'Glee' Actor Cast as the Flash in upcoming Episodes of 'Arrow'

Will these appearances lead into a spin-off show?

You've likely heard the announcement that Barry Allen will be speeding his way to visit Ollie on upcoming episodes of Arrow on the CW. The word was this could lead into a spin-off show based on the Flash.

Today Warner Bros. has announced they've found their Flash. Grant Gustin has been cast and will appear in episodes 208, 209 and 220 of Arrow.

No Caption Provided

The questions are, what will this version of Barry be like? Also, what will his costume, if any, look like?

Warner Bros has included this description of Barry which lets us know what their take will likely be:

BARRY ALLEN is a Central City assistant police forensic investigator who arrives in Starling to look into a series of unexplained robberies that may have a connection to a tragedy in his past. A comic book fan boy, Barry is obsessed with the Arrow unaware that working with Oliver and Felicity to solve the crime has brought him right into the dangerous world of the vigilante.

What do you think?

Arrow returns for a second season on Wednesday, October 9, at 8:00 p.m. EST/PST on the CW.

I like how people complain about Flash being too young compared to Cavill's Superman and Affleck's Batman, yet people who complain about Cyborg being treated like a teenager in the New 52 when he is the same age as Wonder Woman and in his 20s have their complaints fall on deaf ears.

Good to see the hypocrisy. It makes me warm inside. I chuckle at your pain.

I'm afraid I don't understand your comments about Cyborg. How is he treated like a teenager in the New 52? It seems to me that despite him once again being a teenager, he is treated less like a teenager than ever as he is a crucial part of the Justice League (that's THE JUSTICE LEAGUE) instead of a Teen Titans character. Furthermore, how is he the same age as Wonder Woman? Isn't Wonder Woman some timeless immortal? I get that she isn't as old as the other Amazons, but since they've pretty much always existed Diana could've been 'born' at any time after that. Heck, could've been BCE. Couldn't it?

Wonder Woman is 23.

No Caption Provided

Cyborg is also 23, since 5 years ago he was 18.

http://www.comicvine.com/justice-league-of-america/4060-31815/forums/the-official-ages-of-the-members-of-the-justice-le-681506/

Despite being the same age and Superman only being 5 years older than those 2, Cyborg is treated like a child. Green Lantern calls him "kid," Batman treats him like a child he babysits and talks to his father like he is a kid. And Geoff Johns is trying to pair him up with a 12 year old kid for a friend. That's really lame.

I'd rather have a character on the team who is treated as an adult--like John Stewart.

Arrow's a pretty good series so far, they better not run it to the ground with the introduction of Flash.

Why didn't they just make him Bart or Wally? At least SM used Bart as an excuse to make him so young. Even though they didn't have to since they made the entire cast young.

Even if he's 'young' Barry, I was still hoping for someone who looks closer to Oliver's age, who I'm assuming is being portrayed as much younger than the comics, rather someone close to Roy's age. Because that's what he looks..like he'd be on TT with Colton.

i have the odd feeling that this version of barry, being a young cop who is also a comic book geek, might be arrows version of (hopefully) chloe from smallville....probs not but i just got that sort of vibe from it

Very excited about this :) Grant was one of my favorites when I actually watched Glee, and I think I've seen him other places that I enjoyed him.

I understand what you're saying, but at least for the first phase they seemed to go with more of an Ultimate-esque story arc than with "regular" Marvel-esque things. So it makes sense. And also, if you have a parallel version of a character you are trying to adapt for film...who's looks are LITERALLY based off of an actor that is totally willing to play the role...why wouldn't you adapt it to that version than the "regular" version?

And yes. I don't have any issues with the Flash actor. He looks a bit like that pop bullshit we've been seeing become popular lately (kind of like Justin Bieber or however you spell it) but I have faith that the Arrow guys have picked a good one. They haven't let me down thusfar. (John Barrowman!!! GENIUS!!)

I think we're referring to two different concepts. You're referring to an updated version and arc of the character, I'm referring to the original look of the character. ;)

One of my closest friends is a HUGE Marvel fan, and even he said "ok at first why Sam for Nick Fury"? He kind of lives with it but he would have preferred a more accurate comic looking actor...

As for Flash, I'd prefer someone like Chris Pine personally but it's obvious the're going after a more younger Flash at least look wise. But I'm sure he'll do well or decent. I thought Kyle Gallner did a great job as Kid Flash on Smallville.

Ummm... Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury is perfect. Ultimate Nick Fury's look is literally based off of Samuel L. Jackson.

I never said he did a bad job, I said they changed the casting entirely being as how he was a white older guy with grey hair in the comic, yet in the movie version they got a younger bald black actor to play the roll. That's ultimate, nick fury prior to that looked entirely different...

So people shouldn't have an issue with the glee guy, put a few streaks in his hair and bam...Barry Allen....but glad to see guys like you are behind the idea at least. I think people bashing the poor guy cause he was on glee or hair isn't blond enough is kind of ridiculous to me.

It's funny you mention him, just watching Unstoppable and he would SOO be a deadringer for Flash. I can get by that idea ;)

I didn't think they would go for a superpowered theme universe, thought they would keep it as "realistic" as possible like Nolan's Batman. Interesting development!

Barry Allen is awesome and it's great that he's alive.

Uh huh, OK, Geoff. Whatever you say.

How am I Goeff Johns just for saying I like Barry being back? I'm sorry we all don't have the same opinion as you.

Because there's no reason to want Barry back other than buying into the garbage that Johns has been pushing since Rebirth and his Flash run.

I understand that you want Wally West but is it wrong that I liked Barry even before Johns's stuff?

No, of course not. I liked Barry too (though not in Johns stuff).

It's wrong to want him back. He served his purpose well, and he was given a perfect send-off. He has no reason to exist any more. His stories are done. His relevance as a character is over. He won't evolve, and he'll stay stagnant for the foreseeable future. He is simply a remnant now.

Would you be happy if both Barry and Wally were the Flash?

I was happy when Wally was going to get a new identity. He didn't even have to be Flash, and it was fine.

To replace a character like Wally with a remnant like Barry was simply an awful decision made by an idiotic manchild.

Agreed. Wally is the superior Flash

I don't have anything to contribute. I just like the 3D looking tunnels that CV makes when you quote people. I just want to see it grow some more.

@g_man: But that's what I'm saying - - they kind of have to mention "The Flash" in the news releases to make everyone excited that "The Flash" might be zipping around in Star City. But I haven't seen anything that really says he will be there as anyone other than Barry Allan.

@komickev said:

I've only read a couple articles about this. Is the FLASH going to be appearing or will it only be BARRY ALLEN? Will it be the Allen character BEFORE he becomes the flash? Will they mention a speedster hero being seen in the world before he actually appears in episode 8? I'm guessing if it is the Flash that we won't see anything near the traditional costume from the comics. I love Arrow so regardless, it doesn't matter to me one way or the other. When is what's-his-name (from Teen Wolf) going to become Arsenal (since the name "Speedy" has already been taken)?

I got this news directly from Warner Bros. The email they sent me had the subject "THE FLASH Casting News." They also included this wording:

We’re excited to announce that Grant Gustin has been set in the role of Barry Allen (aka The Flash).

If they were only casting Barry and not Flash, I don't think they'd mention him in the text and subject. Although, since Ollie isn't called Green Arrow, would anyone call Barry The Flash. Also, who knows if he'd even get powers right away. They might just introduce the character and either give him powers in his third appearance or try doing a separate pilot.

I dunno about this. I feel like the show so far was trying to make it similar to a Nolanverse type of thing, where everybody is just extremely skilled and there are no superpowers. Take Deathstroke for example. He's got no super-soldier serum. And Count Vertigo was a drug dealer rather than some oddly-dressed dude who messes with your mind. But now all of the sudden they're introducing Flash, who is insanely powerful? Doesn't seem right. But I guess we'll see how it turns out.

I always thought of Barry as the original Justice League flash, and Wally as Grayson's buddy. Never really liked the idea of Wally being on the JL with Bruce and Clark and Barry non existence. Just my opinion.

Exactly.

I think he'll be great but if this is the guy who is going to potentially move over into a Justice League movie where Affleck's Batman is going to be an experienced, grizzly Batman. Surely they should all be at similar places in their hero careers? Why don't they just cast Betty White as Wonder Woman and cover the whole age spectrum?

Hey hey hey to all you people saying "Woah what they're having the Flash on Arrow??" they announced this like two months ago. Like around SDCC time. And honestly my thoughts on the matter are the following: WHO GIVES A FUCK. WE'RE GETTING THE FLASH ON ARROW.
