Interview: J.M. DeMatteis and Keith Giffen Talk JUSTICE LEAGUE 3000

The future looks bright for the DC Universe and it looks like there will be a Justice League there waiting.

It doesn't matter how many times we've seen a future or alternate universe story centered around our favorite characters. There's always something appealing and exciting about the idea. Looking towards the future, there are limitless possibilities. That's something that we'll be seeing soon in the DC Universe.

Last week it was announced that J.M. DeMatteis and Keith Giffen were writing a JUSTICE LEAGUE 3000 series. We saw some images so of course we'd have a bunch of questions. We tried finding out as much as we could. Here's what the guys had to say.

Comic Vine: Does this title fit into the Legion of Super-Heroes timeline?

J.M. DeMatteis: Legion of Super-Heroes? That name’s familiar, but I can’t quite place it...

Keith Giffen: Only in that it takes place in the 31st century. This is not a Legion book.

CV: Will we see the formation of the team or will they already have been united?

KG: Both actually.

JMD: We’ll come in on them already united (albeit at an early stage of the game)...and part of the fun will be doubling back to find out just how they came together. One thing you should know right off the bat: things aren’t necessarily what they seem.

CV: The choice to go with future renditions of the current Justice League makes sense but will we also see versions of other character not necessarily tied to the JL?

KG: I mean, never say never but I'd really like to get JL3000 up and running on its own before ringing in alternate versions of Hawkman or the Atom or whoever. That said, I did pirate the name "Fatal Five" so...

JMD: One of the great things here is that we’re in a future universe that’s not bogged down in continuity; so we’re free to create and expand in as many directions as we’d like. We can build an entire universe of new, and old, characters. No limits.

CV: Is there the possibility of any direct descendants taking on the mantle of the current heroes?

JMD: That’s assuming these aren’t the current heroes. I’m not saying they are, but I’m not saying they’re not. (It’s an annoying answer, I know, but it’s the best I can do at the moment. There are surprises ahead and I don’t want to ruin them.)

KG: Nope. No direct descendants, no Legionnaires in disguise, none of that.

CV: Does this mean there's always (usually) some form of Batman, Superman, etc throughout time?

KG: Ooooh... loaded question. I'm going to say... I haven't the slightest idea but suspect the answer is no.

JMD: I can’t answer for all time, only for the 31st Century.

CV: The released images didn't show a version of Aquaman. Is there just more to come or could this say something about Atlantis in the future?

JMD: Aquaman could absolutely show up some time down the line, but, for now, we’re concentrating on the Big Five. As for Atlantis in the future...you just gave us a great idea!

KG: There's a lot more to come.

CV: Will the action take place on Earth, space, all over the place?

JMD: All of the above.

KG: Earth, space, all over the place... Sounds like a lost Fireball XL-5 lyric. But yes, yes it will. All over the place.

CV: How much of the past history is known to these heroes? Has there been detailed records or could there be gaps throughout history?

JMD: That’s a fascinating question. Of course, I can’t tell you why that question is so fascinating—but you’ll find out when you read the book.

KG: Major gaps. Great Disaster anyone?

CV: Can we assume these characters are heroes and not a bunch of villains in some strange futuristic twist of fate?

JMD: They are absolutely heroes. They are absolutely the Justice League. Except when they’re not.

CV: Here's the inevitable question, will there be an eventual crossover between the two times?

JMD: We can’t rule it out, but I don’t see it happening for a very long time.

Looks like we'll have to stay tuned to find out more information.

@g_manWhen does This come out?

The brush off to anything about how this relates to the Legion is getting annoying.

I'm pretty excited about this book...it sounds like it could be pretty cool

My interest died with the answer to the very first question

Edited by Mucklefluga

Im very fascinated to the replies to the questions about the characters identities.

Hmmm, I don't see HOW it can be the same JL we have now, unless they've gained immortality.

I don't know anything from these writers, but I'm really exited for this book.

That was a really frustrating interview that almost gave no answers at all.

Not your fault, Tony, you tried, but I don't get why those two do interviews if they don't want to talk about it. I really dislike those "funny" answers from creators.

@Nahuel : You must be pretty new to the whole comic thing if you don't know those two. Check out the original Justice league International from the 80s to get an idea.

I'm either going with Earth 2 future,OR regular Earth future, but young hero characters dressing up and presenting theirselves as the legendary JL of old ala Yong Avengers, over at Marvel.

Spoilers:

They're (probably) clones.

I'm not a DC guy....

But damn Flash 3000 looks bad-ass

:D

I'm pumped for this. I love books that are outside of the continuity. I also like futuristic worlds, I hope the team delivers

Why are guys using spoiler tags, when your only guessing? Lol

Clones,or earth 2,or new young heroes (ala young avengers) all sounds cool, when added to being in the future, humor, and letting the creative team world build with no one saying you can't do that.

Why doesn't someone ask these guys what powers this Superman has, because that would explain a lot, atleast about who this is.

They're (probably) clones.

What makes you say that?

Posted by blkson

Really starting to get pissed off at how these guys respond during interviews. I hate how they're being so vague and snarky about this book. I really don't even care about the Legion but, the way they keep going about this-- its like they're saying,

"screw y'all and the Legion, this is what we're doing, like it or not!"

This is not how you get people excited about a book that seems like a damn gimmick to begin with. This is sounding so dumb. The more and more I hear from these guys, the less I like the idea.

Good. The LOSHverse sucks anyway.

@blkson: I really don't know where all this anger is coming from,it's a book that is going to have a lot of mystery in it,and it hasn't even been solicited yet,so the book is atleast 3 months away.chill pills help, even during this age of instant gratification.

Edited by blkson

@stephens2177: I just don't like how they do interviews. And this book seems so gimmicky to me. Also how do you know its going to have alot of mystery in it?

Posted by Omega-Man

@flazam:

This Batman won't be Terry Mcginnis this takes place at least 700 years after Batman Beyond Terry will be dead and gone before this even takes place. Kal Kent is a bit much since he takes place in the year one million not the year 3000 which is after the 31st century.

I'd expect this to be Wally, mainly because he hasn't been shown yet and DC will want him in there just not at the expense of Barry being out or Bart so they will heavily change his origin. Donna Troy is iffy, since she could be Fury on Earth 2 it's not known what her real name is yet.

@spitfireink: lol.

Another future JL book, meh! Can anyone in DC beyond the "Big 5" get some shine.

pretty sure its gonna be, what happens if the current dcu happend a thousand years into the future, as in this is bruce, clark etc except his parents dying or ship crashing just takes place in a thousand years instead of now. so its the current justice league...set in the future.

It's completely unrelated.

These guys are trying to promote their new book. It is obviously unrelated to Legion. Yet people keep asking the freaking question. How annoying would it be for you to be really jazzed about your new book and everyone seems to be hyper focusing on how another, completely unrelated book interacts with your's?

Constantine

Aquaman

Red Hood

Nightwing

Animal Man

Swamp Thing

The Suicide Squad

Batwing

All of the Earth Green Lanterns

Larfleeze

Jonah Hex

The Red Lanterns

Supergirl

Batgirl

Superboy

The Teen Titans

Phantom Stranger

Pandora

Vibe

And that's not counting the 30 or some odd other titles that DC gave a chance but the readers were too stupid to read like I Vampire, Team 7, Deathstroke, Demon Knights, Voodoo, Grifter etc

People constantly complain about DC only caring about Batman/Superman/Justice League, but really, they have come up with TONS of other characters in the New 52. It's just people go for the familiar and house hold names instead of taking a chance on a B or C lister. So naturally, like Marvel does with X-Men and Avengers, DC produces more of their A listers to get money, it's how the game is played.

right because we don't need anything original in comics any more >_>

So did DC force them to do this interview? Seemingly no interest in hyping the comic, just giving the simplest sarcastic response possible.

To be honest, I'd rather have unoriginal and well written than unique and boring. LOSH hasn't been good since the New 52 started, and hasn't been that good LONG before then.

They didn't even try and sell LOSH. It sickens me that all these pepole are saying stuff like "oh I love future team books I'll pick this up" why the hell were they not picking up the Legion then?

Because it didn't have Batman Superman and the rest of DC's cash cows.

The Legion is canceled as of two months before this book launches. It takes place during the Legion's timeline. Why shouldn't you expect people to ask? The Legion has existed for something like 60+ years. At times it has been amongst the best selling of DCs titles (it pushed Superboy out of Adventure Comics). While Legion may be at a low point, currently, that doesn't mean it isn't a viable property. The two may not be "related" but the questions being asked are legitimate.

It'd be like starting up a new team based in Gotham and not expecting people to ask, "How does this relate to Batman?" and being told, "Who is Batman???"

Posted by fACEmelter88

I wonder what series that I really like and is pretty good will be canceled to make room for JL 3000. They already took my I,Vampire what will they take next?!

Edited by End_Boss

Man, they might as well have issued a "no comment." There's really nothing worth discussing here, except the same questions we all had going in.

Don't know why but i got the biggest feeling of Deja vu while reading this interview.

Edited by stephens2177

Jesus you guys embarrass the rest of us comic readers when you whine, bitch, and expect to know things before its time to,I'm pretty sure none of you are 1 or 2,so why are acting like it?

I actually buy all the main "cash cow" hero separate books, but I also buy earth 2 and young avengers, and I love clones, and legacy heroes,so this all sounds like fun comics to me.
