It's mentioned how Heath Ledger nailed it as the Joker. When that was first announced, a lot of people thought Warner Bros. was crazy. We all know that having the right actor playing the villain is what could make or break a Batman movie. Sure we need a good Batman but having an over the top performance is what will be memorable.
The Riddler could be the right villain to take the spotlight in the next movie (if it ever gets underway). He is a complex character that I don't think everyone appreciates. He's not simply a goofy dude dressed in green that asks riddles. He is an intelligent individual, despite leaving clues to his crimes for Batman to follow. That's his point. Anyone can just try to rob a bank or commit whatever crime. The Riddler is putting out a challenge each time he embarks on another venture. If written correctly, he could really give Batman a run for his money.
If you think about Stephen Colbert, he too is an intelligent and calculating individual. If you're familiar with his antics, you know he likes to do some zany things and tries to get the better of people. Who better to play someone like the Riddler? Stephen Colbert is an intelligent guy and his style of comedy would be perfect for the Riddler.
The article mentions that perhaps Warner Bros. would be more interested in someone like Johnny Depp for the Riddler. Depp is a great actor but I think he's already done too many iconic roles. I think it'd be distracting trying to see him play the Riddler when we might be thinking about Captain Jack Sparrow or even Edward Scissorhands. I think Colbert is at the right level where he just could be the right guy for the role. That is if the next Batman movie gets made and they even consider having Riddler as the villain.
