Is Star Wars Going to be Re-Re-Released?

Lucas wants more of your money.

In 1977, 1980, and 1983, the original Star Wars films were released on the big screen and took the world by storm by becoming the most popular science fiction films of all time. Then in 1997, 20 years after the release of the first film, the Star Wars Trilogy was re-released with updated sound and special effects. Looking at home, the series was released at least 4 separate times on VHS and DVD, and each time, something minor was improved.

Bleeding Cool recently learned that they could be doing another release of the trilogy. In an interview with ForceCast, sound engineers Matt Wood and Dave Acord mentioned that they have changed one of the sound effects in the original film and "at some point audiences will be hearing that scene again with the new sound effect." By the look of the sentence, it seems we'll be getting yet another release of the film in theaters, at least with the sound changed up.

Another rumor running around town, which has been for a few years now, is that the original trilogy will get the 3D treatment. Lucasfilms has yet to say whether or not we'll be seeing a 3D Star Wars update, but if this trend continues to be popular for another 5 years, then I'm guessing Star Wars 3D will happen. But does it need to happen? Why does everything have to be in 3D? How about instead of doing all these updates to the film, they re-release the ORIGINAL trilogy as it was back in 1977? No updated special effects, Luke screaming as he falls after getting his hand cut off, no Greedo shooting first, and no Hayden Christianson in the clouds at the end of Jedi. That's what I'd like to see considering that I didn't get to see the first two films in the theater, only the Return of the Jedi. What do you guys think? Do we need another re-release?
