I have a feeling there will be some people happy about this along with a lot that will be very concerned.  Variety has announced that DreamWorks is planning to make a live-action 3-D movie out of the manga/anime Ghost In The Shell.  It has been over a year since DreamWork first made plans on adapting the franchise.  Now it is finally moving forward.

Ghost In The Shell was first published in 1989.  There has been a couple manga volumes, three anime films, video games, a couple comic book series as well as an anime TV series.  The premise is:

In the 21st century, the line between man and machine has become increasingly blurred as humanity must rely on the enhancement of mechanical implants, and robots are upgraded with human tissue. This is the story of cyborg super-agent Motoko Kusanagi, whose mission is to track down the most dangerous terrorists in cyber-crime, including "ghost hackers" capable of exploiting the human/machine interface by re-programming human minds to become puppets they can use towards criminal ends.

Laeta Kalogridis has been hired to adapt the project while Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul (of Seaside Entertainment) are attached to produce.

Ghost In The Shell is a beloved series.  Personnally I'm a little scared over this.  I'd hate to see this come out as a disaster.  What are your thoughts on this project?  Have you seen/read Ghost In The Shell?  I know we're talking about DreamWorks but there's always the chance of this coming out poorly.  I suppose I should just hope for the best.
