Four Reasons Why Sinestro is the Most Powerful Green Lantern [Spoilers]

In just three issues, we've seen Sinestro prove he can use the green power ring better than anyone else, even Hal Jordan.

When people think about who the best Green Lantern is, they'll immediately go to Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner or even Guy Gardner. Kilowog fans might even chime in and express how much he's added to the Corps. It turns out out there just might be another.

For three months now we've been seeing Sinestro back in action as a Green Lantern. In a move no one expected, Sinestro was chosen to be the bearer of a green power ring at the end of War of the Green Lanterns. At the same time, Hal Jordan was deemed unworthy of wearing his ring after killing the rogue Guardian, Krona.

Allowed to go off on his own to protect a sector in space, Sinestro appears to have his own agenda. With his planet of Korugar under the control of the Sinestro Corps, he has sought out Hal Jordan on Earth in order to recruit him to join his fight. While doing so, Sinestro is revealing that he knows more about the green power ring and the Green Lantern Corps than everyone else. How many other secrets about the ring is he aware of? (Warning: there will be some spoilers from GREEN LANTERN #3).

== TEASER ==

Creating Other Rings

No Caption Provided

This is something we've seen before. Kyle Rayner, the Green Lantern rookie for a time, was able to create a ring for Jade before. His ring had different properties since he was the only Lantern at the time. The fact that the ring had that power leads you to believe it is still there and not necessarily added when Ganthet gave Kyle the ring.

In order to enlist Hal, Sinestro created a ring for him. We have to assume that the other Lanterns are not able to access this ability. If they could, why has Hal been stuck de-powered on Earth when John, Guy or Kyle could have easily created a replacement ring for Hal?

Sinestro was able to create a ring while not causing his own to lose its own power. We have to believe that he actually did create a separate ring and not just the illusion of one in order to trick Hal. There would be no point in that as Sinestro needs Hal's help and skills to liberate his planet. If he had to be consciously aware of Hal's ring at all time, that would only divide his attention and will when trying to control his own ring.

Saving the Day With No Effort

No Caption Provided

In the second issue, several lives were endangered by a collapsing bridge. Hal did what he always does and swooped down to try to save as many lives as possible. The problem was, Hal can be a little narrow minded when it comes to saving lives. He went after a single person at a time (of course it was an attractive female) while several other were still at risk.

As Hal scurried around, trying to save as many lives as possible, Sinestro did what Hal never thought he could do, he surprised and impressed him with minimal effort

Again, Sinestro showed the level of control he possesses over his ring. As great and powerful of a Green Lantern Hal has been, he was not able to use his power to the level that Sinestro demonstrated.

Taking on the Entire Sinestro Corps

No Caption Provided

While we had the Sinestro Corps War, it took several Green Lanterns to keep the fight balanced. Sinestro is willing to take on over two hundred and twenty members to give Hal an opportunity to do his part of Sinestro's plan. Sinestro may have created his Corps but they all possess the power to stand up to Green Lanterns and others.

Turning the Green to Black

No Caption Provided

What does this mean? When Sinestro and Hal have to quietly make their way down to Korugar, Sinestro tells Hal to dim his light and turn the green to black. Being able to change their color is a crazy idea. All the different Corps have been centered and focused on their particular color. Could there be something more to this than simply darkening the green?

This also illustrates that Sinestro knows more than the other Lanterns. Hal asks him how come no other Lantern has shown him how to do this. Sinestro simply replies that the Guardians don't like them knowing everything the ring can do.

In other words, there could be a lot more the ring is capable of without the Green Lantern Corps having any knowledge of it. In the coming months, we just might discover even more abilities Sinestro is aware of. There's also the Lantern/power battery. Who knows what other things could be done with that. Sinestro is a force to be reckoned with. We'll have to wait and see if he remains a Green Lantern and what that will mean for the rest of the Corps. This all proves just how powerful and great a Green Lantern Sinestro truly is.

Okay, why are we hyping Sinetro?

Kyle Rayner, the Green Lantern rookie for a time, was able to create a ring for Jade before. His ring had different properties since he was the only Lantern at the time. The fact that the ring had that power leads you to believe it is still there and not necessarily added when Ganthet gave Kyle the ring.

Kyle's ring  was never capable of creating other rings. Hal's was. A time travelling Hal Jordan gave Kyle a duplicate of his ring. That ring could create new ones.

In other words, there could be a lot more the ring is capable of without the Green Lantern Corps having any knowledge of it.

With all the stuff that Sinestro (and Hal) have done can you blame the guardians for not telling the corps?

What does this mean? When Sinestro and Hal have to quietly make their way down to Korugar, Sinestro tells Hal to dim his light and turn the green to black. Being able to change their color is a crazy idea.

That means Sinestro knows what Kyle Rayner found out on the very first day as GL:
How to alter your own costume.

I don't think he's more powerful. Hal's thing is being the most powerful because of his enormous willpower. Sinestro seems to me to just know what he's doing. He's far more knowledgeable and skilled because he takes things seriously. For example, with him saving people on the bridge effortlessly, Hal could have done the same, but he's too busy hotdogging and being the hero everyone sees instead of dealing with the problem. He doesn't do things as well because he thinks about everything differently, and since the ring makes what you think reality, the way you think is important. With changing the color of his light, Hal could do it the instant he thought about it. It's not like it was beyond his ability, just beyond his scope of knowledge. And Sinestro has always been the best, don't get it twisted.

Well said Buckshot...

Green Lanterns have been dishing out ridiculous feats for decades, just because sinestro is doing these few knowledge based stuff doesn't mean he wipes out all the others in terms of power and skill. No lie is it probably the most disciplined member of the corps.

The one and only reason he is so powerful is the Errol Flynn mustache.

I think I am totally impressed with the way this series is going so far. It has peaked my interest enough to put it on my pull list.

Let's not forget that Kilowog can create molecules and we've seen him regrow an entire planet's ecosystem which shocked Kyle Rayner.

While I think the portrayal of Sinestro being able to manipulate his ring's abilities to such an extent is appropriate to his character, I do wish the writers would make Hal a bit better at the same actions that Sinestro took to save the people on the bridge. This should be within Hal's realm of accomplishment (given comments from Emerald Dawn and other earlier arcs where Hal comments on how he uses his ring and energies exactly as necessary for the situation) even if he can't create an independent ring or knew about changing his costume to black (which by the way seems heavily inspired by the Young Justice cartoon.....just saying).

I alluded to this already in a post I made to one of Razzy's blogs. Sinestro for me is the Timothy Dalton-007 of the Green Lantern Corps while Hal Jordan is more of the Sean Connery/Roger Moore of the GLs. The reason for this is that like Dalton's 007 (which consisted unfortunately of only two Bond movies if I'm not mistaken), Sinestro most accurately portrays the multidimensional character that a Green Lantern is with regard to how much power he wields and then some. Hal Jordan's ways are womanizing and singular at best which seems to fit both Moore's female charmer 007 and Connery's grim-determined persona. By sheer power alone Sinestro is the greatest Green Lantern of them all, and for me, he plays the most accurate Lantern to date. Probably was the only reason why I liked the movie back in June.

Anyone think that maybe Sinestro's time as the host for the white entity could have opened his mind to new possibilities and how easy it is to use the ring to its full capability. There must be a reason why the white entity chose him during Blackest Night. I have really enjoyed the first 3 issues of this series, its been awesome.

That but on Hal's training was my favorite line in the issue... it really sells so much of what is going on in Sinestro's head, and what his character is all about. Wonderful article.

Actually there was mention of a sub unit within the Green lantern corp called the Corpse whose light went to places "too dark for the green." This could imply that sinestro knew about their existance.

The release windows for the first New 52 collections were announced recently and the GL one is called "Sinestro: Rebirth". What are the odds he stays a GL for the foreseeable future and the corps changes around him? That's what I'm hoping for.

@Eyz: Kyle has also created entire armies to back him in combat, resisted Parallax (the first time they clashed), and used his ring as a "ship" to transport him back to Earth and evade a death blow. I agree that this post shows Sinestro's depth of knowledge and experience. But only Kyle has ever showed his effectiveness in using the ring.

Sinestro is overrated, the only he's as powerful as he is, is because of Johns writing him. He's Johns pride and joy.

Lanterns have always been able to change their light's color. It's the writers that forgot to play with it :P

Heck, Kyle had created a full fledged duplicate of him than turned evil back in Circle of Fire!

Creating a ring isn't anything special. After all, a billion of rings were created during Blackest Night to fight against Nekron.

sinestro has always been powerful and he's always been known to be the BEST green lantern. but the point of hal jordans character was to overcome FEAR, and sinestro being the symbolic character of fear throught the comics, Hal had to overcome him which he has on several occasions. so its interesting that this story is going in the direction that it is because its willpower+fear=?? and we read to find out how this equation works because you have two characters that mix just as well as Oil and Water. and i think thats whats going to make this a huge impact on the series. which REALLy is stronger fear or willpower. what overcomes what and WHAT is emotion is sinestro better at using. im eager to see how this comic series will go on. and with the

Death of Hal and Ganthets mention of a "third army"

the plot just keeps getting better and better. stuff like this is why i LOVE green lantern comics x)

Power levels on comics is never constant. It might actually be that Sinestro is the most powerful at the time but that doesn't mean Hal can't overpower him at some point in time. But, I agree that in this reboot it seems to be that Sinestro is going to be a lot more powerful than he was before.
