GREEN ARROW Gets a New Creative Team in October

CW's Arrow writers to take over on the book.

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino's run on GREEN ARROW is coming to an end. On October 1st, issue #35 of GREEN ARROW will come out with a whole new creative team. However, these names will be familiar to those who watch and enjoy the CW's television series Arrow.

The LA Times announced today that Arrow executive producer Andrew Kreisberg and writer Ben Sokolowski will have their shot to expand the audience of the hit television series into comics by writing GREEN ARROW. The two will be writing the series while Daniel Sampere (BATGIRL) will be providing the art.

Issue #35 will place Oliver Queen back in Seattle and have him involved in an adventure with a mysterious woman. Both Kreisber and Sokolowski say that their Green Arrow will not be an adaptation of the CW show, but it will be more about "cross-pollination." Sokolowski told the LA Times this about their upcoming run on the book:

“We really want to bring the old-school Oliver Queen voice back to the character. In other words, the opinionated, liberal Robin Hood-esque hero that has fallen through the cracks a bit, both in the comics and TV models.”

Since Lemire and Sorrentino took over on GREEN ARROW #17, the book has been a smashing success at DC and brought in new readers in droves. Their run on the book introduced fans to a darker version of the character, dealing with ghosts from his past.

However, there are 2 million regular viewers for the CW Arrow series and there is a lot of hope that viewers who love said series will jump over to the comic book because it features Sokolowski and Kreisberg.

The new creative team takes over on October 1st, with issue #35.

everything comes to an end..!

ok, as many of you may already know, Jeff Lemire and I are leaving Green Arrow, September Future's End issue being our last one. Just want everyone to know that DC never asked or pushed us to leave the book. It was Jeff and mine decision to close after 20 issues in a row and a closure of a circle. It was a blast working with Jeff Lemire (and with my always faithful Marcelo Maiolo) and for those who loved the team-work, i'm more than sure we're going to work together again pretty soon.

I've given all myself to this run (and the same can be said of Jeff) and I hope we've given you fans a fresh and exciting monthly read and a new mythology to Green Arrow for future creative teams to have fun with.

Thanks much everyone for the love and support showed during this incredible two years. It has been GREAT.

I also wish a luminous future to the new creative team. I'm more than sure they'll make wonders with the Emeralr Archer.

All i can say now is that it's time to look ahead to new exciting projects! Stay tuned on my Twitter (And_Sorrentino) for more news coming soon! :)

@jonny_anonymous: So writers can't get better over time right? So if I wrote a book back in 2006 that was average. That means I'll do the same thing in 2014? If your not going to read it, then whatever. It's your choice. At least there are some people who are willing to GIVE THE BOOK A SHOT, rather than saying that it's going to suck.

I'll give it a shot, but expectations are low. If Lemire and Sorrentio (sp?) wanted to leave, that'd be one thing. But that's not what it sounds like. They have this screwed up idea that fans who like only the show, will suddenly want to read the comic. Maybe. They have professional marketing folks (I think) who might know something we don't, but that sounds like a long-shot, at best. I just hope the book doesn't go back to it's issues 1-16 days. (Fwiw: I don't like her art that much, but love Lemire's writing.)

I swear if DC screws this team and book over just to get Sorrentino on a Batman book I will be pissed.

Maybe if we complain enough and the creative team sucks they will put Lemire and Sorrentino back where they belong.

I really don't like Arrow, but I do like the idea that Ollie will be returning to his roots. I like his new design, but his character since the New 52 began has been super bland. I'll give their first issue a shot.

Green Arrow was one of the very few good things still going at DC. Taking LaS off the project is a bad idea. Lemire saying it was his choice..I don't buy it..he has stated many times he had long term plans for the character. And now DC thinks GA will get 2 million buys just because that's how many people watch Arrow?

Just continues to show that DC is run by a bunch of morons.

I love Arrow! I think it's so good, something can't possibly be better! That said, it's sad that Lemire and company are leaving the Green Arrow title, as they've been doing a really good job. I too was under the impression they were going to stick around a lot longer than this, and am disappointed. But hey, instead of theorizing that DC manipulated the creators into telling untruths on their behalf without any evidence supporting that theory, (aside from essentially character witnesses) let's come up with a well-rounded bunch of theories. My favorite is that the creative team got the opportunity to work on something else and jumped at it, but as a side effect had to dump some of their current stuff. I think the releases the creators have given support that theory much more than the other. I for one am excited to see where they'll go next. I'm one of those people who only picked up Detective Comics because I had enjoyed Manupal's and Buccellatto's run on the Flash, so I'll probably pick up something else by Lemire and Sorrentino. Also, sad story, I had been reading the very lackluster first sixteen issues of Green Arrow digitally, to check it out and did a Comixology subscription. When Lemire took over, I had never heard of him at the time, so I had no idea how good it was going to be. It never occurred to me to switch to print until halfway through the run, but by then I had spent so much money on digital, I didn't want to spend more on the same issues in print. So I'm thinking about switching to print with the debut of this new creative team in case it's something special, so I'm on the ground floor or however the expression goes. As for the new team, if it's half as good as Arrow is, it'll be great. However, seeing as they all ready write the adventures of a very different take on Oliver Queen so well, I think it's a little much to ask for them to write the mainstream Green Arrow as good too. I may be surprised, but I'll set my expectations low. And of course with low expectations, one always enjoys something more. I doubt it will be as good as the current team's though. On a completely unrelated note, has it been announced when Azzarello leaves Wonder Woman. If I did the math correctly, thirty-six issues would put his last issue at this December if you take out the Septembers of Zero Month, Villains' Month, and Futures End Month.

I hope they don't get rid of Emiko, Fyff and Naomi to replace them with Felicity, Thea (for gods sake if you introduce her just call her Mia Deardeen!), an Diggle. I really liked what Lemire had been doing, we still haven't seen a proper ending to some characters like Shado, Magus and the Longbow Hunters. Please don't try to convert this in a CW drama Areow is good as a TV show but thw writing is pretty bad to comic book standars.

everything comes to an end..!

ok, as many of you may already know, Jeff Lemire and I are leaving Green Arrow, September Future's End issue being our last one. Just want everyone to know that DC never asked or pushed us to leave the book. It was Jeff and mine decision to close after 20 issues in a row and a closure of a circle. OK posting that on his own blog is at least more legit but I'm still suspicious that it was a hair brained scheme on DC's part to try and bring readers from the Arrow show onto the current comic. Which is never going to happen. Plus Lemire said he was only halfway through his run and had more ideas on the way. It's confusing to say the least.

@billy_batson: Hmm you make fair points. Lemire is going places with Justice League United and I have enjoyed reading that. Plus a weekly does take up a lot of time and his Indie stuff too. But honestly I'd rather see him off JLU or Future's End than Green Arrow. It's one of DC's finest books and they could have done so much more with their run not to mention the fans wanting them to do so. Just another mistake on DC's long list of them.

I'm sensing something deeper going on here behind the scenes. Lemire and Sorrentino were a great hit!! And as stupid as DC can be at times, there's always one thing that any company will listen to: MONEY. And Lemire and Sorrentino have been bringing DC the $$$. So my theory is that this news is actually tied to some other unreleased news by DC Comics that would trump the disappointment of them leaving Green Arrow. Perhaps a Cyborg (and Metal Men?) ongoing, or a Martian Manhunter ongoing. Whatever it is, the question still remains "What will these creators work on now?" And THAT is the answer to why they are no longer on Green Arrow.

@mrgreenlantern: I for one think it's a great move. I don't want it to be THE focal point, but it's about time that they brought that element back in considering it is such a vital part of his character. Also, keep in mind that this doesn't mean that it will be left-wing propaganda, simply that it will be more political and that his views will be challenged by others. Look at the classic Green Arrow / Green Lantern run of the 70's. While Green Arrow was a strong liberal, his liberal views would also be a source of conundrum for him, and Green Lantern would always be there to challenge those views with more conservative ones. During a time, Hawkman was as conservative as Green Arrow was liberal, and it was great since they would always challenge each other. Or look at the Marvel equivalent in Iron Man and how his overly-capitalist views both enhance and limit the character. I just hope that they don't make this liberal element of Green Arrow trite and 2-dimensional. But history has shown that characters like these can be written with great nuance and room for growth. And for characters like Green Arrow...you need this. Divorcing Green Arrow from his ideologies is like divorcing Batman from his trauma and obsession.
