Greg Pak to Write BATMAN/SUPERMAN

DC's two biggest heroes will soon co-star in an all-new title.

Greg Pak is heading to DC Comics... and he has the honor of writing two of the publisher's most iconic heroes in the same book! He'll be the brains behind the upcoming ongoing BATMAN/SUPERMAN and Jae Lee will illustrate. Speaking with USA Today, Pak is clearly beyond elated over the opportunity.

Working in comics, almost every project you do for DC or Marvel deals with these amazing characters that are so much fun to work with," Pak says. "But, wow, Superman and Batman? That kind of lifts your hat and spins it around in the air a bit.

BATMAN/SUPERMAN will take place in the past when both characters are new at being heroes. Additionally, this series will reveal the first encounter between the two in New 52 history. The writer also says readers will be "very pleasantly excited" when we find out what the threat to both leads will be. Furthermore, he claims the series will have a lasting impact on the new continuity.

Batman/Superman is a really exciting place to discover who these guys are, and the things we're going to discover particularly in this first story arc will have ramifications later on down the line," he adds. "We're going to start in the past but it'll reverberate through. It'll be big and crazy and tons of fun.

== TEASER ==

BATMAN/SUPERMAN will debut this June. Viners, does the tag team of Pak and Lee make this a must read for you? Share your thoughts below.

It's Primmaster. He wont be happy until Batman is erased from history and DC is renamed "Superman Comics".

And this is good news. Maybe we'll get a well-written Superman by someone other than Morrison.

LOL.

I will probably drop detective comics to add this. I sure don't need another Batman book, but I'll read it.

@Zeeguy91: Well the difference is that DC appears to just put out the books like Animal Man and Swamp Thing and then just sits back to see if they will take off or not on their own. They don't appear to actively help these books reach more readers, where as JLA and it's two accompanying titles Vibe and Katana has gotten a massive boost through the promotions they've gotten.

not sure if you're trolling, outside, but you know that is not true.

Animal Man was given MASSIVE promotion. Before it was being released, DC would show a panel of Animal Man in the source blog. This went on for 2 months.

Swamp Thing was also one of the books that were given massive discount alongside Batwoman and few other books. The reason being DC believed in these 5 books so they gave a massive discount to encourage retailers to pick them up.

@sethysquare: I mean outside DC's own blog (that I dont believe is particularly well visited in comparison to sites like CV and CBR if I have to be honest). It's not a MASSIVE boost if no one see's it.

Well, I do recall Lemire giving lots of interviews and DC kept pushing this book. Sure they did not pick these 2 books out and go like hey check these 2 books out of the 52 books we are launching together, but DC did give a fair amount of talented writer and artist and promotion for the book. Like it or not, the masive discount for Swamp Thing did it plenty of favours. DC also advertised for Animal Man and Swamp Thing trades and Rotworld. So I'll say perhaps you either forgot about it or just over looked it.

@sethysquare: I mentioned the banners for a reason, because unlike interviews, they are on your screen the moment you visit a front page, while interviews have to draw you in with nothing but the title of the article. (Also the creative teams give atleast one interview as a standard when they start off). All that said, AM and ST was perhaps the wrong examples, because they are actually still here, unlike the 18 or so books that's been canned since the New 52 started, books like Amethyst, Frankenstein, Men of War, Team 7, Hawk & Dove, Deathstroke, Hawkman, Captain Atom, Legion Lost...

Why can't they be equals? All the best comics that feature the two of them focus on how different and yet similar they are. How they are the both the best of what they represent. The former Superman/Batman comic did that, and I'd like to hope this one does as well.

I honestly don't see the need to have the two fight so often, especially given they're two characters who should change the least and who in normal canon stories are going to be on the same side at the end of the day.

animal man and swamp thing were also on banners together with 50 other titles. They made a collage of it and put in as an ad on several comics website haven't you seen it.

if you're talking about the 2nd wave and 3rd wave then i get it.

@sethysquare: I might have, but putting it into a collage isn't really promoting it...as you mention there are 48 other books that want the same attention. And yes I am talking about the 2nd and 3rd wave...also I havent noticed DC trying to save the titles Liefeld wrote other than replacing him with someone who obviously was only there to close them down. Also I am talking about books like Demon Knights and I, Vampire, where the promotional material has been almost non-existent in comparison to JLA and DotF.

@mbembet: Dude, I say this as a Batman fan, but Batman is in no way shape or form objectively superior to Superman. Plenty of people love Superman. Hell, I love Superman (not as much as I love Batman, but still). And why shouldn't we? He was the first superhero. He has plenty of great stories and great villains. Objectively. Batman and Superman are equals. They're probably just putting Batman's name first this time just because Superman's was first the last time. If they launch another volume at some point in the future, they'll probably call it Superman/Batman again.

DC you guys need to get rid of at least two Batman books come on this is rediculas 6 Batman comics? WTF is this 90's Spider-man? I like Batman and I know Superman is in this also but please get rid of a Batman comic this is absolutely stupid. 5 Batman books is unneeded but come on 6 is the last string.

well, with regards to giving ST and AM promotion, what makes them more special than the other 50 books from new 52? Is it because they are better written? Then what about I, Vampire, Demon Knights, Wonder Woman, Action Comics, Batman, ASW and more.

with regards to Liefeld, their sales are already horrible, there is no way a miracle will happen unless its involve in some sort of big crossover, its not going to exponentially increase sales to the point that it'll be safe. I think Justin Jordan did a wonderful job on Deathstroke.

I also saw Demon Knights new creative team in book ads and I, Vampire trade ads and I, Vampire and JLD crossover ads.

DC is already giving these books more shelf life than they would normally have. A book about Vampires that during initial polls were ranked at the bottom, A book about several characters in the medieval times with magic just wouldn't usually work. Given to Marvel, they would've been cancelled in 8 issues or less. But DC gave I, Vampire more chance than they normally would have, frequently giving small crossovers written beautifully and retaining the writer and promoting him to write some of the flagship books in DC. I'll say DC did everything right in the Dark department. Sure they cancelled books like Team 7 and Amethyst prematurely, but they were never fantastic to begin with. I think Jordan's writing is great but he just didn't handled team 7 well enough since there are no outstanding characteristics to each of the team members, thats one thing he didn't do well, although he did write a fantastic DS which is why he is again being rewarded with GLNG and Superboy.

Batman is equal to Superman on a character level, not a physical one, it's worth mentioning and it's not a bad thing. Their differences are what helps make their team ups so interesting.

@sethysquare: In regards to AM and ST, I believe it has to do with it being the current fan-favorites and critical darlings of DC; Lemire and Snyder being the writers.

I would ask where you've seen these ads (outside of interviews)? And I have to say that advertisements for trades is far too late when it's DC (thats 8-10 months after the last of the floppy issues release date), like I, Vampire was probably already doomed before the first trade came out they just allowed the story to finish. And I dont know, but moving the writer of a book DC cba promoting to a bigger title doesnt help the other title unless the writer does a bang up job on the other book, if it's lucky (I dont expect many Lantern-fans suddenly fancying Demon Knights unless they already had a slight interest in fantasy-writing).

I loved the pre-52 run, and I really like Greg Pak, but given that in the recent Red Hood, Batman said (when Jason brought up Supes) "He's not my friend" -- and this isn't new as it's already been shown in the new-52 that they aren't buddy-buddy. So I'm a little wary that it will be very different from the old relationship we knew & loved.

those are in book ads that i saw. well, you make it sound like DC promotes a whole lot more for Wonder Woman or Action Comics than it did for swamp thing and animal man.

I, Vampire was doomed from the start, its because its such a critical darling and fan favourite that it managed to last as long as it did. Compared to say voodoo or black hawks.

It may not help Demon Knights that much, but for a start, giving the book a great writer like Venditti is a big step. Then when their talents are being recognised, they move these writers to a higher profile book. Honestly, I believe more people bough I, Vampire because of Sorrentino and Fialkov's work rather than Andrew Bennett. Not that he isn't a great character, but the creative talents behind it is what moved the book. So recognising that, DC moved them to bigger books and thats a plus for me. There is no point massively promoting Demon Knights when the book will never reap the same kind of rewards that promoting say JLA will. But willing to look at how good the book is and avoiding to cancel it is what DC can do and thats what they have been doing for Dial H, I, Vampire, Demon Knights.

For everyone complaining about this being another Batman book, a little detail: its joining the Justice League family of books, not the Batman family. Does anyone here remember the old Superman/Batman series? Yes, it had Batman in it, but Batman was by no means the star of the book. It was more so a showcase of Superman and Batman interacting with the rest of the DC Universe. This'll be the same. Its just like Justice League. Batman's there, and he does his share, but he's not the star.

Also, there's already another company named AC Comics.
