How Strong Is Wonder Woman Now?

Is she the most powerful member of the current Justice League? What are the extent of her powers?

It's hard to believe we are already through issue #15 of WONDER WOMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE. In over a year we've seen many shifts in Wonder Woman's powers, but it is still unclear what the full extent of her power set really is. Is she stronger than Superman? Do her bracelets give her the ability to go into a sort of "berzerker rage"? Can she draw swords from her bracelets, or was that just a one time thing? We look at her appearances in JUSTICE LEAGUE and in WONDER WOMAN to try and identify just how powerful her character is.

WONDER WOMAN #8
WONDER WOMAN #8

We first saw the extent of Diana's powers in issue #8 of WONDER WOMAN where she meets Hephaestus. In the issue's first scene Diana chooses a quote "archaic" costume before she steps into battle to face off against Hades. The issue opens with Wonder Woman on Mt. Etna where she chooses a sword, a dagger and a shield to take with her into the fight. In this issue we see the character put up a fight against various undead adversaries, losing her weapons along the way. In the final moment of battle, Wonder Woman lifts her silver cuffs to deflect a bullet, but finds it goes right through the metal. Are her bracelets weak? At this point in her series she's certainly engaged in plenty of fights, but the extent of her power is still unclear to readers. It is not until her appearance in WONDER WOMAN #12 that we are given more insight into the full extent of her powers and where they stem from.

WONDER WOMAN #12
WONDER WOMAN #12

If you've ever read a comic where Wolverine goes into "berzerker rage," then you might have seen the similarities between that and what Wonder Woman was like in issue #12 of her series. In this issue, Diana removes her bracelets before engaging in a fight with a God, and she becomes visibly more intense and ruthless as a hand-to-hand combatant. Prior to the New 52 continuity it was thought that Wonder Woman's bracelets are what gave her some of her exceptional power. However in this issue she explains in a moment before engaging in battle that the bracelets are what protected her opponent from her intense power.

WONDER WOMAN #0
WONDER WOMAN #0

The zero issue revealed a lot about Wonder Woman. One, that she was one of the Amazon's better warriors and that she was part God and Zeus' daughter. But one of the most important aspects of this issue came when it was revealed that Diana would seek the tutelage of the God of War in secret, and that his guidance was what gave her a certain edge over her opponents. So was it Ares' teaching that gave Wonder Woman such incredible power? It is only in the 12th issue of her series that we've seen her exhibit such intensity.

WONDER WOMAN #15
WONDER WOMAN #15
WONDER WOMAN #15
WONDER WOMAN #15

The most recent issue of WONDER WOMAN shows yet another addition to the character's power. In this issue Diana is set to go up against Orion in a fight, and she draws two swords from her magic bracelets. So what does this mean? Can Diana conjure any type of weapon from her bracelets, or just those swords?

WONDER WOMAN #15
WONDER WOMAN #15

This does explain more about her appearances in JUSTICE LEAGUE where she uses a sword, but it can never be found on the hilt of her belt. So if you've wondered why that is, perhaps it is because she draws them from the magic of her bracelets. While we are assuming that these are "magic bracelets," it does seem likely. They appear and disappear at her will. Yet, how strong are they? If these are the same swords that helped defeat Darkseid in issue #6 of JUSTICE LEAGUE then we know that they are pretty strong.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #3
JUSTICE LEAGUE #3

What do you think, though? Would you like to see the creative teams behind these books explain the full extent of Diana's powers a bit further? Now that she is equipped with magical swords that she is able to conjure from her magical bracelets, does it make her the strongest member of the Justice League? Does her magic make her stronger than Superman?

I think they way she's written in her book is as the Strongest hero on earth. But I dont see that in the other books. I wish she would go "bad" for a bit just to show readers that she can kick superman or batman's butt. She is intelligent too and i wish they'd play that up more too. I think Magic is a pretty handy power.

I get the impression without her bracelets she may be more powerful than Superman. But it remains to be seen. She's is a better fighter for certain.

She is pretty kick ass now, and to think I used to not like her at all...

But man, the outfit she wore when she went after Hades, the 'archaic' legionnaire style one shown in the first screen, now that's a great outfit. Even the one her counterpart wore in the Earth 2 1st issue was great. I'd love to see her wear one of these on a more permanent basis. It makes a lot of sense, since she is a warrior after all, and it looks so much better than her current one and even the long pants version from just before New 52.

Seeing how Superman is weak to magic, WW magic would definitely give her the upper hand if they ever fought. I'd say Wonder Woman and Superman are pretty even and would probably kill each other if they decided to take off the security measures and just go all out. The answer I wanna know is can she beat Martian Manhunter if she took the bracelets off? Didn't he beat all of the league when they fought?

I'd prefer the JL writing team and the WW writing team to work on the same 'level' before they start defining her power. Since it still appears very much like we have two Wonder Women in the DCNU atm.

Ex. JL seems utterly amazed that she can remain unbothered by wearing glasses...while the one in WW apparently couldn't care less about hiding who she is (as seen in 4 and 5).

It seems like the New 52's character's powers are becoming more interesting with many different applications. Especially in Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and the Flash. They're stronger but their powers are also more creative so I really like it. I just wish these powers would be shown and incorporated more in the Justice League book as well.

I feel the Justice Leagues powers all reflect Superman's overall. Supes clearly outmatches them all, but Batman beats him in intelligence and willpower, Flash in Speed, Green Lantern in secondary powers (constructs, communications, space travel etc. > super hearing, heat vision, x-ray vision etc.), Aquaman in aquatic matters, leadership ability (as a king) and Bad-assery, Wonder Woman in combat, and I assume Shazzam when he joins in magical ability. Yes, I didn't include Cyborg, because Geoff Johns can't even remember to include him half the time.

@Ganthetsward20: Beating Batman isn't really an indicator of might. Everyone, except Cyborg, probably could do that effortlessly. She already fought all of them when Steve got kidnapped and destroyed Hal's constructs, tagged Barry and drew blood from Superman.

@xxxddd: Wrong, Helspot, Martian, H'El are three people already proven to be more powerful that Superman.

@Superguy1591: For real? What issue? I haven't been reading them all, it really bugged me that everyone isn't really the same as in their respective books, so i've been following them in their each series. But the argument everyone brings up is that batman will always win when he's vs another person.

Actually we really don't know who the strongest is considering how Helspont treated Clark in the Superman annual.

I totally agree now that she's a demi-god that puts her on the level of Hercules or even more. The whole upgrade with her bracelets is cool. If you read JL #15 she seems to be just as fast as Clark and she and Clark held up an aircraft carrier. All in all, R.E.S.P.E.C.T to Diana and that's all I got to say about that.

The bracelets reminded me of Dragonball Z's weighted 'training' clothes! XD Sorry, sorry, but it so did! Anyway, I don't think it reminded me of a berserker rage at all. She did grow way more powerful, but you can't say she was out of control, she did thoroughly stomp Artemis though! The bracers certainly hold back her already considerable strength. Consider the images below:

@CircularLogic: This is very wrong, everyone seems to have a role on the team...sans Batman who might just be here for popularity. Why Geoff Johns has him on the team has not yet being revealed.

1.) Superman is the powerhouse.

2.) Diana is the best fighter.

3.) Flash is the speed guy.

4.) Green Lantern is the guy with the most will, hence why he's the Green Lantern.

5.) Cyborg is the brain/tech guy since he's the JL computer and all.

6.) Aquaman looks to be the better leader of the group.

7.) Batman is the best tactician.

That's the roles of the JL. Batman is no longer the smartest or the one with the most will just because he's Batman.

@xxxddd: Again, Helspont, H'el and Martian have all being proven more powerful than Superman.

Until Wonder Woman can boast this as a feat of hers, then she simply isn't on Superman's level of strength yet. The swords and magic from her bracelets just make her fighting ability all the better in midst of combat.

@RedheadedAtrocitus: That is courtesy of Lobdell force.

It's why I say Diana isn't as strong as Clark.

@Superguy1591: Thor is more powerful than Hulk, does that automatically mean Thor is stronger than the Hulk? No.

He is more powerful due to his hammer's abilities, which have nothing to do with his innate strength.

@The Stegman: Let Lobdell write her and you'll see some ludicrous feats.

@RedheadedAtrocitus: This is the problem with Superman, writers keep making him a god and having him fight overpowered aliens instead of coming up with good stories, most of the good Superman stuff are what ifs and alternate universes, but Batman has a number of great stores.

I believe her magic has ALWAYS made her his equal. Not just with these weird 52 changes. Superman is all power and clearly makes quite a few of his strengths known whereas Diana is a bit more subtle about her power. She drags out new abilities as needed. Diana also seems to be able to obtain new abilities from the gods making her stronger, whereas Clark simply has what he has..I think Superboy will surpass him one day.

Don't want to sound like an ass, but the grammar in this article could use a little work :/ God, with a capital G, refers to the man from the bible, while god, with lowercase g, refers to a deity. So you can't say God of War. Also I don't know if Babs purposely spelled berserker with a z on purpose, but for some reason that irked me. However, with my personal OCD aside, I would say it's very hard to adequately define Wonder Woman. It does indeed feel like the Wonder Woman from her own series and the one from Justice League are two characters. So I can't say for sure how strong Wonder Woman is now in the New 52.

Since Superman does not seem to know kung fu and does not use any kryptonian weapons or science, I would assume Wonder Woman can easily beat up Superman. I assume Faora Hu Ul can also easily beat up Superman. That Superman or Wonder Woman can juggle planets is irrelevant since such outrageous and silly power levels are rarely used in the stories. If you look at the current Superman titles, in every Superman story, Superman is getting thrown around by puny villains who can't juggle planets.

@Ganthetsward20: Justice League #11

@xxxddd: I'm still confused how Martian kicking the entire league's buttocks in a one on seven fight doesn't prove he's more powerful. I'm also confused as to why Helspont backhanding Supes to the moon isn't enough of an indication for you. And, last, but not least, H'El has all of Superman's powers and then some, with some unknown powers to boot.

My first exposure to Superman vs Wonder Woman was in the 1970s jla 143. Superman had to fight Wonder Woman who was under the mental control of Construct. Superman had a hard time beating Wonder Woman so some persons being able to juggle planets is just irrelevant bec such power levels are not used in most stories. 1970s Jla 140-141 also had Hal Jordan being accused by the Manhunters of blowing up a planet by accident and this type of outrageous power level is rarely used in stories since even Hal Jordan is easily beaten by puny villains in most stories.

A non starter argument. Wonder Woman will be as powerful as the writer needs her to be for the intended story.

Superman regularly goes back and forth in power and ability. This is nothing new.

@Outside_85: The characterization in JL 15 and her solo about Wonder Woman not caring about a secret identity is actually decently consistent. The only reason she even considered disguising herself was because Clark asked her to. She didnt care about going unbothered otherwise.

I don't see any evidence that she is stronger than Superman but she is probably close. I imagine Shazam is Supes's equal in strength among JL teammates but that's without proof. And Martian Manhunter is perhaps the most powerful overall.

Most stories don't require characters who can juggle planets so in most stories, Superman, Wonder Woman and Hal Jordan are all portrayed as quite weak and easily thrown around by puny villains. I don't believe any of them are holding back in powers in most of the stories since in every story, lives are at stake if the heroes lose to the villains.
