Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr reported as New SUPERMAN Creative Team [Update]

Apparently the word leaked out before the official announcement.

It seems there aren't many secrets left in the world of comics. While we're still waiting for the official announcement from DC, which was teased yesterday on DC's site and YouTube channel. In the video, we saw Dan DiDio and Geoff Johns mention a "major announcement" coming but the video is cut short. Bleeding Cool reported that it is Geoff Johns and John Romita Jr on SUPERMAN.

No Caption Provided

The site even had screenshots of Romita Jr talking to DiDio and Johns. We'll update when DC officially confirms and gives more details.

Update

It's been officially confirmed/announced on DC All Access. They will be the creative team on SUPERMAN this summer.

No Caption Provided

Geoff Johns: "We've been talking about Superman now for quite a while and it's going to be a blast."

John Romita Jr: "This is going to be interesting. Very interesting. I'm actually a little intimidated seeing how many great artists have done his images before. This is not an easy thing to sail smoothly through."

I can live with Romita, because Lodell is getting off of that book. Johns is a genius.

@lvenger: Really? Maybe it is the lack of colors, personally I think it is pretty clear and the hit is so intense.

@night_thrasher: His recent layouts haven't been good at all. Why expect anything different?

@squalleon: Eh bit hard to see what's going on. Too flashy to follow lol.

Im really trying to think of something good that came out from Lobdell's run, there is actually nothing. this is good news

Good feats and in the right hands H'el can be pretty boss. (although I enjoyed his H'el arc too)

@lvenger: @squalleon: Lee is more detailed. And does the "interior cover" better than just about anybody. Romita has better layouts.

awful. romita's art is completely NOT appropriate for this character. Superman has never looked uglier or less iconic. romita's style is too suited for underdog characters and indie books. not at all good for an iconic character like Sm.

and DC really needs to find more talented writers. Geoff makes money but he can't be the only writer they call on to generate some revenue. enough with pandering to 13yos please.

Actually when Forever Evil ends Johns will only be writing two books including this one.

I am very happy about this because ANYTHING (for the exception of Rob Liefeld) would be better than what we've been getting with Lobdell!! That being said, I am very nervous about JRjr. On that picture alone, the borders of the "S" crest are too thick and the seams of the costumes too deep. I just hope that there will be good art editing going on in this book. A good art editor that will remind JRjr "Is the best you can do, or are you just phoning it in today?" I think that when JRjr tries, he can be really good. But when he's bad, he's really bad.

Should be an interesting mix. Johns writes a good story line, it can get a bit convoluted at times, but keep it interesting enough to keep you coming back.

Team that with JRJR absolutely putrid attempt at 'art'.

Can JRJR near complete lack of talent trump Johns' story writing. Only time will tell.

@squalleon:

  1. His Amazing stuff is really good, I won't deny that. It's just his current work lacks the creative spark that made his Spider-Man stuff so good.
  2. And my opinion on the matter remains the same too, I've been a defender of Lee's art for some time.
  3. And I can imagine a cluttered and incoherent Romita Jr page without getting a real gist of what's going on.
  4. Seriously? I mean you're seriously claiming Romita Jr does better action sequences than Jim Lee? Let me know when Romita Jr does a fight scene this good

As you wish then.

  1. @lvenger: The last Romita story I read is his and JMS's ASM so I am talking with that as a reference. I haven't read anything current of his to judge.
  2. I don't downplay Lee's art, this was always my opinion on him and I have repeatedly express it here on the vine.
  3. And Lee's Layouts aren't all the same? I can picture you a simple Jim Lee layout without even looking at a book(I really do :-P).
  4. Please Romita's action sequences are definetely better. Lee's action sequences are static. Romita's action scenes are fluid and they usually have more creativity behind them. Jim Lee the artistic king of action sequences? I can list a good number of artists better than him.

I guess we can agree to disagree then. Like you I would take Lee over Romita but that's because I like Lee's style I don't think he is better than Romita.

@squalleon: Come now Jim Lee's art is much more versatile and dynamic than Romita Jr's has ever been. That's lowballing Lee's work to suit your own argument which doesn't stand up when you compare their best works respectively. And thanks for the interview but I've read it already and no my worries are not eased at all. At least it'll be better than Lobdell currently.

Lvenger like Romita, Lee's characters look the same. Unlike Romita, his characters have only three expressions, his layouts lack imagination and his action scenes are completely static. His only strenght are pin-ups and two page spreads that showcases his detailed art. Is his art beautifull to look at sure, is it versalite and dynamic definitely NO.

If we compare storytelling abilities of these two based on their best works be sure that Romita will win. Lee's art is more beautiful but that's it.

See I have to disagree here. I flicked through World War Hulk today at a book store and let me tell you, your criticisms about Lee are insignificant compared to what's wrong with Romita's current artwork. His pencils are incredibly messy, his layouts are all the same and if you're talking about action sequences, they're awkwardly portrayed and are completely devoid of any decent layouts in all honesty. By contrast, Lee's pencils are nowhere near as messy even in Unchained, his layouts are incredibly well detailed and laid out and if you're talking action sequences, Lee is the artistic king of those hands down. Romita Jr has never drawn a more epic fight scene than Lee has, I can assert that with total certainty.

Thus I don't agree with your conclusion as I find Lee to be a much better storyteller in the superior and more dynamic layout of his artwork as well as outclassing Romita Jr in sheer artistic talent. You're overrating and overplaying how good Romita Jr's style is when he lost his quality years ago whereas Lee's artwork is still fresher and engaging than ever. That's my stance on it.

The funny thing is I used to love JRJR. I loved his work when he was on Amazing Spider-Man with JMS and Wolverine. But now I can't stand the guy's work. His art looks so rushed and inconstant these days.

@lvenger: Well my point with aquaman ( and even Green Lantern ) still stands. They have all been portrayed stupid in JL/A while he has given them all good portrayals in their own books.

There's no guarantee Johns will extend that same courtesy to Superman based on initial interviews so it only stands shakiliy.

Romita working at DC? That is literally something I never expected. Good for DC for coming out with a huge surprise. That black/white inked version looks absolutely beautiful, I always thought that Romita was the one guy that perfectly fit Dean White's style, but I think I would actually like to see someone else do coloring for him.

@tigerkaya: Johns didn't write Superman: Earth One. He wrote Batman: Earth One, which I really enjoyed. I didn't like Superman: Earth One either, but it wasn't Johns. It was J. Michael Straczynski.

Great to see John's writing Superman again, I really loved his run on Action.

As for Romita, I am 50/50 about him, I've liked a lot of his art in the past but I have disliked a lot too. I'm not too keen on the pictures of Superman released so far but I will withhold my judgement until I see more.

My wish came true...Geoff Johns is back on Superman. Dreams do come true!

When this was still a rumor i wasn't too sure about Romita jr. cause i don't hate it but im not a fan of his art, but i liked his ASM run and, this just isn't a deal breaker for me, Geoff Johns on Superman!!! The man revitalizes everything he touches. This is the late 75th anniversary present that we Super fans get and i can't be happier.
