GODZILLA Returns

Stomping a city near you.

No guarantees over whether the giant samurai demon is attached, as well.

Before I tell you anything about Legendary Pictures' plans to make a new GODZILLA movie for 2012, I want to say that, even ten years after the term’s been coined, “re-imagining” has to be one of the most ridiculous examples of double-speak in the English language. I’m not knocking the film one bit - - it could be sense-shattering sensational - - but can we call it what it is? The same way that a “pre-owned vehicle” is still a used car, a re-imagining is still the same as a remake. Sure,  the crew might have taken the concept in a completely different direction and put a lot of their own imagination into it. Then it’s what you call a loose remake.

Anyway, I bring that up because Legendary has announced their plans to give the giant atomic lizard another shot at big screen urban destruction. There’s really not much else to be said about that, aside from the fact that there’s apparently going to be a simultaneous Japanese revival that’ll include 40-minute 3D Imax movie. Audiences will feel like they, themselves, are getting crushed under a big scalely foot.

It’s been about 12 years since that awful American version which, despite critics and audiences’ dislike, managed to gross something around $400 million worldwide. That flick’s landed in my select category of “bad movie, good theme song” along with flicks like WILD WILD WEST, as Diddy sampling Led Zepplin while having a dance-off with the big lizard will always appeal to me.  Even though Legendary asserts this will have no relation to the ’98 movie, I’m sure this remake’s going to have its own torrent of media tie-ins, from comic adaptations to video games to big slurpee cups.

I suppose the only question now, goes to you, the radioactively-mutated Comic Vine community. Would you prefer to well-rendered CGI Godzilla or man-in-rubber-suit Godzilla for this? Would you hope for an eventual crossover with CLOVERFIELD, perhaps?  And how many of you would ACTUALLY want to see Godzookey in this?

Oh my god Godzooky!!!!!!   I haven't thought of that in so damn long.  Man you always know how to make me feel old.  Pretty soon you'll have a picture of yourself holding your arms up in an X with the palms out yelling. "SPECTER MAN"

I am a huge Godzilla fan. I wouldlove to see the old Toho Type films again.  CGI is cool but it lacks fun of the models and suit.

Hmmm, "loose remake" does have less letters then "re-imagination" but I still prefer the latter.   I've never liked the word remake because I always felt it implied a lack of originality.   Re-imagination at least implies that an old idea is being taken in a new direction.   I do see why you might not like the word though.   It's probably going to become a meaningless buzzword like "green" and "innovative".

And I wouldn't mind seeing that image on the big screen.   IMO that demon looks like an Orc/Ork from the Warhammer franchises and I'd like to see Godzilla fight against a green wave of Waaaaghh!

FINALLY. I hope that  this new one won't be like the 1998 one with Matthew Broderick. Also better enemy monsters....

Have to agree!
Although I think they will probably go the CGI route and if they do, it is done in a way that resembles the original Godzilla instead of the crap version that Mr. Pinchuk mentioned.  (the bad acting alone in that movie plus Godzilla "hiding" in the city--yeah..)

Just as long as they play the kick-a$$ theme song by Blue Oyster Cult it will be great.  Wait, some of you don't know Blue Oyster Cult?  What am I saying...well just watch and listen....

Gotta love Godzilla!

I've been a huge Godzilla fan since I was a kid.
It's about time he had a comeback!

no thoughts until trailer. i dont feel the first US remake can be used as
any kind of measuring stick since this isnt the same film one way or another.

is the 10 year break over already?

Part of me wants this, the other part of me is cringing because of the amount of time I used to spend watching these movies as a child and how god-sodding-awful most of them are now (with the exception of the Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla and to a lesser extent the one with Ghidorah, that wierd mantis armed one fighting Godzilla and the big armadillo whose name I cannot spell fighting in a theme park). So long as it has Godzilla fighting something equally big and destructive the movie may turn out ok. Got to say, I don't want another bloody cloverfield type abomination

You can't stop the King of Monsters baby !!

I miss the old days when they use to play his movies on Saturday's on USA or on TNT / TBS.

I hope the movie they make contains at least 90 minutes of solid monster fighting/model landscape destruction. If you haven't watched a Daikaiju movie in full since you were a kid, you probably have a rosy picture of how exciting they are, when for the most part they are terminally boring, stuffed with stupid and wooden human characters engaging in stupid and wooden dialog for 8/10ths of the movie. The newer films, like Final Wars and Tokyo SOS (I think, I can't remember if that's the one I'm thinking of or not) are much better in this regard.

They should keep the original score, but update it.

There are three types of Godzilla fans.

1) Kids who just think the monsters are awesome and don't see them as "effects."

2) Grownups who loved the films as kids, but are embarrassed when their less imaginative friends point out it's a guy in a rubber suit. So they try to play it off like the "cheesiness" (which they didn't notice as kids) is the "whole point."

3) Grownups who couldn't care less what their less imaginative friends think, but still have a grownup eye for detail. They want to see as convincing a monster as possible so they can let go of their skepticism for an hour or so and embrace that sense of wonder that came so easily when they were children.

Costumes and miniatures reached their limit in simulation and expressiveness a long time ago. The CGI Godzilla of "Always 2" was more expressive and convincing as an animal in his 15 seconds on screen than most rubber-suit Godzillas are in entire films.

But if another American company is going to take a stab at it, they had damn well better actually cast Godzilla (upright, radioactive, invulnerable, unstoppable) in the lead role.
