Gwen Stacy Must Die...Again

One of the most pivotal moments in Spider-Man's life and it needs to happen on the big screen.

No Caption Provided
It's a matter of comic book fact that Mary Jane Watson is the love of Peter Parker's life. She's the Lois Lane to his Superman; the loving girlfriend (and later wife) that stood by him through countless trials and tribulations, ultimately sacrificing that love in order to heal his sickly Aunt May.

However, most of us are quick to pass over the other one – the blond. When Mary Jane’s party girl lifestyle became too much for Pete, Gwendolyn Stacy replaced her as the dame on Spidey’s arm.  Her romance with Peter was tumultuous: jealous of the redhead, she dated Peter’s best friend Harry, moved on to date Peter, dealt with the death of her father (which Spider-Man could have prevented) and travelled to London in order to live with an Aunt and Uncle. Though their relationship was difficult at times, it was clear that Peter and Gwen loved each other very much.

Her importance has been underscored by the use of her character to pull at Spider-Man’s heartstrings: first through Norman Osborn’s manipulations (Sin’s Past) and most recently in Amazing Spider-Man #655. She has replaced Mary Jane Watson as Andrew Garfield’s love interest in the forthcoming The Amazing Spider-Man film; this gives younger viewers who are unfamiliar with her to see a very important part of Peter Parker’s life, and appreciate it.

And her importance is why she needs to die. Again.
 == TEASER ==
For me, The Amazing Spider-Man will be a total wash if Gwen Stacy does not die. Her death, originally told in Amazing Spider-Man #121-122, is one of the most pivotal moments of Peter Parker’s life: without Gwen Stacy’s death, Peter would not have been able to transition from a teenager to man. Suddenly, it becomes all-too-evident that being close to Spider-Man has its risks, and that is a responsibility that Peter lives with for the rest of his life.

It’s saddening that Stacy’s role in the Spider-Man mythos has been reduced to a glorified Women in Refrigerators example, but I’ve lost count of how many people who have been hurt because of their involvement in his life – even poor old Aunt May almost got shot by a sniper at the behest of the Kingpin.
No Caption Provided
This risk reinforced the importance of a Spider-Man’s secret identity; after all, the Green Goblin only abducted Stacy because she knew of Peter Parker’s dual life. The mask not only became a precaution against people bothering Peter directly, but one to protect those who associate with him. The attempt that was made to reveal Spider-Man’s identity during Civil War only served to reinforce that point: May and Mary Jane had to move into the Avengers Tower, which robbed them of a normal life.

A normal life is all Peter ever wanted for them, which works into Ben Parker’s old line, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” Gwen’s death reinforced Peter’s need to follow this rule and take responsibility for what he indirectly caused. This, in turn, drove him closer to the people who care about him and take their protection more seriously.

No Caption Provided
Sadly, the “Death of Gwen Stacy” storyline looks to be unlikely for The Amazing Spider-Man; with the casting of Rhys Ifans in the role of Kurt Conners/The Lizard and rumors of a Proto-Goblin appearance, the villain roster looks to be pretty stacked. However, there haven’t been any official casting details about any of the Osborn clan, which were pretty important to Peter’s high school life; we could still see a multi-villain movie, with Green Goblin, Proto Goblin and the Lizard. Then again, a new rumor surfaced that perhaps Ifans will play Norman instead...

But it doesn’t change the fact that The Amazing Spider-Man needs to illustrate a certain side of Spider-Man: the transition from awkward teen to responsible man. As we’ve had three films in the last decade that explain his origins, the film should be able to illustrate a cohesive story from start to finish, giving viewers a taste of the emotional gravitas the situation carries. We should, theoretically, be able to jump into the meat of the story and actually have a movie with purpose. At the very least, The Amazing Spider-Man shouldn’t be the cluster of confusion that Spider-Man 3 was. And we can take solace in that.

Sure would be sweet if Carnage killed her... aslong as Carnage doesn't look like Ultimate Carnage.

Of course she MUST die, but I don't think she WILL die. There is talk that this isn't a reboot, but a telling of Peter's "Lost High School Days", and according to the 3rd movie, Gwen sticks around... Which is dumb.

Wow... I thought this thread was about Gwen having been ressructed in comics and having to die again (since I haven't read ASM in a long time). But I do agree with this... as much as it pain for me to agree with it.

I think this question is how many times has Gwen died in the comics and it is once. She died and she stayed dead which has tormented Spiderman ever since, which was most present when House of M happened and reality was bent by Scarlet Witch to give everyone what would truly make them happy Peter was still with Gwen and not with Mary Jane, when he got his memory back and realised that the reality was a lie he broke down at the sight of Gwen still alive but knew she shouldn't be and that they would have to change the world back.

There is a clone of Gwen Stacy called Gwen Miles who want nothing to do with Peter Parker and was married to another clone, this one of Dr Miles Warren who had done the cloning, until he died in a car accident.

The change of costume says it all. When something is rebooted these days, it seems like everything the old version had used (regardless of whether they are quality or not) has to be replaced. Take the recently rebooted Spectacular Spider-Man animated series, for example.

I'm not so sure that they'll head that direction as I'm pretty sure they confirmed mechanical web shooters as opposed to the organic ones in the original movie franchise. They've been claiming a reboot for years now so it would be a shame to see it wasted by making it a prequel.

You're probably right. Like a month ago Avi Arad was saying that this isn't a reboot, but I think at this point everyone's good with the idea.

A good story is always worth telling repetitively, like Fairy Tales. But I partially agree, they need to redo the origin story, tackle it in a different angle, and hopefully, shed some creative light on the movie industry.

@krotosclone: but isn't that the whole point of this movie, it is setting up a base so that they can take it in a new direction. Because what they had already created wasn't working..by doing this there is the chance to see the Spiderman franchise go a little bit darker and tackle new story lines that perhaps they would have stayed away from in the past. The old Spiderman movies had run their course..they couldn't go any further with them, in fact they'd already gone to far. So if you want to see the series continue and to get new story lines from another part of his story you need to support this one..otherwise it wont go anywhere and in ten years, maybe less, someone new comes along and tries to reboot it again thus presenting another origin story.

I think it's unfair to say that Gwen is often forgotten about because of MJ.  On the contrary, it seems that MJ is constantly having to live in Gwen's shadow.

But it was a waste of the Raimi movies not to explore that relationship.  She was just a side character, not even a real love interest.  And considering how teary & emo those movies were, it's surprising that they didn't go for this legendary story.

the basic fact is that Gwen Stacy must die..her death to this day has always meant a lot to me and how Spiderman was shaped. In the comic book world for someone to stay dead, it is momentos..and the fact that no one has brought her back in the comics yet..while it may be Marvel taking a stance against it but I hope it is due to respect from the comic book community that some deaths need to happen and stick. The death of Gwen dragged Spidey down to a dark and human level and it's that darkness that keeps him from turning into a character that no one actually cares about. I hope they kill her so that non comic book characters can feel that feeling that resonated with me as a kid when I read that scene.

i dont think Ifans will play Osborn... i personally think this take on Spider-man will be structured like Nolan's Batman. like we saw The Joker in the second installment I think we will see a new and improved Green Goblin as the villan in the next Spider-Man film. Unfortunatly thats when we'll see the death of Gwen. Which would be a shame as Emma Stone is fantastic.

So is she going to bang Norman Osborn just like in the comic too? Cause that seem like all that has become of her legacy as one of Pete's greater romances.

I think that it will eventually come to that story but it wont be in this film.  Since its the start of the reboot series, theyre gonna begin by establishing the characters.  The fact that there may be a proto-goblin in the movie is a foreshadowing of things to come so eventually Green Goblin will step in as a villain in a future movie, most likely the 2nd one.  Have any of you heard the rumor that there's supposed to be a second spidey in the movie?  Im not talking stunt man or anything like that. Im talking story wise.  If thats true then I think they'll go in the direction that Ultimate Spider-man took where a low level criminal used a spider-man costume as a gimmick to commit crimes.  The spider-imposter was responsible for Captain Stacy's death.  I believe the rumor of the second spidey to be true due to the fact that they have pics of a scene where he is introduced.

I think in the first movie they should concentrate on the relationship Peter and Gwen have and only one villain (The Lizard) and then in the second movie we get to see the Green Goblin kill her... If they put too much plots in the first movie we'll get another Spider-man 3 movie...

Its not just Gwen that Norman got with, it was also harry's girlfriend, and both women ended up pregnant with his kids. well for menace it was Harry's kid anyways. and it was a clone that nailed norman anyways of gwen.

Yea, so they've already said multiple times that she won't be dying yet guys, Emma Stone confirmed it herself that she won't die. Granted they wouldn't say if she was, but they wouldn't outright lie and say she won't if she was going to. I hope she doesn't die in Amazing anyways, because Gwen's death wouldn't have the same emotional impact if you just met the girl. You keep her around for a bit, give the audience a chanced to fall in love with her and then you do it, so you get a better reaction.

I'm concerned that if they do kill her in the movie and do it the same way they did in the comics people will think they're just repeating the bridge scene from the first movie with MJ and Goblin. If they decide to kill her in the new series of movies they have to do it in a different way. In Spider-Man 3 I when they brought in Gwen I was kinda hoping they were gonna kill MJ.

@Mucklefluga:  I didnt think about the chameleon. That'd actually be a pretty sweet plot twist.  The only problem with that is how would the chameleon benefit from galavanting around as a new to superheroism Spidey.  As for MJ, Im not sure if she is or not.  If so she's probably gonna be a side character.

I agree.  We have yet to see a lead romantic character bite the dust and show the dramatic impact on the hero.  I think this is even more important for a character like Spiderman.

The reboot has no soul.

The costume looks weird in pics i have seen.It almost seems like the sutido is intent on useing the lizzard as the main villain to spite Rami.Sony needs to let this go if the film doesnt make its money back.

Sony an Fox have both made their money back from thier investments int buying the rights. its just sad now.

I'm thinking Captain Stacy will die in near the end of the first, the second will have her and Peter dealing with all that angst and then coming out of it happy, then they whack her in the third movie.

I definitely want to see it in the new franchise, too, but I can understand why they wouldn't want to do that right away. I'm sure they plan to have more than one Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movie, so I'd bet on her dying in a sequel.

I agree that she should die, but not until a later film. Possibly the third to get the groundwork layed down, and so people (and Peter) get more attatched to her.

I don't expect to see her death in Amazing Spider-Man but I think that there is a pretty high likelyhood that we could see it in a sequel. With the success of Dark Knight and the way that they killed the love interest in that movie I don't think that they will be as hesitant about it. If they do it could have the same intensity and success that Dark Knight experienced.

"It's a matter of comic book fact that Mary Jane Watson is the love of Peter Parker's life."

Highly debatable opinion.

Not to mention, isn't it a little premature to kill Gwen...already? Wouldn't it be vastly superior to kill her in the inevitable sequel, once we've actually gotten to know her?
