Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as Bane in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES? Wow… after months-upon-years of speculation and all the possibilities thrown out there, I never could’ve guessed those choices of villains and their respective actors, but Deadline says it’s all official.

BURBANK, CA, January 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.” In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
Hardy was, of course, cast a few months back into an unnamed role. Fans speculated that it might be Hugo Strange, Killer Croc or even GCPD curmudgeon Harvey Bullock… but they were all wrong. Out of all the villains left in the rogue’s gallery, Bane’s certainly one of the easiest to work into Nolan’s more realistic vision of the Bat-mythos. Venom isn’t too far off from any number of real anabolic steroids, of course. I can totally see Hardy pulling off the interesting duality Bane has as a cerebral brute, and this finally gives the movie Batman a villain who can legitimately kick his ass. == TEASER == Hathaway has shown up in the numerous rounds of actresses rumored to be the new love interest. Fans thought she might be Bruce Wayne’s one-time fiancé Julie Madison or Ra’s al-Ghul’s deadly daughter, Talia… but they were all wrong. I suppose there's some irony in her playing Selina Kyle when she was heavily rumored to play the Black Cat in the unrealized fourth SPIDER-MAN movie.
I’m sure we’ve got some strong opinions in the Comic Vine community. I know they’re both going to have a a hell of hard act to follow with Heath Ledger’s Joker, and I still think there are probably a couple more villains who have yet to be revealed, myself. Thoughts, my friends?
Why are people saying this puny 5'9'' guy can pull off Bane's physique. Obviously you don't get it. Bane is a foot taller than this half-pint and Bane is 200 pounds heavier. This guy can put on 50 pounds of muscle and put on shoe lifts and he'll still be too small. Nathan Jones (The Protector, Troy) has the perfect look and physique for Bane, look at him in the beginning of Troy. That's Bane.

No, I want Bane to be how he is in the comics. He's not a 5'9'' English guy with tattoos. So how is Hardy perfect? If he were perfect, he'd be a foot taller and 200 pounds heavier. I am a fan of Bane. I've read Vengeance of Bane, and Knightfall and Secret Six and other comics with Bane too. So what? And I don't see this guy as Bane. He looks nothing like him. Why can't they get a guy Bane's size, and follow as much of the comics storyline as they can. He doesn't have to roar and act dumb just because you get a hulking type guy to play him. But obviously everyone here thinks you can only get one side of Bane right. Which I don't think he's gonna do right anyway. I've never seen Bane have to jump up to hit Batman in the face. You see, the point Bane was created is for Batman to be matched physically like a Killer Croc, but also have the mind of a genius. Two dangerous foes in one. So now the size and strength factor has been eliminated for the next movie.

Hmm I'm not really liking the idea of Anne Hathaway being Catwoman. When I think Catwoman, I think someone flirty, tough, bold, gritty. I don't see that in Anne Hathaway. With the exception of The Devil Wears Prada, I've seen her mostly as the good and nice girl. You know basically for girly movies. And maybe a fast, slutty type. But that depends on your view of her in Brokeback Mountain. But she still doesn't seem like Catwoman material to me.
But I'm open to the idea, Nolan's movies have been good so far. So hopefully he knows what he's doing by casting her.

Talia appeared in the episodes off balance,demons quest(2 part),avatar. Also in superman TAS(same continuity),episode called the demon reborn and in Batman beyond episode out of the past(only love interest to appear in that entire series)but she suffered a horrible fate.

my theory for bane in batman 3 is that he was also a student of ra's al ghul and tried to finish ra's job in trying to destroy gotham...it makes sense if bane wants to know the secret identity of batman since they have similar histories.
I don't know what to think besides Nolan knowing what he thinks will work and I will follow him until more information. After the thought of Hugo and Talia where mention to be the main villains I became so hyped that this makes me a bit sad...
Bane better be a genius to match wits and not just a big dumb brute like the last awful horror movie he was in...

Iv not realy seen her in anything thats why am not so sure but she might turn out to be grate, I mean i thought heath ledger was an insane choice for the joker but it just showed how wrong i was lol.

Um am not sure where i seen it but it was an interview with chris nolan and he didnt come right out and say it but it just sounded like they where going to end it with a big full stop. not having a cliff hanger wouldnt do that, there plenty of movies with sequels that wherent set up in the one before. I'm not sure what sure with anne as catwoman but tom hardy is a brilliant actor so am sure hell be grate.

Watch her in Havoc, folk. Dope movie and she's definitely a bad girl in that flick.
I dont know why people are moaning about zsaz,riddler and strange. because batman vs a serial killer or a green chump who hangs around simply for the sake of old days,has'nt been a threat since forever and is actually inferior to bane in smarts would make for really good movies?yeah right. strange did'nt make it cause now way would nolan copy a video game and lets get serious,i wonder how many people were in strange's favour prior to arkham city trailer.black mask was out due to red skull appearing in cap(would have drawn comparisions),croc,ivy ,freeze and clayface never had a chance,hush is just an evil mary sue. and grant morrison dislikes hush too. this leaves us with bane and deadshot,and bane won cause his background is more interesting.

I wouldn't call Hathaway an ugly woman but I wouldn't call her hot either. She's kind of meh.

Anne Hathaway, in my opinion, is a great actress. But all I've seen her in is comdies, so not so sure about this. I think she could pull it off though.
And for all the haters out there, sometimes you need to shake things up. Remember Nolan used Scarecrow and Ra's for the first movie (not your typical villains in Batman's film history.) And this will be an opportunity for Bane's character to be redeemed after that atrocious portrayal in Batman and Robin (of which we will never speak of again.) Great to see Nolan making some unconventional choices in casting. Anne Hathaway is versatile and talented. I'm becoming more and more convinced she'd make an excellent Selina Kyle.
I'm not sure if there's enough time in one movie for the Knightfall storyline (everyone remember Bane in the first Animated series.) Nolan does have a big challenge after the Dark Knight. I'm more interested in how the story is going to compete than the actors.
i just hope there will be a crap load of features on the DVD this time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we deserve a commentary on the DVD too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, I am an unregistered voter!!!
Casting Hathaway in the role of Catwoman for me is a cross between two well known actresses that had the roll before her, Julie Newmar and Lee Meriwether. There seem to be similar likeness to both actress which is more so then the images of Selina Kyle in the comics for me.
My choice would have been the actress from V the mini series, but then I'm not a casting director so I'll respect the choice given. Bane on the other hand I'm going to really enjoy in TDKR just for the fact I know he won't be grunting and moaning like in Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin.
I just hope this movie come out good. I'm admitedlly not the biggest Batman fan, though I do like his world and the characters around him very much. Bane wouldn't have been my pic for a main villain, I was hoping for a kind of burried character that hasn't been shown a lot of spotlight like someone like The Wrath for example but who knows, maybe The Dark Knight Rises will make me a fan of ol' Bane, I kinda like him in Secret Six, with what they were able to do with the Joker I can only hope Bane gets the same treatment. Catwoman, I like the idea of incorporating Batman's supporting cast well which I haven't really seen done since Burton's Batman film run, Batman Returns made me a fan of Catwoman's hopefully she's done just as well or better, as for Anne Hathaway I think with a haircut and dye she should be able to pull off whatever they need in Nolan's Catwoman role. When super-flix reach to a 3rd iteration they usually dissappoint, I'm just hoping for an awesome movie!
