How Strong Is Wonder Woman Now?

Is she the most powerful member of the current Justice League? What are the extent of her powers?

It's hard to believe we are already through issue #15 of WONDER WOMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE. In over a year we've seen many shifts in Wonder Woman's powers, but it is still unclear what the full extent of her power set really is. Is she stronger than Superman? Do her bracelets give her the ability to go into a sort of "berzerker rage"? Can she draw swords from her bracelets, or was that just a one time thing? We look at her appearances in JUSTICE LEAGUE and in WONDER WOMAN to try and identify just how powerful her character is.

WONDER WOMAN #8
WONDER WOMAN #8

We first saw the extent of Diana's powers in issue #8 of WONDER WOMAN where she meets Hephaestus. In the issue's first scene Diana chooses a quote "archaic" costume before she steps into battle to face off against Hades. The issue opens with Wonder Woman on Mt. Etna where she chooses a sword, a dagger and a shield to take with her into the fight. In this issue we see the character put up a fight against various undead adversaries, losing her weapons along the way. In the final moment of battle, Wonder Woman lifts her silver cuffs to deflect a bullet, but finds it goes right through the metal. Are her bracelets weak? At this point in her series she's certainly engaged in plenty of fights, but the extent of her power is still unclear to readers. It is not until her appearance in WONDER WOMAN #12 that we are given more insight into the full extent of her powers and where they stem from.

WONDER WOMAN #12
WONDER WOMAN #12

If you've ever read a comic where Wolverine goes into "berzerker rage," then you might have seen the similarities between that and what Wonder Woman was like in issue #12 of her series. In this issue, Diana removes her bracelets before engaging in a fight with a God, and she becomes visibly more intense and ruthless as a hand-to-hand combatant. Prior to the New 52 continuity it was thought that Wonder Woman's bracelets are what gave her some of her exceptional power. However in this issue she explains in a moment before engaging in battle that the bracelets are what protected her opponent from her intense power.

WONDER WOMAN #0
WONDER WOMAN #0

The zero issue revealed a lot about Wonder Woman. One, that she was one of the Amazon's better warriors and that she was part God and Zeus' daughter. But one of the most important aspects of this issue came when it was revealed that Diana would seek the tutelage of the God of War in secret, and that his guidance was what gave her a certain edge over her opponents. So was it Ares' teaching that gave Wonder Woman such incredible power? It is only in the 12th issue of her series that we've seen her exhibit such intensity.

WONDER WOMAN #15
WONDER WOMAN #15
WONDER WOMAN #15
WONDER WOMAN #15

The most recent issue of WONDER WOMAN shows yet another addition to the character's power. In this issue Diana is set to go up against Orion in a fight, and she draws two swords from her magic bracelets. So what does this mean? Can Diana conjure any type of weapon from her bracelets, or just those swords?

WONDER WOMAN #15
WONDER WOMAN #15

This does explain more about her appearances in JUSTICE LEAGUE where she uses a sword, but it can never be found on the hilt of her belt. So if you've wondered why that is, perhaps it is because she draws them from the magic of her bracelets. While we are assuming that these are "magic bracelets," it does seem likely. They appear and disappear at her will. Yet, how strong are they? If these are the same swords that helped defeat Darkseid in issue #6 of JUSTICE LEAGUE then we know that they are pretty strong.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #3
JUSTICE LEAGUE #3

What do you think, though? Would you like to see the creative teams behind these books explain the full extent of Diana's powers a bit further? Now that she is equipped with magical swords that she is able to conjure from her magical bracelets, does it make her the strongest member of the Justice League? Does her magic make her stronger than Superman?

In my opinion, since Diana is the daughter of Zeus, I always thought she'd be near the same level of power as Superman, especially in physical strenght. Remember that Superman and Wonder Woman together carried a falling aircraft carrier when Atlantis flooded Metropolis;

However, in Superman #19, Wonder Woman fights Supergirl and clearly states that they are both equal in strength and speed, but that Wonder Woman is way more experienced. I find it terribly hard to believe that Supergirl has the power level of Wonder Woman, especially when Wonder Woman has kicked Superman's ass.

@greg_gamer: It is understandable that Kryptonians are as powerful as WW, after all DC will not let other characters other than Batman out shine their favourite son and his family. Supergirl has the potential to be as powerful as Kal-El (I guess). But she will never match to Diana's skills (I hope).

I guess we will find out soon enough, as I suspect Faora and WW are going to lock horns in the next issue of Superman/Wonder Woman....(or the one after)...

That is one of the impressive moments in TOA. :D

I believe there's the answer already. :) She made a statement into considering that Supergirl and her has an equal feats, but due to Wonder Woman being way more experienced she knew that it is her unique advantage to Supergirl.

Well she's stronger than Kara. Stronger than her sisters. Though as usual, not stronger than Clark.

New 52 WW easily defeated New 52 Supergirl while holding back. She is obviously more powerful than supergirl by a considerable margin.

Of course. WW is, no doubt in that tbh.

She is pretty damn strong. I thought it was cool how she swatted Aquaman, Shazam, Patient Zero, etc. away like they were nothing in a recent Justice League issue.

@somayareece: That feat would have been impressive had they not been infected with the Amazo virus and been in a weakened state. Which sucks because I was really looking forward to seeing WW show some of her true strength.

They were fully-powered, it's just that the virus that was controlling them didn't operate their powers quite as well. I wouldn't want Wonder Woman, or Superman for that matter, to single handedly defeat her teammates unless there's something wrong with them.

@foamborn: Hmm, I could have sworn a page or two before it had mentioned that they weren't at full strength. I'll have to re-read it once I get home. I would love to be wrong.

The virus WAS blocking their powers but clearly it's no longer doing that. I suppose it depends on how long it takes for their powers to return to full capacity, however judging by how fast the Flash was punching Wonder Woman I'd say they seemed replenished

Not much actually until #39. The Amazo Virus that Lex designed to take away Superman's powers was released upon Metropolis striking millions of civilians, it gave them mutations, it sent the Justice League into a coma save Superman and Wonder Woman that were immune and Batman because he's Batman. Wonder Woman briefly fought Patient Zero who copied Superman's abilities, then she took on the whole league, plus Patient Zero and a bunch of other people. She also befriended Captain Cold which I thought was totally cute

Aye it didn't work, Superman's immune system fought off the Virus with antibodies.

I would be hesitant to even consider the original golden age comics in terms of defining abilities, since those underwent change as well. If there's no status quo, and numbers can be changed or made up by the whim of the author, then what's the point in discussing or caring about any of this? Take Rogue of Marvel as a case in point: Her strength rating was a 4 at one point, and now it's a 7. Base human strength is given as a 2. Spiderman is a 4, although it should be a 3. We know Rogue can punch down heavy steel doors, something Spiderman cannot do, so she should realistically be a 5. Wonder Woman would be similar to Rogue in terms of physical strength, so she should also be somewhere in the 5 range. Both of them are far from indestructible, although incredibly resilient to physical damage and temperature, etc. Superman should realistically be considered a 6 in strength, with 7 being reserved for more powerful and omnipotent beings. The scale 1-7 is actually pretty limited in being able to accurately differentiate between many different levels of ability, physical or otherwise. However, I don't feel the authors always treat their characters with a suitable degree of realism (in terms of the fantasy world they depict). Much like how many Anime characters (DBZ) have too much of a sliding nature to their abilities, where at a certain point, it seems as if there's almost no limit, which I find entirely unrealistic.

That's the problem with a lot of this and why I have some hangups with super powered characters on both Marvel and DC side. The rules are made too flexible and often changed to suit a whim. Wonder Woman is more akin to Red Sonja, in which she's an exceptional human who is given her powers by one or more gods/goddesses of that universe. I hardly think of her as any sort of deity or even half goddess, and I don't really care what the 'official' comics and stories say. It's a similar treatment in how I reject certain elements and events in the Star Wars universe, be they prequels or novels, and only accept things that are in line with my version of what is canon and what makes sense in my mind.

In a round-about way I guess what I'm saying is that when it comes to fantasy, a lot of, if not all of it, is purely subjective, on both the authors and everyone else. Saying "I hope this or that character gets power x or y soon", or "according to this source x character is more powerful than y character" is laughable to me, because it can escalate perpetually until virtually every character is practically a god in their own right, which is dumb. For characters to be relatable, fiction or otherwise, they need to have some sort of grounding in reality and thereby limitations. Even many TOS and TNG beings, like Q, had limitations, despite being god-like compared to humans. This made such beings more believable and realistic (i.e. relatable). Marvel and DC heroes seem to have been taking a progressive dive off the deep end in terms of being realistic, if not already so from the get-go.

My 2 dollars worth.

@agent41: That really is bad and people need to be more knowledgeable on these characters. I just seen a thread where some people think Naruto can beat Supergirl.

@agent41: Some people usually assume a lot of female characters in that tier are are automatically weak and tend to lowball them. Wonder Woman is definitely in the top 20 when it come to powerhouses.
