Grant Morrison's MULTIVERSITY Is Happening

The heralded comics creator will finally have his vision for DC's Multiverse become a reality.

If you were to ask just about any comic book fan who Grant Morrison is, their answer will likely entail something about how the man is considered a sort of revolutionary in the realm of comics. The truth is, Morrison is responsible for having written many of the modern comics era's most prominent stories. He had an incredible run on ALL-STAR SUPERMAN with artist Frank Quitely as well as one of the most memorable runs on NEW X-MEN. However, there is one story that Morrison has been wanting to tell for a long time, but hasn't quite had the opportunity: MULTIVERSITY.

No Caption Provided

See, one of Morrison's great passions is DC's multiverse. If you have read read his run on Batman (BATMAN, R.I.P.) you know that Morrison is a great fan of golden age characters and concepts as well as DC's multiple universes (think Earth 2 and Jack Kirby's Orion), which is exactly what Morrison wants to touch on in this new limited series set to hit comic shop shelves sometime in late 2013. That's where MULTIVERSITY comes in.

== TEASER ==

MULTIVERSITY will be Morrison's attempt at merging the different universes that exist in DC comics together to create one story. The first look at Morrison's story premiered over the weekend at Morrisoncon in Las Vegas. There, the creator introduced his PAX AMERICANA, illustrated by Frank Quitely. which featured characters like Lady Nightshade, The Question and Captain Atom. In his story, these characters and many others will interact with one another across parallel universes via comic books.

If you’re having a war across multiple parallel realities, one way they can contact each other is to publish comic books that others can read and know what’s going on," says Morrison. "So in each parallel reality you’ll see one of them is reading the comic that you just read the month before and finding out what happend to the good guys, giving them a chance to defeat the bad guys in the next one. They are kind of passing on, in a chain, their own adventures.

The creator also revealed that the project will allow the exploration of alternate versions of popular characters like Superman and Batman. Morrison plans to "explore archetypes" in his series, and look at well known characters in different ways.

No Caption Provided

There’s something always appealing about a Russian Superman and a vampire Batman," Morrison tells Heat Vision. “It’s a different way of looking at the archetypes that we’re familiar with. And I wanted to a really massive story that would be my Lord of the Rings and it would be the best thing I’ve ever done. Whether it is, I don’t know. But I’ve certainly spent a long time on it.

The project is different for Morrison, though, because it's one he has been able to come back to again and again and one that has evolved over the years. The creator explained he has written several drafts of the same script. Since there's no deadline for the project, Morrison has been able to definitively craft the story he wants to tell. Morrison revealed this is the longest he's ever spent on a project (six years), so it's been a long time in the making.

The story will be an 8-issue long series which will consist of six-self contained one-shots and an 8-page back-up. What do you think of the idea behind MULTIVERSITY? Are you looking forward to seeing some memorable characters like The Question return to DC, albeit briefly? Is this a story you are excited to read?

Been waiting for this series for a while looking at Quitley's art is looking amazing. Even the MasterMen and The Just issues sound cool.

It seems like it's going to be structured a lot like Seven Soldiers was (only a little bit more cleanly given that they're all one shots as opposed to three issue mini-series), and I really dug the way that Seven Soldiers was structured. Plus, I'm a fan of Morrison's crazier, mind-bendy, meta stuff, so I'm down.

The longer it's taken for this to come out, the less and less I've cared. About a year ago, I decided I was just going to ignore it.

A few penciled pages and I've completely reversed myself.

Curse you Morrison/Quitely.

He actually talked quite a bit about this with Frank Quietly at Glasgow Comicon in June, although he was pretty vague on who would be in the series his ideas really sounded great. He is a great writer and i cant wait to see what he does free of the constraints of the main DC universe, also excited to see Quietly join him on the project.

I agree with you! I really liked SS and his New X-Men too. Made me more of his stuff like his classic Invisibles.

Anything multiverse is good by me, that's why I am so excited with Xtreme X-Men (yes, I am aware this page is DC centered, but it's valid)

Seeing characters in ways, technologically, emotionally, and physically that are drastically different is just up my alleyverse

@fables87: The meta stuff with the characters in one book reading the previous issue reminds me of the tail end of his Animal Man run which was just completely insane.

I am looking forward to this, sure. I love both Morrison and Quitely, and the concept is great. However, I don't feel the hype. Only a looking-forward-to-this feeling.

It seems like a good idea but 8 issues doesn't seem like enough. The concept seems interesting though.

^This. I'm sad that the Captain Carrot Universe, Earth-3, and the Jack Kirby/New Gods Universe won't get their own issues. But Pax Americana and the Freedom Fighters issues will probably make up for them. Besides, we still have the bookend issues, right?

Yes, I am excited and yes, I'm going to get this. The only miss-step I have seen from Morrison was making Xorn Magneto. His track record for stories is fantastic. They are intelligent and often thoughtful in ways that few people expect from this medium. The concept sounds excellent. I believe he will do good things with it, and having the Question included just adds to my interest. Based on this article alone, on the knowledge of the characters being included and on the writers behind the project I am excited for this.

based on those pictures it looks like they are using the Charlton characters DC bought and used in the creation of Watchmen. Maybe a more realistic take on them like Moore wanted? Probably not. Interested in finding out more about this.

Didn't you mean "Morrison is a great fan of silver age characters and concepts"? Multiple universes, New Gods, and wacky hallucinatory Batman adventures that must be locked away in the "Black Casebook," that's all from the silver age, not the golden age. Morrison has some affection for the first years of superheroes, but he's way more passionate about the mind-bending sci-fi of the silver age.

Multiversity should be enjoyable, though it sounds like a shorter version of Seven Soldiers, with more well-known characters thrown into it.

That's an alternate Captain Atom who first appeared in Final Crisis. And yeah, that's the hydrogen atom, also known as the Dr. Manhattan symbol.

What the hell is PAX AMERICANA. I'm confused. is that the same as MULTIVERSITY?

However I love alternate versions of characters, so I will definately attempt to pick this up. If it's not all gone by the time I get there.
