How Long Will Flash Thompson Be Venom?

Will he give up the symbiote before it permanently bonds with him?

It's official, Flash Thompson is now the new Venom. The identity of who would be the new government-controlled Venom was meant to be kept a secret until last week's Amazing Spider-Man #654 but was accidentally leaked out beforehand. I've already stated why I believe Flash Thompson is a good choice and deserves to be the new Venom (for now). Eddie Brock fans might not be thrilled with Marvel's decision to join Flash and the symbiote but how long will this relationship last?

In Flash's debut as Venom, we learn why the government chose him as the candidate for Project Rebirth 2.0. We see what they have planned for Flash as Venom and the new things he will be able to do. From everything we know about Venom, it's clear that Flash can't be Venom for too long without the suit permanently bonding with him. This is not something the government wants. The question is, how long can Flash be Venom before the threat of a permanent bonding takes place?
 == TEASER ==

Luckily the government is on top of the threat of permanent bonding. After Flash goes through an extensive test run, he's told that he'll be able to go on probably twenty missions. After that, someone else would take his place.

With the debut of a new series coming up, how long before those twenty missions come and go? From Marvel's standpoint, I can't see them wanting to replace Flash any time soon unless readers are really against it. Flash was a good choice due to his past connection with Spider-Man and simply because we know who he is. No one will want some random government-appointed soldier to take his place next. But twenty missions could easily fill two years' worth of comics unless this new Venom starts making guest appearances in other comics as well (and I'm sure you can imagine how likely that is).

I've stated before that I believe someday in the far off future Eddie Brock and/or writers will find a way for his return to Venom. For now, we're going to see this new commando Venom in action.

The more Flash wears the suit, the risk of becoming addicted to it increases. He said he's fine with the twenty mission limit but he's already expressed how much wearing the suit means to him. When he first discovered he could use the suit to walk, he let out a big "YES!" After a 48 hour test run, he was told the he had to remove the suit but he was clearly ready and willing for more. Flash wants to serve his country and has the chance to walk and have Spider-Man's powers. When his tour of duty is over, I just don't see him giving it up easily.

Either the writers will have to come up with another solution or we just might see that permanent bonding happening. The success of Flash as Venom will obviously dictate how long he wears the suit. If a permanent bonding does happen, that's always something that could be dealt with later. But if fan reaction is high, it would be a daring and unexpected move to yank out Flash and have him replaced. No one really wants a predictable comic after all.

Should we start making our predictions now? How long will Flash last as Venom before he's removed or a permanent bonding happens? How long will he be able to control the suit or will we see Flash develop a hunger for people's brains? What I'm really curious about is will Flash tell Spidey right away who he is and if so, what will his reaction be?

SO Flash Tompson is the newest venom?!
Posted by ComicMan24

I think that something will happen and things will change especially if the book is successful.

I'm going to say that it will be around a year or so, maybe until next year's big MARVEL event?  I'd like to see this one go and Mac Gargan went a whole lot longer than I expect as Venom.

Wow, Brock hasn't been Venom since MARVEL Knights Spider-Man (which was an amazing run and I wish that team would get back together for another MK Spider-Man)....yeah, I am going to predict Brock will be back as Venom in less than 2 years.  Maybe there will be some big Anti-Venom battle or something.

Yep, pretty sweet isn't it :) I think it's a good match.

Realistically, Flash will be Venom as long as the fans respond positively.  It seems that this '20 missions' limitation is there as a get-out clause in case this new Venom hits rock bottom.  Not a bad tactic, really:

If Flash Venom is popular enough then he'll somehow run off & spend more bonding time with the symbiote (or the symbiote will refuse to be separated from him before the 20 missions is up); or

If everyone hates Flash as Venom, the government will pull the plug before they've 'bonded'.

I don't think it is going to last that long.... but I guess it could.

Venom-Flash is gonna be the cat's meow. Step One-Black Ops missions. Step Two-replace that Captain America wannabe Bucky as an Avenger.

I loved that little preview I already like him better than all previous symbiotes I hate symbiotes  so that is not saying much but still awesome.

I'm actually nuetral with this idea. Makes sense and it's interesting. Flash always looked up to Spidey... now he has a symbiote that HATES Spidey.

Love it so much.

I don't mind him actually..

I mean, I would love to see Eddie back as Venom but Flash is cool for now

It looks like the Spider-man venom :)

Is not like the last venom

Gargan Venom was a disaster in the eyes of venom fans

This is what's going to be happen, 1 mssion for each issue. So, that's 20 issues.
Sorted! lol

As much as I don't care for Spider-man comics and the way they have been handled. Interesting they are actually taking Venom into a drastically different direction. I just wonder how long it will stick. That's the important part and the issue Marvel has a problem with. We all know something will eventually go wrong, but will it be a bad or good thing? It would be boring if everything went according to plan.

It's just confusing why they would give a suit that bonds with a user if they don't want it to bond? Seems counter-intuitive. I just hope they aren't going to start playing musical chairs with the symbiote.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.... LAME!!!!!!

Because a temporary bond can give them a makeshift super soldier, and a permanent bond gives them a lunatic.

As long as it takes for people to hate him....

@reaper2923: I see what you did there. lol.

@reaper2923:
Totally agree.
Ive read the preview but it was boring in my opinion.
If you want to read about a symbiote super agent go read haunt instead you'll get a decent story/awesome characters/good story and the agent actually kills the ''terrorists'' brutally instead of knocking them out.

I will definatly not get this.

The future of Venom is looking good from my perspective. Although I won't be collecting this series (or perhaps any others due to my comic books not having come yet damn you Forbidden Planet) this series should appeal to a lot of people and give Flash a much longer stint as Venom than 20 missions.

"Check it out - - - I'M SPIDERMAN!"
"No you're Venom"
"Wah?"

Personally I like it, not big on the whole Venom being a soldier idea, but I understand where they're coming from with that. I really like that Flash is Venom though, it makes sense really, the guy is Spidey's biggest fan, wishes he could be a hero and serve his country, and also has been given a chance to walk again on top of all that. He'll slowly start getting addicted to the suit over time while on missions, and in past interviews, it's already eben said that Flash will be going through depression after be separated from the suit after a few missions, so he'll probably get addicted, bond with the suit, and become a villain in the end.

Posted by Joe Venom

He won't make it to the 20 mission mark that's for sure, the fact that he has no legs turns the suit to a drug and he will not want to let it go. The Woman with the kill switch (Katherine Glover) has already shown weakness I don't think she will be able to bring herself to killing Flash, I'll give them 7 missions tops enough to showcase what we can expect to see with Flash as Venom, Capt. Glover will tell Flash what happen to the previous host then Flash will thank her, kill her and go AWOL

More or less what you said, folk. At an integral point in a mission the symbiote will turn and him, ending in his death.

@InnerVenom123:
For me personally, it's because I'm already reading Haunt. McFarlane/Kirkman have more or less been using this general premise from jump street on their book.
Posted by Sammo21

I don't think the symbiote will kill Thompson...the only person to date that the symbiote rejected resulting in death was the....(I cant remember his name but it was Italian) kid whos father bought the symbiote from Brock.  The guy w/symbiote jumped off the building after Spider-Man and the suit literally just diteched the kid because he was so weak and pathetic.  I don't think that will happen with Thompson..if anything the symbiote will try and coerce Thompson into NOT taking it off when it comes time...I am also sure that Thompson will start becoming addicted to the freedom it brings and the being able to walk again (and more).

I am wondering when the symbiote's love/hate relationship towards Spidey will spark again.  The suit always had been a sort of jealous lover towards Spider-Man...I hope they become rivals in the future again.

Posted by InnerVenom123
@JonesDeini: Yeah, but that's with the ghost of his brother. That deals with the supernatural (at least, it will - the next issue will, it seems).

This is Venom. Kicking ass and taking names. Even if the premise is similar, different things happen.

Flash being Venom is good for Flash, I hope it lasts
Posted by InfinityOmelette

The man can walk again... He'll make it all the way up to the middle of mission #20... then go rogue, only to start a new plot line where heroes are called in to bring back the "out of control" venom suit... But he just wants to walk and have his normal life back. Will it be justified? Who knows? Will it take control of his mind and have him want to eat people's spleen? Probably, cause then it gives Heroes justification to punch him in the face... but what if it didn't? What if he really just wanted to be able to continue to walk? And the Heroes have to punch him in the face anyway? Good times. That's my prediction. :)

Flash is seriously the new venom? meh....

Posted by goldenkey

It all depends on how the series does.  If the series does well and Flash is a good character then he'll stay.  Brock is still Anit-Venom (needs a new name badly).  I don't really care.  As long as Venom isn't running around like a monster then Im all for it.  I don't like Venom being the people eater he is.  I wanted Venom what he was in the first place.  Just a bad version of Spider-man with crooked grin. The McFarlane Venom.  He was kreepier looking that way too.

I can't wait for this book. Remender's imagination is brilliant and foresee a strong, strong following for the book.

Posted by RalfvdH

Just an matter off time until the symbiote gets around the mindcontrol...
Making Flash go mad....
Although because of Brand new Day even the symbiote doesn't remember that Peter Parker is spider-man. (although I'm not sure about this .... But I recall that McGargan didn't remember it himself)
There will be the moment that The symbiote is gonna make Flash hate spider-man (or at least tries to). Which will cause that Flash has to get rid of the suit.

Maybe the symbiote does remember and makes the old feelings of flash towards "Puny parker" stronger, when flash finds out who spider-man really is.

Hell, I dont know :P For now we can enjoy flash as an good venom.

Hopefully they gonna put him against the female carnage :P

Posted by ImperiousRix

This seems like a fun idea to me, but for some reason I don't see it lasting.
Whether its the foreshadowing that the "teaser" brought or just the fact that I don't really see the book being super popular, I think it's only a matter of time before poor Flash gets his Spidey card revoked.

Edited by emptytomb

does flash had shoulder patches on his custome because he plays football. Don't you think the would be as muscular as eddie brock since he does lift weights. Is this going to get him into the NFL finally with symbolite stamina, strength and speed. Throwing a foot ball a mile away.

Did we just find out who dies this quarter for Marvel?

Posted by TheAwesome

Is this New Venom a secret from the other heroes? If so... I see a Captain America VS Venom in the future. O_O

Posted by TheMess1428

I say there is a chance that it might accidentally bond to Peter again and make Flash jealous and then he will try to get it back and it will become permanent until a big battle with Eddie Brock and then something big will probably happen.

thats awesome hes like spidey and cap only ya know with the possibility of something horribly wrong happening

After Flash Bucky should take over as Venom a give Steve back the Sheild

Posted by Nateabusa

It is giving little bread crumbs about what could happen and making something that could become VERY interesting. This is going to end horribly story-wise(great for the fans if they get what looks to be good story though maybe not for flash)! Defiantly going to give this a go and see what develops.

i like this venom its a new idea to use. we see how long  it last

The reason this is awesome (to me, anyway) is that it actually gives a good setup for meaningful character development. As much as I loved Eddie as Venom, I feel like that has run it's course unless they do some cheap "brand new day' type reset on him. I'd like to see the Anti-Venom character depowered a little and fleshed out, he's really a cool character (other than his name). I'd also like to see how the Venom symbiote might change if it permanently bonds to a person who is genuinely good hearted.

That's whats great about Anti-Venom. Eddie picked the first name that came to mind, and he thinks its so cool that he can't understand why anyone would make fun of it.

UGH!!! really want to pick up this book

It gives more character development to Flash which is a good thing.
