Image Comics Presents MORIARTY, The Musical

The comic book about Sherlock Holmes' greatest adversary takes a stab at musical theater.

If you are a comic fan with your finger on the pulse of the industry then you may have already read MORIARTY, a title from Image Comics which has been gradually increasing in popularity. Evidently, the book has done so well with readers that it was announced during Image Expo this weekend that the comic book series would soon be adapted for the stage.

That's right! The comic book, that focuses on Sherlock Holmes' "arch nemesis" will be coming to the stage thanks to the partnership between the series' creator Daniel Corey and composer Raymond Schnurr in an all new musical. In an industry where we are used to seeing comics translated from panel to screen, the idea that they could be brought to musical theater is sort of a breath of fresh air, am I right?

Not only did the series' creator reveal plans for the musical adaptation this weekend, but plenty of information regarding who will be behind the musical was also announced. The musical will be titled 'Moriarty,' after the comic book and will focus on the first story arc of the comic book series. Currently, the book's creator Daniel Corey will be scripting the musical while composer Raymond Schurr writes the music. The two will work together to collaborate on lyrics for the musical's songs. Both are very excited to bring Moriarty from the panels of Image Comics to the stage.

What do you think of musical adaptations of comics in general? Are you looking forward to Moriarty, the musical? Did you enjoy the first story arc?

I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan. S.H. has had been adapted for plays for decades, so a musical is not that crazy an idea, but only about Moriarty? I have no idea if that'll work.

Of course, I haven't read the comic so who knows?

It sounds like a clever idea. Something different for sure and I find it appealing. Im not the lover of all things musical so its hard to say. I feel that there has to be a well thought out story that just fits to music in general in order to make them work. I'd be interested in seeing it, but i haven't even read the comic book yet. Its on a list of stuff to read with in the next year.
