@the_lobster_:

He's been portrayed as British in all of his incarnations, except for one.

http://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/voice-compare/Guardians-of-the-Galaxy/Rocket-Raccoon/

That's not the point I was making.

I was making that Rocket Raccoon is still the same character, with out without the accent. All of those incarnations are the same in terms of personality and character. So if Rocket is the exact same character with or without the accent.....than what does it matter if he has it or not?

If he's supposed to be British, that's never come across to me. He's an alien Raccoon.

Thank you!

Why are people so insistent that the alien Raccoon has to be British? There's gotta be a valid reason other than comic book fans just being nit-picky?

Yeah I mean I get the "Rocky Raccoon" reference, but I don't see how that means he's "British".

He's from another planet. I'm pretty sure that makes him especially not British.

You guys do know that Rocket Raccoon is a genetically altered raccoon right? He wasn't born on some alien planet that happens to have people who look like raccoons. The reason why the British accent is important is because that is an integral part of his character. He speaks using British vernacular. If you simply ignore it, then he basically turns into Blade, whose British, but no one seems to know it.

Oh okay, I'm not claiming to be an expert. I have yet to read a comic with him shown that way, though. He always claims he's NOT a raccoon.

But I did check the Marvel website before posting, just to make sure, and I saw nothing like that about him being from earth. It says origins unknown :) just sayin'

@extremis:

He's a genetically altered raccoon, who was made to guard a race of aliens, who, for a lack of a better word, were mentally retarded. His allies were other talking animals, like a walrus and an otter. If he's of an alien race, there has been no other appearance of his species in the entirety of his publication (at least to the extent I'm aware of).

I was aware of this, and I still fail to see an importance.

How is the British accent important other than the fact that he speaks with a British accent? Give me one example other than he was created to have British accent, so he should have a British accent. Because that's not a reason, that's an expectation.

I can say the Joker was supposed to have fallen into a vat of acid, but that doesn't mean he's the Joker if he didn't. The Dark Knight proved that. You can still have the Joker, even if he wears make-up instead of bleached skin. Your Blade example is a good one too, Blade was still Blade in terms of being that character in the movie, accent or not. You can still have Rocket Raccoon be Rocket Raccon without the accent.

What part of Rocket's personality is defined by him being British or Australian or any form of nationality other than Raccoon?

His accent is as important as any other character's accent. Simply stating that he's a raccoon and it doesn't matter is simply brushing the issue away. It's no different then why Rogue has a southern accent and Gambit having a Cajun accent. If they didn't, people would be pissed. I'm assuming people don't care about Rocket Raccoon because they didn't grow up reading him, and thus have no sentimental connection to him losing a part of his character.

Your example with Joker is also lacking because he's origin story is of no concern to his character whatsoever. That is part of the mystique behind him as well. No one knows who he was before the incident. On the other hand, the accent is an integral part of Rocket Raccoon, because he was created to have that accent and it has stuck for decades (evident by the fact that he has a British accent in all, but one, of his animated appearances - barring the GotG movie).

Unknown to my vocabulary there is a word for when awesome greatly exceeds awesome. That word describes this live action Rocket Raccoon. Seriously, it makes me giggle like a school girl and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Those things are important, I don't disagree with you at that. Rogue needs a southern accent, Gambit needs to be Cajun....But only because they're human! Because where they come from on earth is part of their personality. Rocket is a Raccoon, not a human. Raccoon's don't have English accents, they could have any accent because they don't speak. Plus, He comes from space, which last I checked didn't have a specific accent native to it.

Exactly, and what accent a talking "Space Raccoon" has, is of no importance to the character whatsoever. Because he doesn't come from a place that is native to any specific accents. At least not a human one. The only reason Rocket has the accent is because his creators threw it in there. There's no reason why he has, he just has it. So once again.....what difference does it make? If he was a Raccoon that was picked up from the slums of England by aliens and experimented on, than there's a reason why he would have an accent. But as is....no reason.

So all of his animated appearances except the movie have him speaking British? What about Billy West in Ultimate Spider-man or Seth Green in Avengers Assemble, those certainly don't sound British. Yet in terms of personality and character, they're exactly the same as Greg Ellis or John Dimaggio's versions.

@the_lobster_:

The British accent is important. Go read some of his earlier comics. The accent add a dimension to his character and has a great nuance to it. It's a nod to his origins (not his literary origin, but his creation). His British accent gives him access to a whole range of words that are not normally used in American lingo. It does nothing but make him more unique. Removing it serves no purpose other than dulling his character down from what it should be.

You think maybe the reason why current shows featuring Rocket Raccoon don't use a British accent is because of the movie? For example, the Avengers Assemble comic made Black Widow a member of the Avengers, despite the fact that her role in the group wasn't substantial prior to the movie's release.

What I'm truly scared of is that writers will simply remove Rocket Raccoon's accent altogether, like they did to Blade. Blade uses words and phrases that are completely American and not even British. It neuters the characters and makes them more boring.

There is no reason why Rocket Raccoon can't have a British accent. It makes as much sense as Rocket Raccoon speaking American English. It would make his character more dynamic, because what is better than a raccoon, with guns, swearing in a British accent?

Finally, I agree 100% with you.

But that being said, the accent is certainly not a deal breaker for me. I'm confident that Bradley Cooper will do a great job as Rocket.

I'm British and I couldn't care less if Rocket was British, given that he is a Raccoon in outer space. Sacrificing a cinematic vision in order to appease fanboys/be more 'faithful' is a silly idea anyway. More on topic to the actual article; sweet holy Jesus with bells on that looks fantastic. Watched it four times through before I left the page.

While this trailer was many, many, many times better than the first and I'm pretty sure I'll be attacked by rabid fanboys by this, I can't say I'm impressed.

The overall plot is still incredibly vague and frankly the whole thing feels like yet another regurgitation of what Marvel has all ready done. "Mindless action with quippy characters". I'm not really sure how that's different or riskier than anything they have done. Its basically almost all they've done. Its beyond old at this point.

General masses will eat it up left and right though, I expect. They have so far. But you'll forgive me for not being impressed especially when this is being hyped up as so different from anything they've done.

I'll see it of course and keep an open mind but this trailer isn't impressive.

Anyone else think that last line was a joke about how this movie is unbelievably risky and people were saying it was a bad idea that wouldn't work on film and now everyone is hyped as frack for the movie?

My only gripe is Rockets voice actor. Not for stupid unbelievably nitpick reasons that it's not the accent that he was made to have even though that is not a key essential element to the character it adds absolutly nothing to the character and making any sort of deal over it is being a nitpicky comic book purist i'm sorry but that's being a purist. The problem with the voice is for one thing it doesn't sound like a smarta** but also the voice is so inconsistant it sounds different in all three lines of dialogue he has.

Sorry but I actually like Rocket Raccoon and not just some vague idea of the character.
