Interview: James Robinson Reveals DC's Latest LGBT Character

SPOILER ALERT: The writer discusses the decision to make the leader of the EARTH 2 Justice Society an LGBT character and why that doesn't really matter.

Some writers, like James Robinson, are familiar with writing LGBT characters. Perhaps this is why the decision to re-introduce one of DC's oldest characters as an LGBT character in the New 52 came so easily for the man who wrote the first kiss shared between two gay characters in a comic book. We had the chance to catch up with James and talk to him about the decision, ask him why it was (and wasn't) an important decision, and what readers can expect out of his EARTH 2 series.

No Caption Provided

We also get a look at two pages from EARTH 2 #2, the upcoming issue of his ongoing DC title. Finally, due to the time constraint we were unable to ask all the questions we wanted to ask. We also know there are a lot of questions many of you might have about the decision and the series overall which is why we have invited James to join us for next Friday's podcast (Friday, June 8th 2012). Please submit your questions and comments for James to podcast@comicvine.com. If you don't mind the spoiler before the release of EARTH 2 issue #2, check out the full interview below.

Comic Vine: Why Alan Scott? Was this your choice? Was it an Editorial decision and how and when did the decision come about?

James Robinson: It came about 8 months ago when I was first putting the team together. One of the things that bothered me about the reboot and about the Justice Society being young again was that there were some characters that would no longer exist. One of those characters is Obsidian, Alan Scott's gay son. So from then on I started to think about it and it seemed like a logical leap to make Alan Scott gay. And the idea that the leader of the Justice Society, the most honorable, dynamic and gallant hero on Earth 2 would be a gay man just seemed like a really cool and interesting direction for the character.

So it was my idea, but to be fair Dan DiDio, when he heard about the idea, there wasn't a moment of hesitation on his part. He thought it was a great idea

CV: My next question is actually about Obsidian and Jade. Pre-New 52 Alan Scott had had a romantic relationship with Rose Canton and the two characters had twin babies, Obsidian and Jade. Now that Scott has been reintroduced into the DC Universe as a gay character, does that mean neither of these characters (Obsidian and Jade) ever existed? Does that mean Scott and Rose never had a relationship?

JR: Remember, this is a reboot. Not a relaunch. There are sweeping changes that were made in the DC Universe and one of those is that Jade and Obsidian couldn't exist because Alan Scott is just too young -- he's about 27 years old now. So, they couldn't exist in that way but because they were popular characters I have been thinking of a way that they could exist that I might try and implement in the future, but that won't be for a while yet.

CV: As a writer, is it important to make Alan Scott a gay character or is this sort of a "non issue"? How do you see it?

JR: Well, it's not like "ooh, we've got a gay character" -- that's sort of been manufactured by fans, really. I think anyway. We've had this idea running for months and months and I didn't think it was a big deal, honestly. I really didn't think it was a big deal. I mean you should have them. Just like there are LGBT people in all aspects of society, it makes sense that there would be gay characters in comic books as well. And when Dan DiDio made that announcement he wasn't being cryptic, he was just making an off-handed comment. He feels the same way honestly. It's just the reality of life and it's not a big deal. I guess it is to some people and as a result there's been this wave of interest in the subject on the internet and in the media.

No Caption Provided

CV: Alan Scott is a Golden Age character, which means he has a lot of history. Did you worry about any negative reactions from long time fans of the character? Is this something you are anticipating? Or has the feedback so far been mainly positive?

JR: Well it's been mixed. Most people have been very positive and of course there are some people that have…I mean, yes he appeared in a few pages of EARTH 2 #1, but they haven't really gotten to know the character yet. I think there is a rush to pre judge from audiences online, but something I want to stress is that what I want to do with all the EARTH 2 characters is not…I'm not trying to change them in any radical way. In fact I think I am being very faithful to the characters and their origins from the 1940's. These characters have aged…the continuity for Alan Scott, for example, if you follow it is very strange and convoluted. He was an engineer, then a news reader, then he owned the radio station, then he lost his job and became a scientist, then he somehow got back his radio station…So, there's a lot of stuff that's been lead on the character and all I am doing is stripping a lot of that away [getting back to his roots]. What was he back in the day? He was this young, gallant, dynamic take-charge, type A personality, very brave and very caring -- he wanted to protect the world. He was the big powerhouse of the Golden Age characters, in a way. All of that hasn't changed. All that's changed is that the media that he is the master of is the internet media. He's just moving with the times. And in a way he's just moving with the times again. In every way he's the same dynamic, likable Alan Scott that he was before -- all I've really changed is his sexuality; which to me is just one factor of him and it isn't that big of a deal in the first place.

CV: Romantic relationships, will we be seeing any?

JR: At first I'm setting up the team and dealing with threats to the world and everything, but there will be breather moments where we do see what people get up to outside of being a superhero. So yes, you will see romantic relationships.

CV: Are you excited?

JR: I've grown more excited as people have grown excited and interested in it. I was more concerned with other aspects of EARTH 2, Alan Scott's sexuality was just a small part of it but the fact that people have responded so mostly favorably, I am very happy that this have been given the reception that it has been given.

No Caption Provided

CV: Now, this isn't the first time you've written a gay character in comics, you've actually written a gay character in the past, right?

JR: I actually believe I wrote the first gay kiss -- male gay kiss -- in a comic book back in STARMAN #45. So, I've been doing this sort of thing for a while and it isn't that I have any kind of agenda or anything, it's just that when it suits the story and when it makes sense for that character it's just a realistic depiction of present day society.

CV: In your eyes do you feel it's important to have the leader of the EARTH 2 Justice Society be a gay male?

JR: Well, is it important? Not necessarily. But I think it's cool and it makes a change. I mean one of the things that can happen with gay characters is that when they are on a team they sometimes get pushed aside and their whole identity is wrapped up in this "oh that's the gay character." But when you meet Alan Scott you will find that there are so many [other things that define who he is] different aspects to his life, who he is as a person. I mean, I live in San Francisco, I have plenty of gay friends and their sexuality is just a part of who they are. Obviously there's a whole lot more to all of them and Alan Scott is the same way. By making him the team leader there really is no way that I can't show that aspect of a gay person through him being so at the forefront of the team, and that has to be a good thing. This character is going to be very likable, very brave and he will be someone that a lot of people like. I mean, if there are teenage kids and they like Alan Scott and he is kid is going though his or her own feelings about being LGBT…if it helps him or her in any little way, or if a kid reads Alan Scott and he really likes the character and that makes him think twice about bullying a kid, you know, that's a fantastic plus to the character being the leader of the team.

CV: What can we expect in issue #2 of EARTH 2?

JR: The book -- based on the cover -- is sort of apparent. It really focuses a lot on the origin of Jay Garrick and how he becomes the Flash and his origin as the Flash and why he becomes the Flash. What you will also see is the first appearance of Mr. Terrific from his own comic, and you will meet a major villain in the EARTH 2 universe that Mr. Terrific will encounter. That will be a huge part of the second arc. You will also see more of Alan Scott, who he is and what kind of a person he is and some of his origin will be played out in issue #2 and that will be picked up in issue #3 and by issue #3 he will be the Green Lantern.

Issue #2 of EARTH 2 hits stores on June 6th, 2012. We were lucky enough to have the chance to ask James all these questions about EARTH 2, Alan Scott and what we can anticipate in his ongoing series -- but we also want to give you a chance to ask James questions as well. Mr. Robinson will be joining us on our podcast next Friday, June 8th 2012 to discuss the release of issue #2 and anything else you want to talk to him about. Email your questions and comments to podcast@comicvine.com. You can also follow James on Twitter @JamesdRobinson. What do you think of the news?

I find this dumb. Why not make Jay Garrick gay if u want a prominent character sure he had a wife but he never had any kids so it has no longterm impact. Or skip alan scott and just go straight to obsidian and jade. Or turn some other random character like al pratt who has no following of note. or stuff in the most recent starman, its a reboot right problem solved.

Awkward for you... In the article, you know, the one that apparently Thanos did not read, James states that he hopes to introduce the characters anyway, eventually.

So... Uhmm...I'm not going to ask you if you know how to read, because if you can't you won't even understand the question initially, rendering the sentence moot.

Its true though. In fact, I think making Alan Scott gay would have higher chances of Jade and Obsidian appearing. If he isn't gay we still got to wait for him to fall in love and get married then have kids and for then wait for 20 years for them to grow up.

How long do 20 years in RL's time?

Probably 40-50 years in RL's time. But now that he is gay, Obsidian and Jade can be adopted.

I still kinda want to see Obsidian and Jade as Alan's flesh and blood. Couldn't he donate sperm or something while he was younger?

That depends on when and how he got his powers. Since their powers come from him having powers.

Alan Scott's gay. This is the worst thing DC has ever done! -looks at his old costume- .....On second thought this is starting to make some sense. I'm just kidding I really don't know what to feel about this Alan my second favorite JSA character next to Ted Grant but I'm fine with having another openly gay character since Obsidian's gone my only true question for Earth 2 is this: Will Wesley Dodd make his grand return as Sandman or will Sandy Harkin still carry the gas mask & fedora? Also if Stargirl is apart of this continuity?

There is only one issue out, so James hasn't mapped out his universe yet, but you can give him questions at the next podcast, and he may answer them.

Even if he donated sperm at 16, he is still around mid twenies. That'll probably take another 10 comic years to introduce Jade and Obsidian.

But it doesn't matter for them to be flesh and blood. I'm good with an adoption. Doesn't change anything anyways.

Hmm I suppose you can give them powers via blood transfusion assuming his powers affect his DNA. Then again its magic so there are some possible cheats.

They could come from the future like Cable. I don't think it will happen. I guess adoption would be good as well. I just prefer that their power comes from him instead of someone else. If that can be incorporated in some ways, I'm happy.

I'm all for diversifying the DCU but I hate when they just turn a character gay. Either way I'm not gonna make any snap judgements until I read the issue.

True, but two things to consider:

1. DC has done a reboot. This is their one chance to change characters, still make sense and cause the least amount of confusion.

2. If they want to diversify DC comics, and won't turn any characters, a whole bunch of gay characters will have to be added to do so, giving the Universe more characters, like they need that...

Also, editing a character with such a long history not only makes him refreshing, but shows that cool and well-known characters can be gay too, and that DC doesn't just need to make new ones to seem diverse.

Who's to say said poster is only addressing others in the forum? This is not new news, and has been known for a few weeks now. A lot of criticism has been cast and all said poster has stated is that people should move on and not get hung up on something so progressive, at least that's the vibe I got. Which is true? James has only the best intentions for Alan, and let's not forget he wrote Jade in JLA last before the reboot, so it's not like he doesn't like her (or her brother) and wants them to disappear.

It's clear to anyone that you were wrong, and trying to justify it with "the writer changed his mind" despite that this is only now official news doesn't make any sense.

How is that logical? On the contrary, choosing the one character who had a gay son pre-reboot is just very weird. Is Robinson trying to say that being gay is purely genetic? That you actually inherit this trait from a line of closeted ancestors?

I was actually very intrigued by whom DC would choose but that is just a very stupid pick.

And yes, it is annoying that DC rebooted the JSA/Earth-2. What I do not get is why they wanted to do so in the first place. They could have kept its continuity and just relocate it all on Earth-2. Similarly to the Legion (which did not get rebooted) it is not like those are the most famous characters. It is very much a niche market and DC is just getting rid of his old fanbase with stunts like that.

I knew they were going to erase Obsidian (and Jade) from existence, I just knew it. Dangit! There goes one of my favorite characters. Alan Scott being gay doesn't bother me, I just wish the whole idea behind it didn't start because they were erasing his LGBT son. I hope Robinson brings them back and, for a few brownie points from me, brings Damon Matthews back as well. Loved him and Todd together.

Lol, maybe its because the first line in his argument pisses me of. I mean really he had a gay son so lets make him gay? I mean really I am pretty sure more gay guys have straight parents. Although, I am also kinda annoyed JSA Old Guys got rebooted into their twenties because that screws a lot of good legacies also perhaps a bit of ageism.

This is pretty cool, it's great to have some openly gay male characters in comics, I think they have been playing it safe with lesbians for awhile, I guess lesbians are more marketable with the main target audience?

This is really the kind of thing that make me hate the big comic industry.

I have nothing against having a gay, hetero, bi characters but making it like an "event" to make "look at us we are so open minded" is disgusting. Especially when marvel and dc are doing the same.

For me it is another exemple that those compagny have only one thing in the head : money, money, money.

This is the stupidest thing ever. So, he basically erased Obsidian (who I liked fine as is) and then decided, "Well, I got rid of him...might as well make his dad gay to make up for it! Have to keep the status quo!" And, before anyone shouts "homophobe" or "intolerant" Wiccan and Hulking are probably my favourite couple in comics, ever. I also love Apollo and Midnighter. This has ZERO to do with any sexual orientation, and everything to do with changing characters around willy nilly.

Alan Scott realized he loved Molly/Harlequin all along, and then he went to HELL AND FOUGHT FOR HER SOUL! And, the two stuck by each other, happily. I liked that! This is like One More Day, except, at the end Peter Parker turns gay. It's like if Scarlet Witch resurrected her "real" children, and Wiccan disappeared and was replaced by an identical new version...except he was straight. That would piss me off and seriously make me contemplate dropping Marvel.

Bottom line, they shouldn't have to change ANYONE'S sexual orientation. They should be able to write a new meaningful character and fit them into the universe in an important and main way. The way they did this is making buzz all about his being gay, it's like that's the only thing they can be bothered to say to bring interest up...he's gay now, GIVE US YOUR MONEY!

Somebody once said, one day we'll have a gay character who has a personal story revolving around more than just being a gay character.

That day is not today.

Does anyone know if they have a permanent artist? DC has a habit of changing artists around very often. I'm rather fond of this style, so I hope they don't change the artist anytime soon. It doesn't matter how good a storyline is, if the art is bad, I just can't get into it.

It's w/e. I liked him straight. The change is about as meaningful as making Carter Hall a eunuch and Lyta Hall Inuit. This is a stunt. There are gay characters in the DCU, some particularly badass (cough midnighter cough) who could be brought to the forefront. There are mantels that could be taken up. They could create entirely new characters. They don't though. They do this. It's w/e. I liked him straight. Maybe I'm just a bigot.

Nah, it's not bigotry. I do understand how you feel because I would get angry if characters like Wiccan and Midnighter somehow become straight. Regardless, I like that he's being put in the spotlight again. He rarely appears anymore before the reboot. I personally like the change, but I do understand why people don't like it. At the end of the day, I just hope the book itself is good. That's all that matter to me. :)

I dropped Stormwatch because of the in your face relationship between Apollo and Midnighter, I have no prob with them being gay but hugs and kisses bother be... during Warren Ellis time on the Authority that never happened, so I guess I'm not going to pic this one up.

It's basically a whole new character, so that's fine. It's always weird when writers try to retro fit homosexuality onto a character, and almost always feels like an attention grab. I hope his gay lifestyle does not become Alan's only defining character trait though. One of my biggest problems with Mark Millar's turn on Authority is that being gay became the sole defining trait of the Midnighter and Apollo, making them pretty boring characters.

Seems like they were trying to make something a big deal but in doing it the way they did it they made it really not that big.

Making characters gay doesn't create quite the expected commotion anymore, I wonder when they are going to take it a step ahead and introduce the first zoophile characters. THAT should boost the sales: for example: "Aquaman, the dolphin lover" or "Tigra, a night at the zoo".

My issue here is not with whether a character is gay or not. In fact, I absolutely adore the idea of DC exploring new interpretations for established characters. I love it when they shake up things this way. If they don't work out, they can always reboot it again, but at least they've tried doing something fresh and new.

But no, that's not my problem. I saw this article in the featured section of the Comic Vine homepage, with its huge SPOILER ALERT text written all over it. That would have been fine, if it weren't for the fact that the picture that accompanied it was, in fact, a clear spoiler of who this character was. Why do you even bother telling readers there will be spoilers in the text when you are spoiling the surprise with the image you are posting?

So, yeah. Thanks a bunch, Sara Lima.

I'm still anti-DCNU, but I don't particularly mind this. After all, isn't the whole point of Earth-2 to see different versions of characters? My only problem is that this is the only Alan Scott in current continuity.

Makes sense. This was a simple change to make. While he's an established character, he's old enough where I don't think anyone but hardcore JSA fans would possibly care. You won't get the "fan" on the street all revved up about this.

I think they present the right attitude too. "Yes we're doing this and we're doing it specifically for this reason but we don't see a big deal about that really." And they're well aware that Jade and Obsidian fans will want those characters in some other way.

Honestly, I think the idea of a young-again JSA is more controversial than a gay Alan Scott. For a long time now the JSA has been about being the eldest generation of heroes managing their legacy. What are they now that they're just an alt-U JLA?

@NlGHTCRAWLER: Agreed, i like how its done in teen titans, they have a gay character but that just expands on his personality i think in 10 issues its mentioned only abt twice, though here the GL seems to be in a relationship so dont kno how much it'll be addressed.

I don't know what you were reading, but Bunker is such a huge gay stereotype it's not even funny. All the women trust him implicitly, skitter is attracted to him before realizing he's gay, he speaks in a saucy latino accent, he's a quip machine he's all in purple? Sure, it's all well and good that they only really brought it up in the dialogue once or twice, but he's still a horrible example of a Gay Best Friend, and is little more than a cardboard cutout.

Patton Oswalt says it better than me. This is what he is, and it's not good

lol! Awesome. And yeah, good point, it's meaningful that it's the leader of the team that's gay and not a GBF.

I really don't think James Robinson wanted this to be a "stunt". This was his idea, I applaud it. Corporate and Media outlets can do or say whatever they want. It is Mr. Robinson's story. I, for one, love his writing. And Nicola Scott is an amazing artist. Can't wait for this story to unfold. Bravo!

If it really didn't matter then they wouldn't have teased it and made a big deal about it.

To be honest, who cares if the New 52 Earth-2 Alan's gay, guys? As said, only hardcore fans would be affected. And besides, to be perfectly honest, it doesn't matter. Different Earth, different rules. That's all I gotta say about that. Besides, it could add a depth to the New 52 Earth-2 Alan's character with this as a factor to his character. It'd be interesting to see how we see his relationship with his boyfriend developes over the course of the story, as well as how it may be with Sam if he finds out about Alan being Green Lantern when the time comes.

To be honest I was just 'oh, it's Alan Scott'. Then it sunk in 'wait, this is the Golden Age Green Lantern'. Then I thought 'meh, new iteration'.

I'll be honest. I'm not crazy about this decision, but I'm more relieved that it's not Jay.

I am still kinda sceptical about whole ''Young JSA ! '' thing as James said. It kinda feels weird to see these Golden Age Veterans as their younger origin-selves... Well I may get used to it later on.

As it asked however.. what will happen to Jade and Obsidian ? I don't have a problem with Alan being gay and all ( frankly I am relieved that they didn't throw Wally under the bus 'Just for the sake of it ! ' ) , I just hope this ''reboot'' won't erase everything we know.

It will be a challenge for me to get used to this new version of JSA but I am willing to give them a chance at least until their first big arc against a big villian etc and see how they work.

Well it's a good thing they didn't make a big deal out of it then isn't it.

The only reason we even knew they where changing a characters orientation, is because a fan specifically asked Didio at Kapow, why they weren't changing orientations. He said their stance on that had changed, and actually we would be seeing a character in the DCNU who had been changed.

That's it. Didio was pretty straight up about it, but as always happens comicbook sites all jumped on it and started bombarding DC with questions. Which led to the press statement. DC didn't make a big deal out of it, everyone else did and they responded.
