GREEN ARROW Gets a New Creative Team in October

CW's Arrow writers to take over on the book.

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino's run on GREEN ARROW is coming to an end. On October 1st, issue #35 of GREEN ARROW will come out with a whole new creative team. However, these names will be familiar to those who watch and enjoy the CW's television series Arrow.

The LA Times announced today that Arrow executive producer Andrew Kreisberg and writer Ben Sokolowski will have their shot to expand the audience of the hit television series into comics by writing GREEN ARROW. The two will be writing the series while Daniel Sampere (BATGIRL) will be providing the art.

Issue #35 will place Oliver Queen back in Seattle and have him involved in an adventure with a mysterious woman. Both Kreisber and Sokolowski say that their Green Arrow will not be an adaptation of the CW show, but it will be more about "cross-pollination." Sokolowski told the LA Times this about their upcoming run on the book:

“We really want to bring the old-school Oliver Queen voice back to the character. In other words, the opinionated, liberal Robin Hood-esque hero that has fallen through the cracks a bit, both in the comics and TV models.”

Since Lemire and Sorrentino took over on GREEN ARROW #17, the book has been a smashing success at DC and brought in new readers in droves. Their run on the book introduced fans to a darker version of the character, dealing with ghosts from his past.

However, there are 2 million regular viewers for the CW Arrow series and there is a lot of hope that viewers who love said series will jump over to the comic book because it features Sokolowski and Kreisberg.

The new creative team takes over on October 1st, with issue #35.

They only thing that's surprising is that they aren't canceling the book - which I thought was going to happen.

Not saying I like the change, but you can't exactly blame them for trying to increase sales. No body is buying Green Arrow as is.

But at least all 30 of us have our self righteous hatred

True speak. It is sad though that not many are buying GA.

Even if they didn't change teams, it would have been canceled before issue 50. And that's probably a generous estimate.

Companies don't do these things for charity yanno.

Yeah. I mean, I'm reading it, and I love it, so Lemire leaving is a shame, but I'm not gonna nerdrage over it and shun DC and the title, it was bound to happen eventually, who knows, maybe the new team will be good too, only one way to find out.

So many butthurts and fake fans on here. So you're not going to support your favorite character just because DC hired a new creative team? Wow. Absolutely no words. You haven't even read the issue yet. Comic fans always dismiss something without checking it out first.

I only picked this title up because I'm a fan of Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. So is it wrong if I drop the book because they are leaving?

@jonny_anonymous: Because 20~ is the point where shit gets canceled. I was using another great title that was canceled due to sales as an example.

Them changing creative teams to get more sales is actually better for fans of the character so they'll get to at least see him a little longer. If it keeps decreasing - as said - it won't reach issue 50.

DC must be trying to kill themselves this week. This, ww getting a new creatve team, deathstroke getting another series when he was already canceled and 2 new bat books that both sound horrible.

@squalleon: This seems pretty narrow-minded.

And @billy_batson

I can find a mystery, spy, action story everywhere. And some other mediums are actually more fitting for those genres than comics (at least I believe so). So no reason for me to go find a mystery, horror comic, when a book can do it much better. Again that is mine opinion and while good indie comics exist, i just prefer other forms more.

That response is irrational, truly.

What makes any genre of story better in a novel than on a comic-book page?

My experience with it. I happened to be more captivated when I read a mystery in a novel form, rather than a Tv show.
Again why is it so weird? I prefer a medium to another in terms of a genre as a general rule. I never said that I DON'T read comics because novels are better or something like that. But generally I have more fun in one medium over the other. And its not like, I dispise or don't even try comics that aren't for superheroes. And not all novels are better than comics but generally I happen to like one medium over the other.

@squalleon:

The Morrison Waid and Kelly volume.

I love Morrison's run. Pretty much what I want from a A-listers super-team. Waid's is more character driven and while it is ok, It isn't as good as Morrison's run as for Kelly I didn't really like the issues I have read to be honest.
In what format are you reading them? DC is releasing some great tpbs, they have finished Morrison's run and hey are about to enter Waid's.

This is literally the dumbest decision ever. What's next? A new team for Batman?

Frank Miller will come back and do a new story arc where Batman has to have sex with all the hookers of Gotham and goes on a murdering rampage, if time allows he'll kidnap a kid and beat him into being the next Robin, then DC will bring back Rob Liefeld to do art for Justice League and Superman will have fifty pouches so he can carry..... I don't know, super stuff.

So none of that is really happening but at this moment if it did I wouldn't be surprised.

TPB. I actually read the first arc of Morrisons and then skipped ahead to the second arc of Waids (logical isn't it?) and I must say I enjoyed Waids more (the arc about the story book magic lady....where fairy tales came to life) likely because the writing, IMO, was fantastic and the art was utterly beautiful. I found the white Martian arc to be good, not great. I found a decent amount of potholes that took me out of the story and Howard porters art is awful IMO. Making the vast majority of Morrisons run terribly tiresome to look at. Let us not forget comics are a visual medium so art is just as, if not more, important than writing. I've only peaked at Kelly's though (a few digital issues of that) and it looks okay.

Morrison became better and better down the line but its on his own I guess. I personally have no problems with Porter's art. I actually liked it. My only problem was the dark colors. And yeah Hitch's art was great and I agree that some people underestimate the power of the art in a comic. I am sure ASB&R or Superman:For Tomorrow wouldn't sell nearly that much or be as appealing to some if it wasn't for Lee.

@cheesesticks: This is a huge bummer and I'm quite disappointed about this change in the creative team. I can tell by your picture that you're a big fan of the Lemire/Sorrentino run. I do feel I should inform you that Lemire and Sorrentino will be creating the Green Arrow Futures End one-shot, as solicited by DC Comics. This does mean that there are two more issues before the new creative team comes in. So we have that going for us, which is nice.

I didn't count the Future Ends issue, because an event ties-in is usually of lesser quality than a normal issue since the editorial are more into it.

So Jeff Lemire & Andrea Sorrentino's run is ending? Man this sucks, I just read last months issue the other night. I love their run on Green Arrow. I haven't read a whole lot of Green Arrow prior to the New 52 just Quiver & Longbow Hunters, but Man I love their run on Green Arrow. Definitely one of my favorite runs of the New 52.

Man if people are upset about this creative team leaving a book, I hate to see what happens when a certain creative team from a certain best selling book decide to end their run.

DC, why would you do that to Green Arrow?

Both Marvel and DC have to accept the harsh truth...

TV/Movie audience is a different one...and they are not gonna get more readers this way...

The only thing they accomplish by doing this is pissing me off....

Keyword PAST. Keep what was in the past in the past. Like I said, if the first issue is horrible then complain all you want.

If we were keeping the past in the past then we wouldn't be reverting back to the Green Arrow of old

I'm done with DC and Marvel. I mean it this time for real. You refuse to give anyone long runs. Strictly Image and independents for me. Man this sucks. I loved that Green Arrow book.

@squalleon: Didn't say it was weird. Said it was narrow-minded. A good story is a good story. Who cares what medium its in.

Not me. My point was (follow the rest of the debate to the end for more details), that I generally prefer one medium to another depending on the genre. Because, due to my experience I happened to be more satisfied with how a medium can showcase a certain genre over another medium, of course there are exceptions but I think you get what I mean. Again see my previous posts for more details.

@jonny_anonymous: You know what I'm talking about. Keep the past in the past as in just because they didn't do very well in the past doesn't mean they won't do good now.

You do not know how hard that pouches line made me laugh. I actually approve of it, I would like to see what Superman can keep in there.
