Interview: Dan Jurgens Discusses AQUAMAN AND THE OTHERS

Jurgens talks about his upcoming team book, debuting in April.

A new 52 story line, from the current run of AQUAMAN , got a lot of people interested in this new, mysterious group called The Others, who each have their own Atlantian relic and were once on a team with Aquaman. This April, Dan Jurgens will be writing the new on-going series and he took the time out of his schedule to answer a few questions.

Comic Vine: How did you land the job of writing this book?

Dan Jurgens: Dan DiDio was the first to bring it up and asked if I had any familiarity with the characters or thoughts on what we might be able to do with them. We batted around some general ideas, found common ground and I went forward from there.

CV: What did you like about the characters and story from the original arc by Geoff Johns?

DJ: Geoff did a fabulous job of bringing the characters on stage, telling a story that was set in the present while also telling a story of their past. Along the way he managed to define the characters to a necessary extent while, at the same time, dropping hints about their backgrounds that made us want to read more.

CV: What will this first arc be about?

DJ: We're going to explore the nature of the Atlantean relics a little more. Exactly how do they function? Why do they work? Would any individual weapon work the same for one owner as another? We know they were fashioned by Atlan, but there is more to the story than that. It will touch on Atlantis' past while giving readers better understanding of how the Atlantean relics function and what effect they have on the individual characters.

CV: What makes this team different from all the other DC super-hero teams?

DJ: This is a very disparate group of individuals. Everyone who's in the Justice League wants to be there to serve a higher ideal. The Others are more loosely associated than that. Prisoner-of-War, for example, desperately needs the other team members around him in order to stay sane and balanced. At this point in his life, the Operative is searching for deeper meaning. Ya'Wara has no real interest in being part of a team, yet there's something there that keeps her from leaving.

CV: Will this series touch on The Others team of the past or strictly focus on current continuity?

DJ: We'll be touching on the past as well as the present. The team's past is important and vital to who they are today and why they do what they do.

No Caption Provided

CV: Who is you favorite member of the Others and why?

DJ: Aquaman is fun simply because he's Aquaman. Geoff did a great job of remolding the character a bit.

Right now I'm drawn to Prisoner-of-War due to his complexity, as well as Ya'Wara, because of the edge to her personality. Makes for a good mix.

CV: How can Aquaman juggle his responsibilities to Atlantis as well as working with this team?

DJ: It's not a problem. Batman can handle Gotham and other responsibilities just as Superman can handle Metropolis and more. Like the old saying goes... if you want to get something done, give it to the busy man.

CV: What type of crossovers with other DC characters and concepts can readers expect?

DJ: Right now we need to focus on this core team. We need to make them compelling and interesting before bringing in others.

CV: Have you created any new villains or heroes strictly for this series? If so, what can you tell us about them?

DJ: Our very first story arc will rotate around the idea of some new villains. This group will harken all the way back to the day Atlan first fashioned the Atlantean talismans.

CV: What are you most excited for with this series?

DJ: This is a unique group made up of a very distinct and interesting assemblage of characters. Sculpting their future is enough to get any writer excited!

Thanks a lot to Dan Jurgens for answering some of our questions and make sure to check out AQUAMAN AND THE OTHERS this April!

I'm so excited for this book. It's going to be interesting to see how Jurgens expands The Others origins. And it has Aquaman! What can be better?

I'd love to see Vostok come back. Or someone else wearing that cool mask.

I'm all for Aquaman having his own supporting characters and these seemed like a great addition...but they ultimately did little for me. Maybe Jurgens can get more out of them.

The name though, The Others, is terrible.

Im all for this. Aquaman has been a fun ride (for me) since the beginning of the not-actually-a-new-52-but-more-like-a-new-42-plus-forever-evil-minis-but-it-should-really-be-called-"the 52"-and-just-drop-the-"new"-part (yay! my longest new 52 alternative title). I am slightly interested in "the others" but i am wondering when/if this is the title that other members of Aquamans main cast will be re-introduced into i.e. Aqualad and tempest? But so far its got my buy.

Very excited for this. The Others have probably been my favorite addition made my the New 52. They've got a really great dynamic and I love the way that they play off of Aquaman and one another. Looking forward to learning more about them.

Here's hoping that we still get to see glimpses of Kaina and Vostok through flashback, even thought they're dead in the present.

Probably the new DC #1 that I'm most interested in. Not familiar with Jurgens work however, but responses here seem to indicate he's good.

I think it's great that Aquaman is getting another series, especially with the others, but, well at least in my opinion Jurgens is not the greatest writer. His stuff I read in the New 52 were pretty bad honestly (imo), so i'm a little iffy on this. Don't hate me.

I'm not sure if I'll pick this up or not. But for some reason I'm leaning towards yes because it's a second Aquaman ongoing and that's just legendary.

The others are an interesting team and I think the book could be a sleeper hit if Jurgens can find their voices.

Tentatively excited for this title. I like Aquaman and I like the Others but I am unsure about Jurgens (never read any of his New 52 comics) and the prospect of someone other than Johns writing these cool characters. Hope for the best, I always say. :)

His name is Vostok. Black Manta killed him with The Dead King's Sceptor.

Pretty powerful. The orb would give him teleportation. The manacles would let him create some impressive forcefields (and they'd prolly be stronger, given it seems to be proportional to the user)

The helmet lets you live without water/oxygen/food/sleep. The seal of clarity lets you see and access ghost lands (possibly more)

So pretty badass. I'm hoping at one point he uses them all and fights some super bad guy

Orm was released/broke out during his Villains Month one-shot. He was currently residing with a woman and her son on the coast but Mera's self proclaimed husband Nereus found him to take back the Seven Seas. That will be an upcoming story line for Justice League.

I never cared for the Others. Plus, isn't this the same guy who brought us the abomination that was New 52 Justice League International? I liked Johns' Aquaman run in general but didn't like the Others. And the interlude issue in the middle of Death of a King and the recent Aquaman annual, both featuring the Others did not do a thing for me. I think they were both by John Ostrander. People here on the Vine were saying he was going to write this series, or take over the main Aquaman series. But now we've got Jurgens writing this and some guy I've never heard of writing Aquaman. I wish Johns would have stayed on him longer like he did on Green Lantern. But all in all, I'm not interested in this title. Nor do I think these characters deserve one while there are great classic characters in limbo.

You never heard of Jeff Parker? The guy is a very good writer.
For a character to get an ongoing it needs a writer who wants to tackle him/her/them. Not many have the vision or mood to reboot the Metal Men or the Doom Patrol. Also every time these teams get a reboot, they get canceled for low sales, you can't expect DC to bring them back all the time, when from a business standpoint the audience these titles serve isn't enough to hold the sales in a reasonable position in the market. The Others is a fresh team that most readers resonate with, it is only logical that DC will give them a chance. And they may became "classic" in a decade, you never know...If someone told that DC would make a Sinestro ongoing 10 years ago I would never believe them.
