Five Revelations About Pandora in JUSTICE LEAGUE #6

The mysterious pink lady in the DC "New 52" comics gets the spotlight and new details emerge.

Ever since the last issue of FLASHPOINT and all the first issues of "The New 52," we've been wondering who the mysterious glowing pink lady was. When Barry Allen was trying to sort out the Flashpoint timeline, the lady spoke to him about combining the 'history of heroes' that was shattered into three. This lead to the new DC Universe we've been reading for the past six months. Since that first appearance, we've only seen her standing around observing random events, many appearing to be of no major importance.

No Caption Provided

It was later revealed that her name was Pandora. Her role in the DC Universe was unknown but we were told big things were coming. With her appearance in the back-up story in JUSTICE LEAGUE #6, we're starting to get some answers. There are still plenty of unanswered questions but this is the start of something big.

If you haven't read JUSTICE LEAGUE #6, there will be some spoilers below. We won't reveal everything that the issue has to offer but you have been warned.

== TEASER ==

Pandora's Face

No Caption Provided

In her Flashpoint appearance, we saw a little of her face. It was under her cloak and we couldn't see full details. There were some markings but now we get a clear look at what she looks like. Her face and body was always in shadows.

Seeing her face, we're immediately reminded of Zealot. We have seen some WILDSTORM characters in the "New 52" but Zealot hasn't been seen yet.

Regardless, being Zealot wouldn't make sense. She seems older and bigger than the average character in the DC Universe. We now know she has a humanoid face.

As to why she has those markings, we'll have to wait and see.

Pandora Knows Phantom Stranger

No Caption Provided

Who is Phantom Stranger? Pandora sure knows. Phantom Stranger first appeared way back in 1952. His origin has never been told and his real name has never been revealed.

Phantom Stranger questions her actions towards messing with the universe and asks why she's observing everything. He also mentions others of higher power not being pleased with her actions. When he threatens her and asks for possession of a 'box' she has, she's quick to retaliate, showing she is capable of doing more than just stand around watching everyone.

Pandora also reveals that she knows who Phantom Stranger really is. She points out that he would have more enemies than she does if she revealed his true name.

She's Been Judged by a Higher Power

No Caption Provided

When Phantom Stranger encounters her, he points out she's lucky Spectre wasn't sent after her. This doesn't phase her and she comments that she's already been judged by a higher power. It feels as if she's working alone in realigning the universe but there appears to be others she would have to answer to. The fact that she's already been judged makes you wonder if her merging the three timelines was all her idea or if she is working under the orders or approval of others.

Her Actions Strengthened Reality

No Caption Provided

The state of the DC Universe has never fully been stable. There used to be an infinite number of parallel universes. CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS did away with all that. Eventually more worlds started popping up and there were 52 existing.

Pandora's actions appears to have merged three of those worlds (Earth-0, the regular DC world, Earth-13, the Vertigo world and Earth-50, the Wildstorm world). If there were only 52 worlds or timelines, why were these three chosen? Why did they have to be combined in order to strengthen reality? We know Earth-2 exists but we don't know if others have been created to keep the number at 52, or if we're back to an infinite number.

Pandora is Cursed and has a Mission

No Caption Provided

Pandora isn't messing with the timelines just for the heck of it. There's a reason for her actions. She doesn't seem to have a choice in the matter. She tells Phantom Stranger that she is cursed and has to continue with what she's doing. Merging the timelines in Flashpoint was apparently just the beginning. To finish her mission, she's going to need the Justice League's help. What role they'll play or when exactly we'll see their recruitment to her cause remains to be seen.

Other Points

As mentioned, this isn't everything the six pages revealed about Pandora. There is still more to see. It is worth mentioning that she has an interesting form or self-defense. Her tactics and abilities are definitely interesting. This back-up story didn't tell us everything we wanted to know about Pandora but what we do see definitely arouses our curiosity even more. There is also the question of whether or not she has anything to do with a certain development in the Justice League portion of the issue.

Now we just need to wait for her next appearance.

Pandora is so not Darkseid's daughter that Jim Lee squashed that rumor very quickly on Twitter. Right now it seems that there's still a confusion about Pandora merging timelines or worlds. Hopefully that will be answered in the new52 FBCD issue.

Its clear the infinite Multiverse is being rebooted with her as the failsafe should this current "New 52" not workout with us as the fans and readers. At least we have something tangent to work with now when thinking of what Pandora's become. Morrison, damnit, you NEED to get onto your Multiversity project already...somehow I think lots of questions will be answered with this. The part that has me most intrigued is that she answers to a power apparently higher than The Spectre. Beyond the Presence maybe? Is this possibly, and might I reemphasize POSSIBLY, the emergence of the abstract concept known as the Overmonitor finally into the DC? Curiouser and curiouser...

This was a cool idea for a back-up story. At least now we're getting more of our money's work with Justice League. I love the book, it's just that I wish it weren't so short every month.

I think maybe she is the Daughter of Darkseid, as he was searching for her on Earth, but there's no proof

I was thinking that too! haha :) It would make total sense and easily fit. Who is Darkseid's daughter anyway?

I feel like they're drawing a great balance with her. They're keeping her enigmatic enough that people are talking about her, but giving out enough info and tantalizing hints to keep drawing people in.

I like this possibility that she might actually have done more harm than good by creating the DCnU, because ever since she mentioned when she first appeared that it was to make this world stronger by merging them I've looked at it and went "How is making all the characters younger and getting rid of some of them making this world stronger?" So I like that Phantom Stranger is kind of calling her out on only thinking she made it stronger.

You'd think she was Pandora of the Greek myths after they mention the box, which would mean she connects nicely to the Wonder Woman mythos, but with a character of universe changing powers just being connected Wonder Woman doesn't seem large enough in scale.

I'm.... just glad that there is something more to the events at the end of Flashpoint. She used Barry Allen to create this new universe and bang... that was it. This entire time I've really just been wanting a continuation or an epilogue to Flashpoint. I think its something that, for me personally, overshadowed the new 52 launch.

And so what if she's a failsafe? Good. Great. People are still mixed on the new 52 anyway... and you know... failsafe doesn't exactly mean reverting back... it could be a failsafe to hit reset a 2nd time. Think about it.

Someone also pointed out how Earth 2 has actually changed too and that's a good point. Its not just Earth Zero... the entire multiverse has been mucked with.

The two guns she's carrying made me immediately think of The Crimson Avenger. The original character, Lee Travis, was the first "hero" in DC Comics history. I don't really know where to go with that idea...lol.

But, so far, I do have to agree that she was created to be DC's fail-safe device in case the "New 52" didn't work out. What her role is now...I don't know. Nor can I make any other relation to The Crimson Avenger other than to say that with him being the first (modern) hero, it can be said that he was there at the beginning of it all.

I don't know, maybe I am crazy, but all this seemed to imply was that DC was leaving themselves one monster sized hole to ram a retcon through again if at some point they aren't happy with this universe. I give it 2 years tops, before they have completely reverted back to the old continuity. They are just giving themselves way to much outs right now. Pandora, and now Earth 2. Next thing you know, we will be back at the 52 and nothing will have changed.

I loved it. I got my mind whirling. I have no idea about the Phantom Stranger as it was so this got me curious about him as well. 1 character from before the revamp who knows about it's existance. Curious. I don't think she answers to anyone either. I think she's doing all alone, but she's defecting from someone or some type of order. Who also has more judgement powers then Spectre? I always thought he answered to God? Pandora is a Greek Myth character and the box??????????????? We all know that story.

Still I hope she's ugly enough to be recognizable as Darkseids daughter.

i was excited to see phatom stranger at the end. one of my favorite characters in the DC universe. a real treat for me. i also like how he will definitly have a huge part in this new dc universe. but i just wish they would add him to the Justice League Dark series. his character would fit SOO well in it. way better than shade or mindwarp! and peter milligans writting would do good for phantom stranger. i hope he joins their roster instead of Geoff johns main justice league. geoff johns just isnt a good writter. he makes epic michael bay movie quality events but he's not a good comic writter. especially for phantom strangers character...dissapointed that he's taking part in this series kinda :/

Zealot doesn't really, but Kherubim relation is definitely implied, and would add up given back history now consists of a fusion between different continuities. Thinking about the Kherubim, I wonder of it will come to be that Wonder Woman's history is now tied to them in this new timeline. Noting a fused back history though, this character may not be traditionally Kherubim, and one that's been mixed with that Wildstorm back history but original heralded from a different timeline originally. Jim Lee in particular has pulled that play often, and particularly used it as a red herring.

Basically, six pages of padding.

Also as much as I like it when the Phantom Stranger shows up they best treat that whole "I know who you are!" as a throw away threat!

They won't. Geoff Johns will do to PS what he did to the Spectre, have him job to some D-Grade character that Johns created.

@Batmandemon23: The Phantom Stranger is the most deliberately ambiguous character in DC canon. Having someone, other than himself or the Presence know his origin takes away from that. Additionally, he's unkillable and KNOWS EVERYTHING EVER. It seems like Geoff just watched the last ep of Doctor Who season 6 and decided to steal the idea of a character's identity (which has always been hidden) as being a catalyst for destruction. Now Pandora, someone created something like 6 issues ago, is threatening one of the most enigmatic and powerful beings in the DCU, just coz.

Having some two-bit creation made to justify DC's worst decision ever even compare to him, is an insult to the Phantom Stranger.

Or Greek mythology Pandora, foolish and curious enough to open a bow she had specifically been said not to open, ever, and then probably ashamed because she had done it or because of her punishment. The myths are very close anyway...
