Is Star Wars Going to be Re-Re-Released?

Lucas wants more of your money.

No Caption Provided
In 1977, 1980, and 1983, the original Star Wars films were released on the big screen and took the world by storm by becoming the most popular science fiction films of all time. Then in 1997, 20 years after the release of the first film, the Star Wars Trilogy was re-released with updated sound and special effects. Looking at home, the series was released at least 4 separate times on VHS and DVD, and each time, something minor was improved.

Bleeding Cool recently learned that they could be doing another release of the trilogy. In an interview with ForceCast, sound engineers Matt Wood and Dave Acord mentioned that they have changed one of the sound effects in the original film and "at some point audiences will be hearing that scene again with the new sound effect." By the look of the sentence, it seems we'll be getting yet another release of the film in theaters, at least with the sound changed up.

Another rumor running around town, which has been for a few years now, is that the original trilogy will get the 3D treatment. Lucasfilms has yet to say whether or not we'll be seeing a 3D Star Wars update, but if this trend continues to be popular for another 5 years, then I'm guessing Star Wars 3D will happen. But does it need to happen? Why does everything have to be in 3D? How about instead of doing all these updates to the film, they re-release the ORIGINAL trilogy as it was back in 1977? No updated special effects, Luke screaming as he falls after getting his hand cut off, no Greedo shooting first, and no Hayden Christianson in the clouds at the end of Jedi. That's what I'd like to see considering that I didn't get to see the first two films in the theater, only the Return of the Jedi. What do you guys think? Do we need another re-release?

I seem to remember a few years back there was a rumor that all 6 we being remastered and editted for DVD release. Which I thought made sense since there wasn't (and still isn't) a complete saga DVD available.

And from what I remember by remastered and editted it meant that the first 3 would stay 1997 style with a few music cues changed and the new 3 would have less Jar Jar. Which I think we can all agree would be a good thing.

FRELL NO!!!
enough with the self indulgent tweeking.
the only version of star wars that should be released once and for all is the scenes with Biggs Darklighter, we know they were filmed, they are in some promo and behind the scenes footage and as a special feature- the star wars holiday special 1979!!
seriously that is the only piece of star wars lore never to be released.

Why not instead of re-re-releasing the originals he uses the 30+ years of video games, comics and books that he has at his disposal to release new Star Wars movies.  They should be the James Bond of Science Fiction, conceivably a new Star Wars every three or so years.  You could go off of the Knights of the Old Republic for the next 30 years alone.  I don't know why he continues to tinker with the original masterpieces that changed movie making forever.  If he wanted to make a perfect movie he had the vehicle in the prequel trilogies and failed to live up to the originals.  I love them all and watch them all the time, but I would prefer new movies with new characters as opposed to him further tinkering with his magnum opus original creations and ruining the character that they had.  Who is with me on this?

Doesn't really matter. As long as no one is out there doing a Star Wars original trilogy reboot.

recently lucus has been adding a little touch of gay to every thing he makes. Like the ground hogs in indiana Jones IV. Touch rerelease something unless it adds to the story. A sound effect? Really Im gonna have to pay 10 bucks for a new sound effect? and every time they transfer a movie into 3d it sucks...

Star Wars is his movie.  Not yours.  As consumers it's totally fine to complain and moan about how he's ruining it (which may well be true), but it's his name in the credits.  He can do whatever he damn well pleases, even if it pisses me off.

Honestly this is a pretty good representation of anti-prequels fans.  The newer 3 have issues out the ass for sure, but instead of logically discussing their merits and faults, "DA TROO FANS" just get aggressive and use hyperbole (or violence, shown here) as means of justifying their claims.  Instead of film, the issue at hand.

Worst news of the day.  Next thing you know Lucas will want to do remake them all.  Spare, it's stale.  We all can play the films(Episodes IV-VI) in our brains over and over again(I'd like to burn I-III out of my brain).  A re-release is not going to do as well as it did 12 years ago, and 3D is a waste of money for him considering the crappy "added-on" 3D effects for Clash of the Titans.  It ruined the film.  Sure ILM can do it all and more but let's chill with the Star Wars.  The last three were a huge dissapointment.  Now if the "original" 3 are re-released in 3D, more overkill and even more ridicule.  Enough's enough already.  It's weak-sauce in this day.  Argue all you want, it's more "kiddy" than cool in 2010.

No? Has nothing to do with disagreeing. It has everything to do with it already being said in this thread, not to mention countless other times elsewhere, ergo either you're unoriginal or didn't put all that much thought into it. Fact! You regurgitated nothing but drivel that's been endlessly repeated by Lucas fanboys for years now in their blindly defensive nature to protect the dwindling credibility of their nerd god. Secondly, what reasonable and self-respecting human being would actually argue that it's only Lucas's story? Only George Lucas himself (or his drones) in some ravingly selfish "MINE MINE MINE" playground rant would do that. Are you George? The Original Trilogy was a humongous collaboration of the efforts of many, unarguably spawning one of the most celebrated and beloved film trilogies of all-time. The Prequels were made under an Empire and Palpatine now wore flannel. It was his word of approval or it just wasn't happening. Art and film-making was now governed like a business. What came out of that process? Arguably the biggest cinematic disappointments of all-time to which a majority would seemingly agree. When film is released and becomes so successful with the public, leaving a lasting impact, it becomes ours. We should get a say in the film-making process and story progression. This is why many filmmakers do listen to the fans, it wasn't about pleasing themselves but an attempt to please as many as humanly possible. Compromise! Have some self-respect! But...you're welcome to bow down to me if you like. I wouldn't stop you.

And I can't say I've ever seen Prequel haters use the holier-than-thou "true fan" moniker, that belongs almost exclusively to those lonely Prequel supporters. So you're missing the point behind the Deadpool strip: it's not mocking the haters, it's a commentary on the poor quality of the prequels.

Money money money. Just put them all in the vault for 20 years like Disney does and then re-release them for a whole new generation. Hey if the guy still makes money on them who are we to complain. I would be interested to see if he could pull off a decent 3D on the original trilogy. We have seen the horrid(Clash of the Titans) and the wretched(Airbender) for movies that were shot 2D and then shoe horned into 3D. Can Lucas do better?

I wouldn't mind I actually love Star Wars so much that I like to see 3d and remastered versions and can manage to ignore Hayden Christiansons (I don't care if I spelt it wrong so don't bother me about it he's a terrible actor) terrible Darth Vader pre limb slicing.

Despite hating the 3D trend (at least the movies that add it in AFTER they are made), I wouldn't mind seeing the original Triology get the 3D treatment ;>> At least that way it would be a chance for me to actually see 3 of my favorite films (that were out before I was born) on the big screen for the first time.

@MysterioMaximus:
Star Wars is George Lucas', just like your little neckbeard tirade is yours.  Captain America is Marvel's.  The Dark Side of the Moon is Pink Floyd's.  I don't have a say in any of it, I just appreciate it.  Really it's more self-righteous of you to keep saying "MINE MINE MINE" to everything, or at least "OURS OURS OURS", just because it is a piece of art you enjoy.  If I'm a writer of fiction (like I am), it is my name on the cover.  It is my hard work and my blood, sweat, and tears.  I'll take criticism and pointers as best I can, but in the end it is not YOUR book.  It's my book, and you happened to like it.  If I decide to change it, it's not your place to bitch.  If I make a sequel that you deem isn't as good, that's my fault, not yours.  Star Wars is personal to me and yet it is not mine; memories are, and feelings are, and experiences are, but my name is nowhere in the credits so I can’t do jack, much less do I care what the fuck they do.   I already have my personal semantics.  Since you're douchey enough to write all that shit just to make your masturbation more pleasurable, don’t even respond since by all accounts you’ll have nothing noteworthy to say.

edit: I'd also like to point out that art can be created for the sake of yourself, or the sake of art.  Watchmen wasn't written because Alan Moore wanted to emotionally blow you, it was because it was something he himself wanted to express, even if no one cared.  There's a difference between "hey here are some good writing tips" and “BOW TO MY WHIM, FOR I GO OUT OF MY WAY TO UPLOAD BAD PICTURES OF MYSELF TO WEBSITES OUT OF COMPLETELY MEANINGLESS SELF-IMPORTANCE"  So basically you're saying that the more recent films were made out of a pathological empire hellbent on appealing to ONE type of person, and you hate it.  So, instead, you'd prefer it if films were made out of a pathological empire hellbent on appealing to you.  Way to shit all over the creative process, turd.

Hmmm,
I guess I don't  really care how many times Lucas re-re-releases the Original Trilogy.  It is his movie and as long as audiences keep flocking to see the newest version he;s concocted  I imagine he'll keep messing with them. But what really bothers me is not that "new enhanced versions" exist it's that they act like there never was an original version in the first place. It really bugs me, you can not choose the copy you most like for your own personal library. Your kind of stuck with whatever version Lucas likes at the moment whether you prefer it or not.

I was lucky enough to keep my original THX VHS versions to compare with all the new movie edits. Its quite amazing all of the changes he's made to it since their original theatrical releases yet the original ones still hold up rather well.  It just sad that wasn't until a few years back that the untouched originals where put out on DVD but relegated to a special feature with no sound or picture quality restorations. Even then, they were a limited edition release and now they are very hard to find. I have always wondered why the company was so dead set against relesing the originals when fans clearly wanted them on DVD (now BluRay).

Every year at the San Diego Comic Con some Star Wars fan would routinely ask Steve Sansweet or a any number of Reps from Lucas films why no OG Copies. The response was pretty much always the same "Lucas feels he never go to make the movie in his head so now the technology has caught up he wants to make that movie". Even the year they advertised the limited editions The impression I got  when fans asked why it took so long for Lucas to Release the OG versions on DVD and why they were not the main DVD featured on the disc (They were a special feature only). The response was "its George's movies and he doesn't much like the old ones".  I got the impression the only reason they put out the orignials as a special feature was because of the black market bootlegs.  I know several people who have DVD copies from the OG laser disk versions.

I kind of wish Lucas would take a cue from the Star Treks Remastered versions...offer us new cool effects with enhanced sound and graphics but give us the originals to compare them too and enjoy. What do you have to loose? At any rate Mr. Lucas, make as many version tweaks as you like but let us choose which one we love as well for our collection.
Pappy's just sayin!...Who's it going to hurt?!

P.S.   ....HAN SHOT FIRST!

" It's really no big deal. Honestly, the differences are so small that I could care less and I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I never even noticed that Han didn't shoot first when I saw the re-releases. I just wish that Lucas would stop flogging the horse. There's no horse left. Time to move on and work on other stuff and leave the Star Wars universe in the hands of someone who can write an actual story. "
I feel the same way.  I never noticed the Han/Greedo thing until years later, when I heard it mentioned, and I certainly didn't lose any sleep over it.  I suppose the original is best, but as you say, the differences really aren't that great.

Speaking of the 3D technology used in Avatar, it makes me wonder if they could use it to put the original cast (IV-VI) in a final trilogy.  Age wouldn't matter, as it could be digitally adjusted to whatever the script required.

Of course he's going to re-release Star Wars again. HD? 3D? I don't know, it's just going to happen, I can tell you that much.

George Lucas has always been obsessed with special effects. For better or worse, he's always pursuing the latest enhancements, that's why Star Wars has been polished up and re-released more than any other movie. So yeah, you don't need to be a genius to see Star Wras 3D coming...

Oh and if I remember correctly the raw, non-special edition of the Original Trilogy was released on DVD a couple of years back. Can't recall ever seeing it though...

Yes, definitely re-release them.  Any excuse to see them on the big screen again, DVD versions, original, or something new.
