I Want More Than Just Covers, J. Scott Campbell

Has anyone else noticed this?

 Deadpool Variant Cover
When was the last time you guys saw artist J. Scott Campbell do interior art for a comic? Do you remember, because I can't. It seems like forever ago that the artist was consistently writing and penciling for books like Danger Girl, and I often wonder if people miss his work on his creator owned titles. Correct me if I am wrong, but I feel like the last time Campbell worked on penciling the interior art for a comic was
nearly ten years ago. What happened? Recently, he has been doing a lot of work for Marvel comics. He did the cover to Wolverine: Savage, the highly controversial Deadpool variant, and now the upcoming cover for Moon Knight's appearance in the Heroic Age. Have you noticed a change in his books? Are you a fan of Campbell's work and wonder if an when he will ever return to drawing interiors of comic books?

Recently, the artist revamped his website making it easier for fans to keep track of his work, his appearances as well as purchase his original art. To be honest, it is a pretty cool store, although I am unsure of how often it is updated. You can check it out here.

I definitely miss J.Scott Campbell doing interior work.  Every once in a while I'll go back and read his work on Danger Girl and Gen13 just to see his awesome pencils.  Whatever happened to the Spider-man book that he was doing?

Oh god, I love that Moon Knight cover!  ...must... purchase!

I remember he did the covers for the arc where Mary Jane returning in Amazing Spider-man but I thought there was supposed to be a mini released with him doing the pencils and J. Michael Straczynski writing it.  I'm pretty sure that it was announced a few years ago and G-Man may have even asked him about it during one of the comic con videos.

correction:  It was Jeph Loeb writing the book and I just did a quick wikipedia check and they say that during the 2007 Wizard World Convention in Chicago, Campbell said that the book was cancelled.  :(

Probably because it takes him forever and a day to complete an actual comic... if he doesn't apparently lose interest in projects he's working on first and go off and do something else. The last comic he was actually working on, and not just it's covers, (to sucker people into buying the comic) was Wildsiderz, and we never got past ISSUE TWO, for unknown reasons (my guess is that he just got bored with it...), The man's a great artist, I love his style... but he has a terrible work ethic!!

I'm not a fan of his, personally.  He seems (seemed?) to be popular though, so I'd think he wouldn't have trouble finding a job as a regular penciler.  Only thing I can think of that would possibly hold him back, is if he's notorious for missing deadlines.  Maybe if they made him part of a rotating creative team, like they're currently doing with Spider-Man?

I swear. Babs, I could just kiss you!! THANK YOU for writing this. I have been spouting off about this for a long time now. You and I may differ about the kind of things he draws, but it can't be denied that J. Scott Campbell makes dynamic and visually appealing art with tons of personality that can just pop off the page. I think he's also the only comic artist out there that actually draws birthmarks on a woman's body.
I follow Campbell on deviantArt. I can tell you that he almost never updates that.

It's always been a pet peeve of mine with US comics how at time you will get this stunning and dynamic covers done by high class artists from pencil to color, and the interior art be nothing even similar. I always felt cheated. A cover is basically suppose to draw you in and be a sort of promise with the reader. While at times misleading. It's always meant to me to be like a promise to the reader that "this is what you can expect inside" when it came to the art.

I just can't understand why so many of my favorite artists seem content to do only covers. I get that they probably want to have more time for personal projects, but didn't they get into the industry to be story tellers?

I don't midd JSC.  In fact, I don't think he should be allowed to do covers any more.  Make him focus on ONLY doing a while comic.  That way, he might actually get more than one issue every 2-3 years :p

What was so controversial about that Deadpool Variant?? It's just a parody on Ali G.....

I couldn't agree more. I don't know if it is a time issue or he is busy doing other things. I loved Gen 13 and Danger Girl. I am still surprised that Danger Girl hasn't been made into a movie considering it has been out there for a number of years and plays out like a big budget action flick. Last I heard it was going to be a movie then TV show then don't know. The only thing I could consider is that he just doesn't want to do pages, similar to what JMad did. He came back and his art wasn't really well received but that could be part of the fact that Loeb ruined The Ultimates.

He would have been perfect for that upcoming Heralds mini that features many of Marvel's women.

Now that you mention it, I've never seen interior art by J. Scott Campbell. I remember first seeing his work when he was doing the cover art for amazing spider-man  when John Romita Jr was doing the interior art. His sketch work was pretty awesome. ISo, I too would like to see more of his work in the near future.

@Cpt. Quor:
I believe the controversy was based upon the whole Blackest Night cover returns. I think it was that listed J. Scott Campbell cover of Deadpool in this article that was promised to stores that would sent them of 'covers' from Blackest Night then hadn't sold.

Not something I was pleased to hear. As a policy I'm against the purposeful damaging of any book. Whether I agree with it or not. The written word should be treated with more respect.

This is similar to Alex Ross as well little bit. He still does interior artwork , but not as much as he use to in the early days. I would like to see J. Scott do some more interior art too. I WOULD like and I think many of us here feel the same , see him return to Danger Girl. Why he stopped ? I don't know , but he needs to return with DG & do some more stuff & not just do cover work.

Well, if the public wants JSC to do more interior work then Marvel or whoever he is working for at the time must pay the piper without costing the public money, as far as rising the prices of comic books. This is where Disney comes in. I am a big fan of people like JSC  and Mcfarlane, artists how are more known for there cover art tease than actual interior. When the customer picks up the latest issue of Spiderman or Deadpool and sees JSC artwork of the cover automatically one assumes the he also did the comic book itself and then you open and noticed that the artwork is done by somebody else. Somebody else not as talented. Big let down. So if the public wants more then so does JSC. Is it right? NO. But that's just business.

I have to agree. What's up with this great artist? His website did mention a large format Spiderman project. But how the hell does this guy make a living? Cover art can't be paying the rent alone. We should start a Campbell "return to a monthly" Campaign!

wait...  am i wrong to assume Moon Knight entering the Heroic Age is kinda a spoiler that he may in fact be a Secret Avenger???

Posted by sora_thekey

I folow him on DeviantArt but he never updates...
Same thing for twitter...

To be honset never have I seen a comic with JSC interior....
So I can't miss what I've never seen

@danhimself:
You can't really rely on Wikipedia for this kind of information.
Posted by danhimself
@BaronVonDredd:  usually I would agree but it's been 2 years since the project was supposed to have been released and Jeph Loeb is currently working on other titles so I'm guessing that information is true

@strangeling: I'm not a fan either. I hope he isn't a main stay on the Moonknight book cause he can't hold a candle to Leinil's covers so far. I hope Leinil stays on the book when it goes into the Heroic Age.

Hell, yes - I agree. I need to get that.

Sweet art but I can dig somebody who makes a reputation for himself for exclusively covers.
Posted by grifter78

No, I definitely noticed he'd only been doing covers for the past few years.  I guess he makes enough from them to support himself.  I miss his interiors too but I think he let his "superstar status" get to his head a long time ago.

Actually, for me, it's Leinil Francis Yu, (I know about UCA2), and David Finch.

busy guy, though its the case with a few cover artists whereas they dont do interiors that often.

Posted by madthoughts

He doesn't get do monthlies cause he can't "do" monthlies right?
Wasn't his work always late?

Posted by Jynxnet

I for one love his work, I started being a fan when Danger Girl came out, but I didn't follow comic creators, just the comics themselves. I remember being disappointed when his work fell off my radar. I guess I know part of the reason why now.

I have really enjoyed his art in the past but frankly it seems right now he is either too busy with other business or is no longer capable of maintaining  a monthly schedule so doing covers is able to do right now.
