In Brightest Day: Green Lantern Impresses At WonderCon Panel

Fans go crazy for that lovable scamp Ryan Reynolds in San Francisco.

The goofiest part of the initial trailer was nowhere to be seen today. Probably for the best.
The goofiest part of the initial trailer was nowhere to be seen today. Probably for the best.
Ryan Reynolds: the ladies love him. That's one lesson to take away from the panel that he, Geoff Johns, and Blake Lively threw here at WonderCon in San Francisco today; one fan made a comment that he must've chosen this particular superhero project because the outfit he was wearing gave him a chance to show off his abs, leading to multiple calls for him to take his shirt off from the distaff portion of the audience. Unfortunately for all, he politely demurred, explaining: "They did not provide a pole for me to dance on. If you sing Total Eclipse Of The Heart, though..."

Say what you will about Reynolds, but he's almost impossible to dislike in person, and always seems happy to be doing what must be the umpteenth press/fan event that he's been asked to show up for in his career. Luckily, he's supporting a project that he seems thrilled to be a part of: the big-budget release of Green Lantern this summer. The panel started off with a good six or seven-minute chunk of new footage, showcasing the hard work that hundreds of CGI artists are no doubt slaving away on even as we speak. It was much more impressive than the first trailer for the film, so let's break it down for you:

The footage begins with Abin Sur on board his spaceship, heading to parts unknown. Upon summoning a vision of Sinestro via his ring, he's informed that the Green Lantern he's heading to meet has been killed. Unfortunately, the audio in the convention hall was a bit rough, leading me to miss some of the dialogue here, but that wasn't necessary for the next sequence: upon hearing an odd sound outside of his ship, Abin is immediately attacked by the massive Parallax entity, represented here as a kind of massive yellow cloud of infuriated faces.
 == TEASER ==
No Caption Provided
It quickly does a number on Abin and his ship, knocking Abin back into his ship's power core, then knocking him back into the superstructure of the ship, where he takes a beating as he falls down into its innards. It looks to be a fairly big ship, but he manages to escape into a set of corridors. Not fast enough, though; despite a stream of green bolts that he flings at Parallax, it manages to land a vicious blow on his shoulder, forcing him to retreat to an escape pod, which quickly lands on Earth.

You can guess what happens next: Hal Jordan stands at the edge of the water, looking aghast at the spectacle before him. In a nice little moment, he's knocked out of his stupor when he sees Abin flailing in pain; his heroic impulses knock in and he jumps into the water to try and free him, only to be confronted with the spectacle of a big purple alien. Abin quickly dies, but not before he hands over a suspiciously green ring and lantern to Hal, telling him to recite the oath before the lantern to unlock the ring's powers.

Hal, of course, has no idea what the oath is, so he attempts: "I, Hal Jordon, do solemnly swear...to pledge allegiance." That nonsense seems to activate the lantern in some way, forging a psychic link of some sort, which allows Hal to say the actual Green Lantern oath: In brightest day, in blackest night...

No Caption Provided
Cut to Hal being shot out of Earth's atmosphere in a ball of green energy, warping past astonished astronauts at the International Space Station. (These clips are not going to be sequential in the movie, it seems; I'm sure the "big green fist hitting bullies" moment from the trailer will be somewhere in between him getting the ring and flying to Oa.) After a bit of interstellar travel, Oa appears, where Hal lands and finds himself ensuited in the famous green suit, where he's met by Tomar-Re, a fish-like Green Lantern (already sporting the voice of Geoffrey Rush, despite his involvement only being announced this week) who explains that he's there to help Hal learn the ropes of Lantern-dom. Hal quickly realizes that his ring has imparted a great deal of galactic knowledge to him, such as the number of intelligent species in each sector that the Green Lanterns protect.

The footage wrapped up with a rousing speech from Sinestro; imagine the Morpheus speech to the assembled masses of Zion in The Matrix Reloaded and you'll have an idea of the number of Lanterns assembled in front of the massive Central Power Battery. He outlines them all on the threat posed by Parallax and says that this is what the Corps was created to fight. A snide tone comes into his voice when he speaks of the death of Abin Sur, "our greatest warrior," whose suit will be difficult to fill. [Cut to the assembled Lanterns looking askance at the newest member of their organization.] Sinestro rallies the troops by saying, "I don't need to tell you who we are!" "WE ARE THE CORPS! WE ARE THE CORPS!" All of the Lanterns shine their rings in unison, creating a huge green beam that extends off of Oa into the interplanetary vacuum.

No Caption Provided
A montage sequence follows, showing more of the Earth-based action that I assume ensues when Hal is assigned back to his original sector. Flashes of Hal attempting to prevent a semi truck from exploding (perhaps a nod to Superman II), lots of Peter Sarsgaard as big-headed Hector Hammond, and a glimpse of what looks like Parallax attacking a warehouse on Earth, enveloping it and cracking its windows as it breaks inside. It'll be curious to see how they make the Earth-based stuff feel compelling after showing you the interstellar drama of Oa, but it looks fantastic. In theaters June 17th!

This movie is going to suck gigantic epic monkey balls. Warner Bros nor DC are pushing this movie like Marvel and Fox are pushing theirs. Most of what I hear from DC is about Superman: Man of Steel And TDKR. I hear very little of Green Lantern. I think it's because they know it sucks. Warner Bros is kind of taking the DC name in only being serious on their approaches to the top two. I mean look at what they're doing to Wonder Woman. And it wasn't the special effects that made the Green Lantern trailer unwatchable-it was the cheese dialog and awkward attempts with comedy. And then they wanted to end it with the Green Lantern oath being all serious and what not.
Green Lantern movie=Epic FAIL.
Ryan, you should have just stuck to Deadpool.

Whoa whoa whoa, calm down fella. Where is all of this negativity coming from? After following all of the Green Lantern movie discussion on this and other websites the fact that WB is sprucing up the CG is in accordance with every fan's wishes. The film is going to look amazing, end of story. But that was not your concern, apparently.

I do not want to start another long winded argument, so let me just reiterate what others have said. Dont judge the dialogue of an entire film based on a first trailer. First trailers are like teasers, feeling out what the reaction is so that changes can be made.

However, I do agree that they need to generate more buzz around the movie. Hence, the Wondercon panel and the release of new footage! The film still has 2 months before it comes out, plenty of time to crank out one or two more trailers.

So cheer up my friend! Its going to be great.

I plan to see this movie but personally I'm still not fond of the look of the suit... no matter how much I see it, I can't seem to like the whole "biological" look of the suit

While i somwhat agree with the woman in the BeyondTheTrailer, she definitely needs to lighten up and shut her trap, her voice is annoying :(

Btw, i hope we get some trailers soon because still images of CGI always look like arse.

I don't have high expectations for this movie at all. Not saying it'll suck, but I won't be that upset if it does.

After reading the Q&A on screened, I gotta say two things:
Bradly Cooper as the Flash? EPIC F&*$ING WIN.
JLA movie? Very very VERY cautiously optimistic.

I really don't get what all the hate is about other than some subpar special effects (which can be remedied in post production). Just because the first trailer was bad doesn't really mean much, trailers often make great films look boring and awful films look amazing. I'm reserving judgement on this one.

Grace Randolf WORKS for Marvel, what makes you think anything that comes out of her mouth isn't slanted?
WB is one of the biggest names in the film market and is incredibly tough on extending projects that they aren't confident in...they have already given the Green Light (hahaha get it) to two more sequels. This movie is going to be a huge surprise hit. Guaranteed.

I don't mind if there's going to be a bit of cheesy humor in it. Hal Jordan is supposed to be a cocky, overconfident, womanizing showoff in the beginning (and he doesn't lose the womanizing aspect). He'll probably turn into the serious good cop later on. Even some of the darkest films have some lighthearted humor in it, anyway. Whether the film turns out to be good or not, I'm sure the humor will be balanced out with some more serious scenes.  Honestly, I'm still not expecting much, but I'm hoping to be surprised. Its success could mean great things for the future of DCU movies.

Love or hate Hal Jordan, there's no way John Stewart could possibly be preferable.

I have to admit, as a Green Lantern fan, that the first GL trailer was very disconcerting for me. Now despite Blake Lively's flat performance (in the snippet of her) the OA footage looked fantastic and it had me somewhat excited. But when I saw the Captain America trailer I was blown away (and I'm not a huge fan of the Cap. im getting there though). But all these preconceived ideas and opinions are just that. No one has seen the movie and will not be able to judge it until we see it. So sit back and relax. We only have few months to go.

I have to admit, I'm not nearly up to par on my DC 'verse knowledge.  I've always been more of a Marvel girl, but I've also always had a thing for Green Lantern and Flash, so I'm insanely excited to see this movie!!

After reading some of the comments and concerns here, I may be the only one (or not) but I thought Fantastic Four looked like it was going to be one of those simple movies with cheesy lines and undermined characters that tried to hard, (which I still sort of thought it turned out to be) but I still enjoyed it.  Regardless of whether it does the actual comics justice or not, it's still going to be great.  And let's remember, it can't be any worse than some of the animated flicks. =/

Movie gonna suxor real hard! Because they didn't pick                       to play the main character and also                       is an @$$ that can't even act. They should have done a panel by panel copy paste of                         because I said it and that is what I would have liked to see when I will  eventually download                         .

Not as bad as I thought it would be. They don't show Blake in this trailer though, probably because her performance is getting really bad reviews so far. The CGI looks good to me though.

Like it or not man but stewart is the least likely to get his own movie,if they had'nt gone for jordan it would definitely have been rayner, jordans success is DC's and green lanterns success. If this movie flops then that's it,warner is'nt gonna care if it was stewart, gardener or jordan. They're gonna think the franchise sucks altogether, let's be a little openminded here.

WB knows this movie is gonna suck. YOU know this movie is gonna suck.  I know this movie is gonna suck. This is just going to be another 'Steel'. Maybe an 'Electra'. But if you're lucky, it's gonna be a 'Daredevil: Directors' cut, or a 'Ghost Rider'. The movie getting the least amount of a push over at Marvel at Fox-X-Men: First Class, is getting more play than GL. All the different posters, TV spots, trailers, video games, I just don't see that kind of faith (or pressure) coming from DC/Warner Brothers for Green Lantern. All I keep hearing is about developments with their upcoming TV shows (news about Wonder Woman and her costume I guess is more interesting), and of the the films: Superman: Man of Steel, and The Dark Knight Rises. It's like their saying, "We know Green Lantern is gonna SUCK, but, hey, we got these great other movies coming, hows 'bout it, huh? Huh? HUH?!?!?

They already alienated a lot of viewers who grew up thinking John Stewart was the Green Lantern. Anyone who grew up thinking that from watching Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited was like "who is this guy??" That show has been on for the last TEN YEARS, watched and beloved by many. More people have watched that cartoon than the ones who would even admit to stepping foot into a comic shop. That's why they make cartoons: it is easily more accessible than comics for public consumption. John Stewart is in the movie, but the kids and adults who grew up with John Stewart expected more than just lame a cameo.

The movie studios know that the fanboys are going to see the movie regardless, if only to be disappointed. The big draw is the untapped market, the ones who aren't familiar with the comic outnumber those who do. Great job in getting those people interested and excited.
Giant. Epic. DONKEY KONG-SIZED....I think I made my point.

So basically according to you Warner wants this movie to crash?
you think it sucks cause it does'nt have your preferred character,
please spare us the trolling, majority of the criticism on the first trailer was directed towards CGI,Blake lively and the overboard attempt at humour,NOT HAL JORDAN.John stewart would have gotten the same response same goes for rayner and gardener.Like johns/Jordan or not(and i dont like the current direction of GL btw)but they've made green lantern the one of biggest franchises in their company.
If this movie failes then green lantern fails as a whole,so if you're day dreaming about stewart getting a movie incase this movie fails...well dream on that's all what i have to say.

I hate it when fanboys whine with their ill-conceived pre-conceptions about almost everything. I think it's time I spit some facts.

1. The movie is still in post-production and lots of work is still being applied to post-production. One cannot compare the overall look and theme of Green Lantern to Captain America or Thor. Green Lantern showcases bizarre alien worlds and races, costumes and weapons made of light energy and a lot of green! It will be extremely hard to pull any of this off realistic-looking fashion. The recent footage does prove that a lot of improvements have been made.

2. John Stewart will most likely make a cameo appreance in the movie. He will be portrayed by Nick Jones, an actual Marine officer turned small time actor. On Twitter, Nick described his scene as a bar fight, which is most likely based on the Marines verses Air Force bar fight in the Green Lantern: Secret Origin comic book. Chances are, he may have a larger role in sequels (if Green Lantern is successful enough and if WB/DC is smart enough).

3. We have only seen Blake Lively in a two 3 to 5 second scenes in the trailer. There is no way one can gage her performance in the entire movie based upon that.

4. Someone said that Bradley Cooper will play The Flash in his upcoming titular movie. I know the actor denied this last year. Have this been officially stated anywhere?

The movie getting the least amount of a push over at Marvel at Fox-X-Men: First Class, is getting more play than GL. All the different posters, TV spots, trailers, video games, I just don't see that kind of faith (or pressure) coming from DC/Warner Brothers for Green Lantern. All I keep hearing is about developments with their upcoming TV shows (news about Wonder Woman and her costume I guess is more interesting), and of the the films: Superman: Man of Steel, and Rises.

Giant. Epic. -SIZED....I think I made my point. "
No video game stuff for GL?

And here's something Marvel isn't doing an animated movie tie in!

And how about all the pics in the comics from the film right now? Or even better yet how about the fact that in just the trailer are recreations of panel's from the Secret Origin. Meaning that this movie is gonna be a hell of a lot more faithful to the character and the feel of the source material. Unlike Marvel and their BS with that ridiculous shit in X-Men Origins Wolverine and what is likely to be just as terrible X-men First Class.
And oh might I add that the JL show was on at a time when Hal Jordon wasn't a member of the league, or even alive. And that the entire show was done before Geoff took over the GL book. This movie is gonna be awesome, especially in comparison to the X-men stuff that's coming out and you can bank on that.
