How Phil Hester Will Change Wonder Woman [Interview]

"Wonder Woman will change very soon..."

Writer J. Michael Straczynski's Wonder Woman run has received mixed reviews since it's launch with issue #601. With a new costume and a whole new identity, the famous heroine was virtually changed overnight. Now, equipped with JMS's Wonder Woman script, Phil Hester has taken on the writing responsibilities for the Amazon Princess's ongoing book. The big question is, where will Phil Hester take the Wonder Woman story? Will he bring back the famous costume? Will we see a love interest? And most importantly, will Wonder Woman re-discover her true identity? We caught up with the writer (who happens to be one of my personal favorites) to pick his brain about his plans for the Wonder Woman story.

Comic Vine: What is it like taking on JMS's Wonder Woman script?

Phil Hester: It's a thrill, of course. Wonder Woman is one of those icons I always daydreamed about writing, but never thought it possible. I feel lucky, to be honest. I also have a really tough act to follow. What JMS has planned for Diana is very ambitious. I'm not sure I have the chops to pull off what he would have, but I'm giving it my full effort.

CV: How much of his outline are you using to tell the story, and how much of the story is your idea? How will you transition the current story/script into your own?

PH: It's very fluid. There are some elements of JMS' outline that are very detailed and long range in nature, while others are more spontaneous and fun. JMS left me notes which spell out very specific goals and benchmarks for the story, but leave me a lot of discretion in how we reach them. I've been able to introduce characters, revamp old ones, even kill a few. As long as I get to the climax JMS sketched out I'm allowed to improvise... and I am!

Some issues are 80/20 JMS/ Hester, others the opposite. Maybe we can make it a contest to guess which ones. The prize? A hearty handshake.

CV: Where do you see yourself taking the character?

PH: That's up to the readers. If they like my take, I may get to stick around a while. If so, I plan on making more Wonder Woman stories that are just straight up adventure stories. I think stories often eat their own tail and become too insular. Look at the Superman movies. You know why the first Superman movie worked so well? Because we got to see Superman lift that school bus up over the edge of the bridge, help that kitty, and catch that helicopter. We got to see Superman being Superman, not just in conflict with a villain, so when that conflict came we really cared.

I'd like to do stories that show what Wonder Woman means to the world at large, not just her fellow heroes and villains. I want to reinforce her heroism, her nobility. Of course, I hope to shepherd her through some growth as a character, but first and foremost, I want to tell cool stories. Cool stories become canon by default. Do a good job, write a memorable story, and that becomes what readers remember.

CV: JMS introduced a new Wonder Woman to readers in issue #601, so how long will the re-imagining of this character last?

== TEASER ==

PH: That's almost impossible to answer without tipping my hand. The new Wonder Woman will change both very soon... and never.

CV: What is it like to write Wonder Woman in her ongoing series? Is it difficult or easy to write an iconic character?

PH: I thought it would be hard. I thought I would freeze. Thankfully, my excitement overrode my stage fright and I began to dream about Diana. That's always a good sign I'm on the right track. When I can't keep a character out of my head, writing them becomes easy.

I do feel a certain sense of responsibility to Diana's long time readers. I want to show them I respect her past while also taking her into the future. That isn't always easy. These changes can sometimes seem capricious, but I'm going to do my best to do the legwork necessary to make whatever changes I execute seem credible and, most importantly, in the best interest of the book. We can't just stand still and become a nostalgia service. We have to break new ground, and I think Wonder Woman is going to make a fantastic pioneer into that undiscovered country.

CV: Of all of Wonder Woman's biggest moments in her character's history, which is your favorite and why?

PH: I think her old school origin story is just fantastic. The pace is so breakneck, and the concepts so unabashedly peculiar, that I challenge anyone not to fall in love with it. Watching her combination of naiveté and resolve run headfirst into the absurdity of modern world is delightful. I'd love to portray her as that kind of alien again, not to mock her, but as a commentary on the mess we've made of civilization. Her perspective should always be startling to our messed up sensibilities.

Plus the George Perez run. Love all that stuff.

CV: Do you see yourself delving into Wonder Woman's love life?

PH: If I'm here long enough, most definitely.

CV: Who do you see as her primary nemesis?

PH: For this run... I can't say. For any future stories; I'd love to go on a romp through her rogue's gallery. I mean I'd be compared to Grant Morrison if I could make a villain like The Blue Snowman genuinely menacing.

Not to get too pretentious, but her biggest nemesis will always be herself. She has great power at her fingertips, and a great thirst to administer justice. Tempering that destructive capability with her innate sense of mercy will be a constant conflict for her. How she overcomes that, or at least deals with it, will be the crux more than a few stories.

CV: And I have to ask, will she be keeping the new outfit?

PH: And I have to not answer. Sorry. That's above my pay grade.

Yeah, I can see that as well, but her outfit is so iconic that I don't see her not going back to it at some point. It might be years(in our real world) before it happens, so like 20 something odd issues, maybe? It's like Spiderman and his many customes and his inevetable return to his old get up.
Or like some have posted, she would mostly return to her old custome and keep some of her new stuff.
We shall see.

Good points in the recent Wonder Woman videos but.... we do not even have a quest of Wonder Woman at Comicvine so.....  I would like to start at home first.

I would like to see a TV show with her in it. Bad news she got cancelled even before the show start. She deserves better, she is fun and interesting character.

The biggest issue has always been the costume (POST CRISIS) Her classic costume originally was a simple marketing stunt to sell comics during World War 2 (1940's) PEREZ did a fine job to reintroduce Wonder Woman to the modern world. He even changed her costume for her POST crisis debut but of course it was changed back simply because of OUT side marketing pressure.

If you ever want a TV show or a MOVIE.... or if you just want Wonder Woman to be taken seriously the classic costume must DIE...I know its almost never done but Wonder Woman needs to be that acception. Remember, her classic costume was a cut and paste marketing stunt that lasted 70 years (Wonder Woman's character has the lamest excuse in comic book history for wearing the classic costume. She is the only superhero in the DC universe who did not get to pick or design her own uniform!)..... It is only ICONIC because its become a JOKE open to limitless parody  and sexual inuendos

Once the Costume changes 90% of the other problems, such as her rogues gallery, story issues etc will be fixed automatically since Writers Won't be half chuckling to themselves while they try to write stories knowing Wonder Woman is wearing an obvious American Flag Styled Bathing suit with absolutly no practical application in DC comic Wonder Woman canon universe.

Hopefully The costume will never change!

Love this run, both JMS and Hester are giving WW a truly fresh storyline, which hasn't happened in DECADES!  Kudos!  Love the new costume too.  I do hope WW gets her origin back--raised on Themyscira, Steve crash lands on island, Diana takes him back to man's world and becomes ambassador.  But, please no more Miss America swimsuit costume ever again!  This is the new millennium. Keep up the great work!

COME ON! Look how AWESOME her new costume is compared to the REST of the DC universe..... I just can't see how anybody can like the classic costume better!

I am thinking they will keep the costume as the major change. It makes so much more sense on all levels.

I'm still mostly sure they're going to return Wonder Woman back to her class outfit, but it wouldn't be the first time a comic book character got their costume permanently destroyed on a publisher's whim.  I just don't understand why it's necessary to do that.  Wonder Woman has had her classic outfit for decades with only minor alterations along the way.  And it worked just fine as she has a huge fan-base.  You want a character like Wonder Woman wearing tight leather pants and a halter top, fine.  But create a NEW character.  Why do people feel the need to step on the toes of others to get their way?  Create a new amazonian character with this new outfit, and everybody can get their way.

Use Marvel's Ultimate universe as an example.  Imagine the uproar that would have been caused if the mainstream universe had instead been permanently replaced by these Ultimate creations, rather than coexisting with them.  That's what is happening here.  Rather than creating an "Ultimate" Wonder Woman as a separate comic to satisfy the readers who are afraid of bare skin, they're instead walking all over existing fans and replacing their beloved character with something completely different.

Normally I would never suggest a costume change but Wonder Woman's costume makes no SENSE... and is actually a contradiction of her character. If it simply resembled a Bathing suit then most of us that want it changed would have no case for a change..... But Wonder Woman's costume is unfortunately based on an American FLAG  yet her character has really no connection to it. She needs to be distanced from the AMERICAN concept in order for her stories to be taken a little more seriously.

Her original costume was simply a MARKETING tactic from World War 2 era to sell comics. Even her original 1942 BACK story had an extremely weak explanation for her wearing it.

Every other character who has had a costume change then reverted back..... had really NO big issue with there original costume's in the first place since they related directly to there characters.
 Wonder Woman is the acception

I mean Imagine THOR's father ODIN originally gave him a costume that was modeled after an American FLAG and told him to go to America and live among humans? and the only reason given was because Thor once fought in World War 2 so now he must wear the costume forever? How LAME would that be.

Here is the orignal SCAN from Sensation comics #8 Wonder Woman's first apperence in a comic accepting her new "COSTUME" her mother calls it.

After 70 years of wearing it we still really have no clue as to why her mom made her wear an American flag..... and its a HUGE plot hole to deal with and probably the main reason why we dont have a Movie featuring her yet.

" Please god let the new outfit last for long while, I'm tired of seeing the metal bikini. If people want WW to be taken seriously make her a serious character both inside and OUT "

I agree; I think the jacket can be replaced with a shortened cloak, though. I'm thinking of a design similar to Jason's from the "Rise of the Argonauts" video game (Link to example:  http://guidesmedia.ign.com/guides/901023/jolie_molie/splash_021.jpg).

Her bio needs to be updated, as well - instead of an enchanted island of Amazons, what about a sub-culture of women who have divinity in their blood but live amongst the population like minority communities even though they are demigods? I see a lot of potential in her character, but they need to marry the Greek mythology to the modern world in a better way than they have before and show some form of evolution.

@WDW: I would love to see someone twist that costume origin onto its head. Perhaps WW's mother and Americas military-industrial complex hatched a scheme to use WW to help establish Americas super power status. Then the USSR was the counter power that failed. Diana learns the truth and flips out on Obama and the Council on Foreign Relations. Max Lord style.
Diana: "Clark stop being such an IDIOT. They've done the same to you. Dummy."
Clark:"...oh."
