Interview: Charles Soule Talks SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN, the "L" Word, and Doomsday

SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #6 gave us an explosive ending to the first arc of the series. Find out what's coming next.

We’ve just seen the end of the first arc in SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN by Charles Soule and Tony Daniel. So far, the series has mixed high octane action along with character development as we see the two heroes find their way in the world as heroes and as a couple. With the huge ending of the arc, we took the chance to ask Soule about the issue as well as what we can look forward to in the coming issues.

No Caption Provided

COMIC VINE: We see the two get a brief moment to discuss whether or not being together is affecting the way they work. Is that conversation over or will they touch upon it again later?

CHARLES SOULE: What I was trying to do with the end sequence of issue #6 was to try to put an end to that conversation. They know there are things they can do better together than apart. When push really came to shove, they came through. It was only something they could have done together. I don’t want to keep rehashing issues that they’ve already talked out. I mean, that can happen in actual relationships, but I think it would get boring for readers. They will have plenty of new challenges which to discuss, but that one I think is done.

I think, in a general sense, the first arc has been kind of about them feeling each other out and understanding who each other are. Then the second arc will be more about them changing and growing and having a relationship. It’ll be them seeing how they can still be together even though they’re changing and growing.

CV: We get to see some new armor from Hephaestus. Can we assume he’s responsible for the Invisible Jet as well?

CS: Yeah. I thought I made that very clear. He made them the sky chariot, basically, that they used. It was something that he had and used from time to time. He lent it to them so they could sneak up on Zod and Faora.

CV: Okay, I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t just assuming.

There’s been some confusion, in the New 52, over what has or hasn’t happened with Doomsday. We’ve seen him in this series and he’ll be in the upcoming crossover, how involved are you with fleshing out who Doomsday is in the New 52?

CS: Considering I’m one of the writers doing that event, I would say I’m pretty heavily involved. We are working on an event that is huge. We’re going to do a lot of innovated stuff. It’ll tell you who he is and what he’s been doing. You’re going to get a lot of that in the upcoming one-shot, which I believe is on sale in May. If you’re looking for Doomsday, that’s where you’re going to want to look.

CV: The word “love” comes up finally. Have you had this scene in your mind since you first started writing these two?

CS: Yup. I had the entire scene basically from when they get thrown into that abandoned nuclear plant, I knew everything that was going to happen before I started writing issue #1. Which is great. When you can build to an ending… It’s never easy writing a series like this with it all being as interconnected as it ended up being. But I knew that was how we were going to end. I’ve been looking forward to it for months and months at this point. It’s great to have people finally be able to read it to see what I was building towards. And Tony Daniel, you can’t discount Tony’s execution of that moment. He made it look exactly like I thought in my head, or maybe even better. The whole team just knocked it out of the park in this series.

CV: This first arc has been pretty epic. They’ve had to fight a powerful threat and we got a crazy ending. Do you plan to keep the momentum going or allow the two a moment to catch their breath?

CS: It’s one of those things where urgency was always the watchword on the first arc. We wanted to make sure they felt they were having a hard time catching a breath. That’s one of the challenges Superman and Wonder Woman face as a couple. There’s always something going on. They don’t really get that many quiet moments together. But, at the same time, I love writing the action. I also love writing character moments. So I’ve made a point of putting in some really strong character beats for them in the next few issues. I love that kind of writing. I think these books are like songs. If a song is just loud and in your face all the time, it’s not that enjoy—well, I mean thrash metal is fine, but I like something that has some loud moments and some quiet moments. It adds up to a more enjoyable whole. That’s what I’m trying to do with SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN.

No Caption Provided

CV: If they survive everything going on, will we see Superman vs Apollo, Round 2?

CS: That is something that is certainly in the back of my mind. You saw some of that with Strife, with what she talks about with Apollo, just before he unleashes the massive blast of sun that powers up Zod and Faora. She’s like, “If you do do this, it could start up a huge war between the gods and all these superhumans, and that’d be fine with me, because I like that stuff.” It’s a plot point that I’m aware of. Certainly, they’re not pals and that could be something that would be fun to do in the future. It wouldn’t be right away. I think we’ve seen Apollo for the time being. Maybe we’ll see him again but it might not be anytime soon.

CV: Do you plan to bring in any other Justice Leaguers in future issues?

CS: Yeah, absolutely. I don’t want to spoil it too much though, but an even like Doomed, with a threat as big as Doomsday, many different heroes are going to get involved. It’s not just going to be Superman and Wonder Woman. Although, of course, they would be the focus, in my title. The Doomed event, it touches pretty much all corners of the DCU. It’s going to be really cool.

SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #6 is now on sale. SUPERMAN: DOOMED begins in May.

And what are we supposed to assume happened to Zod and Faora? Surely if a weakened Superman survived the explosion, then two supercharged Kryptonians would not have been effected much at all.

Hard to believe people are still crying over "OMG Superman/WW" relationship...deal with it already lol.

It's meant nothing to how good the first arch has been, and now DD coming? oh yess...from what I've read and teases, he's going to be pretty damn powerful probably like H/P if not for more powerful even, if they're going to put the JL against him again? lol

I don't think the story in this comic is awful. I just don't believe it's one of those top tier awesome stories. In other words, plenty of other series have much better stories, in my opinion, so this is not one of the ones I look forward to every month.

How so(just curious what your reasoning is)?

He says why. She was always chasing him and he always rejected her for BS reasons like "If my enemies knew they'd come after you".... yeah bats I'd like to see what Bane can do to WW. People always say she supposed to be an independent woman and how doesn't need a man, the JL series WW was the opposite of that. At least here they both treat each other equally and have more in common.

@lvenger: No! You fail for criticizing something on it's own thread which is extremely disrespectful and saying something and not giving reason's as to why is not a good reason. Other than that I agree with all your other points.

Lets not get into arguments here. Everyone is entitled to their own likes and dislikes. There is no comic book, relationship pairing that will get everybody to praise it. One person may like it and the other dislike it. Me I'm enjoying sm/ww so far.

I love this comic. It is the best romance in a comic book so far, imo, that climax was a doozy. I actually called my wife over just to check it out, because I was just so pumped.

Its my favorite of the New 52, and this is what the New 52 as an idea was even created for: FRESH, EXCITING, storytelling.

Lois is the old and busted.

Superman and wonder woman make more sense than batman and wonder woman. It's just people that saw jlu series saw wonder woman chasing after batman which is more out of character than Geoff Johns writing batman. The reality is that the relationship depends on the writers and who they want to see together.

@mikep12: So I fail because I'm pointing out the obvious flaw in the criticism of those that don't read this book are stubborn and pig headed? Wow I did not see that till now and your blinkered post has totally made me see the light on how my reasonable, well structured and justifiable point makes no sense. I really feel I've learnt something here....

For the record, I'm only dealing with utterly wrong assertion that it's possible to dislike this series and not buy it without being stubborn or pig headed. I do give good reasoning and if that's not good enough, go see another thread on this topic, I don't want to fan the flames any more than necessary. I was only making the very clear point that it's possible to dislike the pairing, not read the comic and still have a good basis for their opinion just like supporters of the romance claim to do. Simple as that.

I don't hate the comic. the whole Relationship that both characters have are.... lacking to be honest. I admit not a fan of this pairing. I read the first arc it's good yes I admit but it would seem that the writer of this book seems to lack what a relationship is. True they work better together but so could a partnership with no romance. The coupling of Superman and Wonder Woman lacks everything. It has zero build up as to why they would get together in the first place.

Even this book, they are suppose to be together but don't show any affection toward each other. Hell even the last issue Supes says "I love you" and Diana only says "I know" if it was my relationship I'd ask her why wouldn't you say I love you too? It seems the love aspect is very one sided in this pairing, almost like Diana can't really love anything in a sexual way between a man and a woman. It's like she's turned off from it and is less human than Clark is. Or Clark loves her in the way between a man and a woman and Diana just loves him as a friend or a person. Thats the vibe I'm getting from Diana.

The comic itself is good, the conflict with the villains all good. But this whole comic was meant to bring about more aspects of their relationship, and really I feel it lacking. You think just because they held hands once in an attack on Zod and Faora is anything? ehh no. Just because they kiss a few times before this series means anything? Um, no. Superman has kissed Wonder Woman, before the new 52 but were never together. The whole pairing feels forced and it feels hollow, like they are together because they are expected to be together. Not because they love each other.

@lvenger:

Wow! You fail. Why would you post bad stuff about a comic on it's own article. The point is to get the comic out there and tell how good it is. You didn't even give good reasoning which makes it even worse. All you said is the book sucks and had a bad premise without explaining why. This is the equivalent of me going on the Marvel birthday thread and posting how DC is better.

I just can't get into the SM/WW relationship at all. Not that I care to see them with someone else, but I just don't find the premise of them together and a book around that interesting. It still just comes off as forced to me, having DC strongest male and female character together.

It's a bad comic, the premise is bad, the writing is terrible, the pairing is cliched and the romance DOES NOT WORK at all. Overall, it's absurd, fallacious and stupid to say what you've just said. Sorry but it really, really is. You're the one who's being stubborn, ridiculous and pig headed (names you unfairly sling I might add) by failing to acknowledge the possibility that there are justifiable reasons (which believe me, there are plenty I can name) as to why this comic sucks. So it's you who's absolutely 100% in the wrong here, not critics of the Superman/Wonder Woman romance with justifiable reasons why they don't like it. I have major issues with this book and I won't support it if it was the last comic on Earth. So well done, you've now turned this into a Superman/Wonder Woman thread war with this comment. Happy?!

@the_stegman: I would say you'd be pretty nuts if you were to throw money after something you know in advance you aren't going to like, even more so because if it is supported with your money, DC will just give you more of the same. It's like voting for a party you dont like and dont agree with in hopes of the one(s) you do like get better.

Because it's a good comic, and refusing to even give it a chance simply because you're against the pairing is ridiculous.

May I ask what everyone's opposition to a Superman/Wonder Woman relationship is? Is it that you don't like him not being with Lois? He's been around for I think 77 years? I think it's okay to try other relationships now. Is it that you find that moral systems incompatible? There's been other relationships where the morals don't line up that still make for good stories, such as the obvious examples of Batman/Catwoman or Spider-Man/Black Cat. I'm not sure what else the complaints could be here.

There’s always something going on. They don’t really get that many quiet moments together. But, at the same time, I love writing the action. I also love writing character moments.

Title with two such characters needs action, that’s given, but Mr. Soule could improve its quality a bit. Somewhat depthless action is the only gripe I have with this book by now. Anyway, very good book nevertheless, my second favorite in New-52.

I’ve made a point of putting in some really strong character beats for them in the next few issues.

Sounds promising.

Event like Doomed, with a threat as big as Doomsday, many different heroes are going to get involved, it touches pretty much all corners of the DCU.

Interesting. I knew that Doomed is going to be a big event, but in the same time I thought that it would be strictly Superman event, without some major consequences for the rest of DCU.
