'Gotham' TV Show to Include Popular Characters

A Fox executive says quite a few familiar faces will appear and even names a few.

James Gordon's show on Fox is still some time away, but Kevin Reilly, the Fox Entertainment Chaiman, has released some very interesting bits of info during a press tour. We know the show will revolve around James Gordon's life before Bruce Wayne becomes Batman, but Reilly said the show will not include "a bunch of characters you've never heard of." Instead, he says we'll see "all the characters you know, Bruce Wayne, the Penguin, all of them. It's Gotham teetering on the edge, and we see what makes these characters become who they are, [like] Catwoman. It's an operatic soap that has a slightly larger-than-life quality to it."

No Caption Provided

Reilly also teased we'll see Wayne put on the cowl at "the end of the series." Gotham will "staff up" in February and go "into script right after that." The Mentalist's Bruno Heller will serve as the executive producer.

Viners, are you stoked for Gotham?

With Commissioner Gordon being here, can we also get Chief O' Hara? Gordon could use some friends.

@muyjingo: I am a little weirded out by a show about a young Bruce Wayne that takes place in Gotham. I thought he was supposed to be in Japan and training with various martial artist, magicians and such. If it is done right, this could be the new Smallville. Or it could be Birds of Prey.

Yeah...it doesn't make much sense. He was away for several years and presumed dead IIRC. But, they might be able to make it work.

Law and Order: GCPD?

I'll check it out and hope its good, but I find that their are already planning their "final episode" with Batman donning his cowl a bit fatalistic. Either that or maybe they are only planning a short term show that'll run for a season or two? Who knows, probably just trying to drum up interest.

If they're really set on doing the Joker, then I hope it's at the end of the series. Sort of like his origin and Bruce's donning the cowl close of the series.

Shoot, and miss again. I'll keep an open mind, maybe that was a joke, but this is an early indication that the people in charge of this have no idea what they are doing. Here I was hoping that it being on Fox would remove the CW feel...

@doctorxander: don't say that or people will freak that was a terrible penguin. He acted like the burton one. People need to understand that he is a business man and civilised not some loud and dirty British thug stereotype. The closest outside if comics is a tie of the second version in BTAS and the 69s show. Darker dies not mean better.

It's a wonder that any comic book characters are adapted onto screen given the sheer amount of animosity and negativity that fans display to these sorts of announcements.

I'm stoked.

Now as much as i love the idea of a series following the journey of Jim Gordon moving from Detective to Lt or commissioner in a mob ruled crazy Gotham (with the Bruce story moving in the background) i am worried that this might fall into the samllville trap (and just to get it out there, i did like smallville but i also thought that they draged the premise out way to long to the point where you were turning in for the new guest heroes rather than clark). I like to think, as many do, that the batman rouges are a criminal responce to batman, and thus most of their origins (joker, riddler, two-face etc.) take place after Bruce dons the cowl. Im also worried about this post about catwoman as in an article on bleeding cool they said that Bruce, in the first season, was going to be 12, so how old are the other characters going to be in this series? I'm not trying to be negative with the series and i am looking forward to it, but its the usual fan-boy worry that the re-adaption of these characters to the small screen won't be good.

Now talking of batman tv-shows i always thought that just making a new batman series (not an origin series) would be great. The first season, set right after Bruce returns to Gotham, could see Bruce building up the batcave, making his first appearance as batman in a prototype costume, fighting the mob families, the penguins cartels and the red-hood gang (season finale could be the infamous battle between batman and red hood 1 at the acid factory) while also building up trust (as Bruce and Batman) with Gordon and Harvey Dent. I mean after what Arrow's done (playing both the island origin story alongside the hero's journey) i though it'd be a great thing.

I really wish we could have an HBO show chronicling Bruce's training around the world instead.

But cautiously optimistic for this.

To be honest, I am excited for another Batman tv show. But I would so much rather see Bruce train around the world and build up to Batman, oh so slowly. Its such an interesting story that has hardly been fleshed out. The journey to becoming the bat....

Yup. WB owns HBO as well, so I don't know why they don't take advantage of that.

But then, look at how mismanaged their movie universe is, so it's not a surprise.

@hexthis:

Except TV shows are not Netflix's only product. And given that they aren't releasing viewership numbers for their shows, its pretty safe to say they're not as impressive as you are trying to make it sound.

And considering you yourself said ratings determine probably 50% of perceived quality, it means you can't anoint them anything.

So again. Just because Netflix has 2 good shows ever in its history doesn't automatically make any thing they do a success, so to claim DD is going to be one is blind faith - especially when they - like everyone else has put out bad shows too. Of this I can attest to personally.

And to keep using your comparison of Game of Thrones and Walking Dead - those two shows are talked about way more than any Netflix show if you ask me. Both in my personal experiences and on the internet. So again, Netflix still doesn't compare to HBO or AMC if you ask me and until you actually see a show, there's no guarantee of anything. And HBO and AMC have probably half a dozen shows in the last 5 years that are all good or better than House of Cards on a view/rating level.

And to your point about binging...binging isn't healthy. Because people will buy a sub for 1 month, watch what they want and drop it. I have in the past on Netflix in fact. Whereas TV networks get sustained viewership over months, which allows them to introduce you to many other things.

Agree to disagree I guess. But I hardly see Netflix as some kind of revolution you're making it out to be. And if we're using AoS as Marvel's only example of TV, then I'm not all that optimistic until I see it and am proved otherwise.

Its not a Batman show. Its a Gotham PD show. And networks like that have had successful copshows for a while.

Batman will never make an appearance, of that I can assure you. They might strut a little kid called Bruce in during the pilot and make make some vague references to a vigilante but the word Batman will never be used. Not when they can pretty much get instant profits at a theater for a Batman movie

They said explicitly that they will not put on a show with characters we've never heard of and cited two of the most iconic Batman characters- Catwoman and Penguin. It's a part of the Batman mythos which is familiar to most of the public. Jim Gordon and Catwoman were both featured in Batman movies that amassed hundreds of millions of dollars recently and even before that, people identify both characters as being directly involved with Batman. So Batman doesn't even have to be in it for it to be a show taking place in the massive Batman franchise. He's the thread that ties all of it together. It's a cop show....with Batman's supervillains.

With regards to your remarks about "Game of Thrones" and "Walking Dead", it's not even just critics that make these hits. "Game of Thrones" had upwards of 5 million viewers last year, numbers that skyrocketed as the show got older which doesn't happen very often. Same with "Walking Dead" only it's twice that in the ratings department, more than three times that even for the most recent season premiere which attracted 16.11 viewers. Do ratings determine quality? Not necessarily. Do critics? Not necessarily either. But a marriage between the two seems to indicate a degree of quality to me.

The channel does matter, hugely. Networks can make outrageous revisions to shows and censor them up the wazoo. People are wandering off them when it comes to dramas, almost all cable shows get nominated for Emmys, Golden Globes every year. Comedies? Those do well on network but when it comes to dramas, they're losing out majorly. It's almost pathetic.

Netflix is going to be major. It's caught on like wildfire, people binge on shows on Netflix and they capitalized on it by formatting their own shows to that customer experience. "House of Cards" is a big deal and so is "Orange is the New Black" and they have a total edge on even cable because it's instant gratification. Netflix is flourishing.

Bruce will put on the cape and cowl at the end of the series? How long do they expect this show to go on for if they're already teasing the end of the series. This could last 2 seasons or it could last 10. Something smells fishy.

Other than that...AWESOME SAUCE!!!!!!!!!

DC also has Constantine, Hourman and Flash before Marvel announced their shows too.

DD is Marvel counter to those announcements.

DC is pretty ahead of the game, actually.

And considering HBO is owned by TimeWarner, I don't know what Game of Thrones is used against them in your argument either.

Hourman and Constantine are on network television and my whole argument was that DC should avoid it at all costs. Constantine is going to be on NBC which is an absolute trainwreck of a station these days, it's one of the most horribly managed of any major network if not the most horribly managed network. Do you remember their last superhero show? The Cape? And with CW? No offense to "Arrow" fans, won't produce anything any more riveting. Everything is sanitized and censored on network television and something that has such potential as Batman, which can be very dark and twisted, will not meet it's full potential in that environment.

Preacher? That might be good. AMC clearly knows what their doing when it comes to that genre BUT Batman is much more representative of their brand. He should be going where the action is like the Preacher is whom most people won't even identify with DC since he's much lesser known.

My point about Arrow vs Game of Thrones or Walking Dead was basically that both those shows stomp it in a millisecond. Ratings-wise and as far as critical praise goes as well and it has nothing to do with TimeWarner. They own the intellectual property, that's it. When it's handed off to a network who hires producers, writers, and actors- that's when you see a difference creatively.

And have you seen Arrow? Because its pretty damn good.

I personally think Walking Dead is vastly overrated. Is it good? Yes. But it does not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Game of Thrones like you keep using it either. I don't really care what critics have to say about anything really.

Game of Thrones also happens to be one of the most expensive TV shows of all time. Each episode costs something like 5 million dollars. So to expect that is unrealistic. Its a lot easier to get better talent and writing with that kind of budget.

I also don't really see why you think Netflix is superior. I've seen a couple of their shows. I watched Hemlock Grove last year when I had a free trial and it left much to be desired. Its not like DD is a sure thing by any stretch of the imagination, just because its on Netflix.

So I guess my point is...the Network makes it almost irrelevant. Every TV channel has produced gems and has produced crap. Until we see something...no one can say how its going to be.

But until I see it, its just another cop show.

@hexthis said:

No! WAIT! Marvel has Daredevil on Netflix (the future of TV), DC needs to counter that with an equally adult show on AMC or A&E or something. Putting a gritty crime drama on network TV is a BIG mistake these days because anyone can see real grit in something like "Luthor" or "The Wire" done 10 times better. You can argue "Arrow" is a good case for why I'm wrong (if you think it's actually any good) BUT is "Arrow" better than "Walking Dead" or "Game of Thrones"? Not even a contest. The cable networks have more liberties, they hire actual talent, get all the up and coming writers! HBO or something like that! Actually, a Batman show would be less expensive than either "Walking Dead" or "Game of Thrones" because they could get away with minimal special effects and sets.

Bad, bad, bad idea. They need to be ahead of the game. This is not 2003, "24" and "American Idol" are not there to draw interest. AH! I hope the plan falls through.

It's going to be tough for this show IMO. Just like with Agents people will want to see the big time players not the police force. Plus Fox is known for having unrealistic expectations so if this show stumbles in its first season it will be cancelled.
