seems to be only so much that could or should be done. Obviously there are many that feel they shouldn't have been done in the first place. If this is the case, if DiDio had a plan for what he wanted produced, it's good to see that they know what the market wants or needs. Obviously more series could be made but it may be best to let the existing issues sink in before taking on more.

What about SUPERMAN EARTH ONE? Volume 2 has recently been released. If you read it (or checked out our spotlight on it), you know it ends with room for more stories to be told. On the topic of a third volume, Straczynski said the following:

I'm writing Volume 3 of Superman: Earth One, which is going to tie together elements from the first two books and answer the key question from Volume 1: who was that guy who ordered a hit on Krypton?

Good news for EARTH ONE fans. No indication of when he'll finish writing it and when it'll be released. We'll have to wait and see whether or not DC is finished with BEFORE WATCHMEN or if they'll plan to revisit the characters in the future.

Head over to PreviewsWorld to check out the complete interview with JMS.

Thanks to Cavemold for the heads up.

Your welcome sir , i agree with your comments on BW, it was time to end it, DC made its nice sale mark on BW but i think the market has had enough of BW. I think its main purpose was try to be a an event filler while marvel did its AVX, Now,thats over there really no need add on more.

Good to hear they won't be bleeding Watchmen dry after these miniseries are over. While I like Minutemen, all the other titles are pretty mediocre and really don't add much to Watchmen proper anyway.

AS for JMS superman vol 3 it should be a hot seller. DC has been kicking butt on those graphic novels.

I still can't wrap my head around how much people dislike Superman: Earth One. I loved both volumes of the book and can't wait for the next one. It and Batman.

As for the Watchmen books, I had kind of forgotten that they were even doing them. I had planned on waiting for trades on the series that interested me, but it seems like (on Comic Vine at least) they reviewed the first one or two issues of each book and then stopped talking about them altogether. The lack of conversation about the books can't make it seem like anyone is particularly interested in them, so DC quitting on the books isn't especially surprising.

yea i think they will put out a huge OM later in the year. Now if DC is done with BW will they still print Watchmen trades and BW? My answer is yes, they will slowly roll out trades. So they will still have the Watchmen rights.

@Cavemold: Of course they will. Watchmen is a valuable IP and it's in DC's interest as a company to maintain ownership of it.

I don't get the hate for Superman earth one, Vol. 2 was one of the better Superman stories I have read (I was kind of meh about Vol.1). I think Earth One's superman is much more interesting "modern" take on Superman than what they have been doing in new 52.

hopefully Superman: Earth One - Vol.3 will be out sometime next year, I really dont want to wait another 2 years for it lol.
Batman: Earth One - Vol.1 came out early this year and Vol.2 will be out next year (confirmed by Geoff Johns himself) why cant the same be done for Superman :P

I'm glad Straczynski is currently writing Volume 3 for Superman: Earth One. I agree on why many people have lackluster enthusiasm for the story, but for my sake I'm really enjoying it since for me a fresh restart of the Superman mythos in new light, and therefore Earth One is to DC what Ultimates is to Marvel in my humble opinion.

I'm glad Superman Earth One seems to be a decent seller, now if the next volume doesn't completely suck like the last two...

At about 13 bucks a pop I thought both books were worth the money. I took issue with both volumes on little things like some of the personality tweaks or character designs, but overall I think Straczynski is building a solid enough universe.

Geoff Johns's Batman Earth One on the other hand isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

I spoke to Superman Earth One artist Shane Davis recently at a con here in Brisbane and he said he is tied up for about 2 years with an indy project so the artist on Vol 3 will most likely be different unless his situation changes
