Harrison Ford Returning to 'Star Wars'

The face of everyone's favorite smuggler will allegedly return to the franchise.

In a galaxy far, far away... Latino Review dropped another huge movie scoop -- this time for the upcoming Star Wars movies.  Harrison Ford previously said he'd be interested in reprising the role, but now the website claims it's official! According to them, it's a done deal and Solo has a "significant" role in the new film.

Their headline says he'll be back for Star Wars: Episode VII. There were also previous rumors that he'd get his own spin-off film, but again, that was just a rumor and would apparently focus on a "younger" Han. Viners, are you happy to hear the scruffy looking nerf herder will allegedly be returning to the franchise?

@Grey56: We're not arguing, you're attacking me because I don't hold the same views as you. Clearly you're used to getting your way, so I don't intend to convince you of anything. I don't particularly care what you think.

This is a forum, not an arena. Be civil, sir.

Also, recognize the foolishness of accusing someone of pretentiousness...over Star Wars, the most populist pop culture creation of the past century.

Good day.

@Crash_Recovery: Pretty pictures. Does nothing to dismiss my previous statement. In fact, your thinly constructed straw man is a better effigy for poor refutation. If ever there was a way to write a Sequel to the original trilogy to incorporate older characters - this is the Delorean for it. People care about the characters - regardless of age. Don't be so pretentious to know how these folks will be cast - leading, supporting or passing motif. Regardless as to who may champion the new series as the moral hero/heroine in question - folks who Romanticize this series (you know, those of us whom still can afford to support a pop culture genre because folks under 25 don't remember the original trilogy) will PAY to see these folks past their 'prime' reprise their roles.

Either way, arguing with you is pointless - see my previous statement. I'm just thankful that you'll be shelling out money to go see it regardless and subsequently be proven wrong. Promise me though that when the curtain is dropped and everyone else around you is standing to applaud you won't break out those emergency tomatoes in mock protest.

I dont think Fisher can do her role since Leia looks pretty much the same in her sixties... Mark Hamill could probably do Luke from Fate of the Jedi but not the one in Heir of the Empire... it hard to speculate without knowing time period!

@Grey56: Very creative way to put words in my mouth.

No, I'm not hoping for Knights of the Old Republic. I'm simply hoping from a departure from the same families that have been the core characters of episodes 1-6. I'm not putting Harrison Ford down for his age, but for his lack of enthusiasm in acting and perpetual mumbling. There are many older actors that are stellar, and Harrison ford is terrific, but I don't want him to headline again.

Perhaps you have a romanticized idea of a Star Wars film where the youngest actor in the "trinity" is 61...but this isn't Red we're watching here. Look at Luke Skywalker now. He's not a fresh faced kid, or even middle aged looking, he's haggard. I love Mark Hamill and some of his voice work of the past 20 years is phenomenal, but he's past his leading man days.

I'd pretty much prefer that new Star Wars films move on from the Skywalker and Solo families, or at least the characters we've seen before.

Harrison Ford's far from prime at this point, and apparently has issues with delivering dialogue at anything stronger than a low mumble. While his contribution to Star Wars is pivotal and undeniable, it's time for us to move on and give some new actors/characters a chance to flourish.

I'm hoping what their plan is with the original cast is to act as supporting characters to kinda pass-on the mantle. Possibly with Luke acting as the Yoda of the new generation.

@Crash_Recovery: @Reignmaker:

You're both contrarian cynics who've got nothing better to do than anonymously troll an idea which the majority of others will love. I wish I could be in the theater to hear you mutter under your breath how wrong you were to say such things when he delivers the film defining performance. Again.

Oh and Crash? If having any force sensitivity gives someone utility in training a new generation of heroes - what damn difference does it make that his hair is grey? Do you even remember Kenobi from A New Hope? He was 63. Ford is 70 and looks better than half of the guys I work out with. You want them to move on from the families that the movies have been based around? Why? Because you want them to tell stories from other storylines? Just come out and say you want them to feature something from some Knights of the Old Republic video game arcana.

Not that it matters, the rest of humanity wants to see the stories about what Luke has done and what happened to the offspring of Han and Leia. People want to know how the systems responded to the end of the Empire's reign. Lastly though - you'll be satisfied at the least though because I guarantee you that Abrams gave Ford what Lucas never did; a death to give the character the significance Ford always thought he deserved. This way you can feel better about the cinematic end to one of the most identifiable heroes of sci-fi lore.

Yeah because the first trilogy wasn't successful in any other regard. Next time you see a movie blockbuster or a direct sequal, thank/curse Star Wars.

No. I have no question that Ford can act, and would do a good job for the role, but he's simply too old for the character at that point in the story. It needs to be a different actor.

@War Killer: Totally agree with you, I love Luke and leia and Han but it's time to expand the story line further and away from the skywalker universe and move into other characters.

I see this as both good and bad.

Good:

- More original cast members in the film more connection to the better trilogy that will bring back fans disappointed by I-III

- The new film cannot be immediately after Episode VI, else how would it be explained than Han is 30-40 years older than he was before

- Going off the second point, the new film will (mostly likely, fingers crossed) not continue the adventures of Luke, Han, Leia, Lando, and Chewbacca (we'll see what happens with the droids) due to their age (and I don't think Abrams would sign onto a project that was basically Red in the Star Wars universe)

Bad:

- The time gap between VI and VII implied by Ford's involvement could mean that the story focus on the Skywalker and Solo children rising to confront a new threat. I know a lot of people enjoy the Expanded Universe novels, but I don't think this would be a good idea. We need some new blood than simply the continuing struggles of these two families. A new generation of Star Wars fans should get their own heroes not simply the children of the last generation of fans heroes.

To that effect I hope Han's only involvement is as an information provider to the Jedi and New Republic through his smuggling contacts. That would still be a significant role given he'd be a critical piece of how the new heroes respond to the new enemy but his involvement should not be of a direct nature. In that manner neither should Luke as he has bigger issues with leading the new Jedi and being the bridge to the New Republic.

Going off topic a bit, but to those that would prefer to see the Skywalker and Solo children, I think you could still do that somewhat. I would change the Expanded Universe enough that Luke and Mara still had Ben but that Han and Leia only had Jaina and Anakin, no Jacen. The three children would be in their early to mid-30's and be instructors in the Jedi order and some of Luke's most trusted members.

That way the new protagonist(s) would be in the late teens to early 20's range (just as Luke and Leia were) as they begin the journey and trials that will define the new trilogy. Personally I think they should have twin protagonists styled afer the personalities and relationship of Jaina and Jacen (which is why I don't include Jacen in the new film so the younger twins aren't exact copies) on the verge of taking their trials to become Jedi Knights. This would give us the new heroes a new generation of viewers should have to build new fans from while still giving older fans the familiar names associated with the first trilogy and later novels so that at some point in the new trilogy we see Ben, Jaina, and Anakin in action much the same way we saw Yoda, Windu, and other members of the Jedi Council in action in II and III.

Harrison Ford could dig up my grandma and sodomize her in front of me, on my birthday. Also, I don't remember how or why that's relevant to the topic. Oh yeah, and that's why you can't microwave spoons. You just can't.

This is interesting. Maybe he'll be like a supporting role? This is making me believe that his three children or just Jaina might be the main cast. Same with Luke and his son, Ben.

I'd rather have a younger actor play a Han's early days. Ford is a great actor and I love him as Solo, but there comes a time where you have to move on and let someone else take over the role. Newer audiences don't want to see an old guy, they want a younger actor whom they can relate to better, in my opinion.

Personally I'd rather see the new films focus on completely new characters. Luke, Leia, and the gang have had their stories told through various comics, novels, and video games, on top of the three movies they stared in. It's time we looked forwards towards a new generation of Star Wars fans and a new era of characters in the SW Universe.

Surprising since Harrison didn't even really want to do Return of the Jedi. But, this is still some sweet news! He'll own it as Han again! But, great kids, don't get cocky.
