Five More Ways DC's 'The New 52' Has Changed the Justice League

Justice League #2 reveals some more changes in the DC Universe.

We're into the second month of DC's 'The New 52.' Most of the characters have been revealed and we've had a good idea who has had tweaks to their pasts and who has remained the same. While we still have many questions as to how things played out 'in the beginning,' Justice League is serving to pave the way as to who the world's greatest heroes got together to form the team. We've seen some changes as a result of the first issue and we're still getting some more in the second.

No Caption Provided

The second issue was a blast from a fanboy's perspective. You have to hand it to Geoff Johns and Jim Lee to giving us some action packed bickering between the future team members. There will be some spoilers for issue #2 below but you owe it to yourself to read the issue for yourself to see everything that happens. You can also check out our review for the issue here.

== TEASER ==

There was a Flash Task Force

No Caption Provided

We've heard of a 'Batman Task Force' before. Batman was immediately accepted by the police force and we've seen stories of the mayor ordering a team dedicated to putting a stop to his vigilante ways. When Barry Allen became the Flash, he didn't have those problems. It could've been because he didn't operate in the shadows and was a little more open with the public. He was accepted as a hero. Due to an incident in trying to capture a certain villain, some destruction resulted and Central City wasn't too crazy about him.

This is also the first time we're seeing a 'younger' Barry Allen. If last month's Flash #1, Flash appears to be considered more of a hero. We also find out Barry and Hal are sort of friends at this point.

Superman's strength is stronger than Hal's willpower

No Caption Provided

We all know that Superman is stronger than just about anyone. We have seen Green Lantern constructs shattered before but usually it's by other power rings. Hal is said to have one of the strongest will around. The fact that he's so surprised here that Superman is able to shatter them shows that either he's stronger that before or this is just the first time Hal faced someone at this strength level. Then again, maybe his focus slipped a little during all the chaos.

Flash is faster than Superman...maybe

No Caption Provided

There's always been the debate, who's faster, Flash or Superman? Over the years, when we had the Superman/Flash races, it seemed the winner always flipped back and forth. When the two tangle here, it's almost embarrassing for Superman. But, Superman does manage to get the upper hand eventually. It appears that Flash is faster and Superman either proved that wrong or was able to anticipate his next move. Superman should have a super-brain after all so I took it as he actually used it to deal with Flash. The look in his eyes are pretty convincing that this was the case.

There's no Fortress of Solitude?

No Caption Provided

Poor Superman. It's been spoiled what happened to his parents in the back of Action Comics #2 and in Superman #1 we saw that Lois has a boyfriend and isn't interested in Clark. We see that he uses an abandoned printing press so what does this mean for the Fortress of Solitude? It would't really make sense for everyone to take a trip there just to have a chat but he specifically says he doesn't have a base of operations. It's possible, since this is taking place a few years ago, he might still go about acquiring the Fortress. For now, he's stuck entertaining at a place that isn't too fancy.

Cyborg's 'accident' is because of Darkseid

No Caption Provided

Originally Victor's parents were messing around experimenting at STAR Labs and an accident caused Victor's body to get damaged. Victor's dad then tries to rebuild it and Cyborg is born. Because they were examining a Mother Box. As you can imagine, something happens and Victor happens to get caught in the blast. Another thing that could have a big affect on Cyborg is the blast of energy he's hit with. Could we be seeing a new set of powers when we officially see Cyborg in 'The New 52'? What's going to happen when Darkseid finally shows up? We'll have to wait for the next issue.

flash needs to be faster than superman. otherwise, the flash is obsolete and not needed. you cant have superman be the best at everything.

exactly. I always just assumed that Flash was faster than superman for this reason.

I wholeheartedly agree. A man throwing a punch at that speed would have some pretty heavy power behind it.

I dunno... They all seem like a bunch of frat boys with high levels of testosterone when they're around eachother. I halfway expected them to be lying down in the middle of traffic like in the movie "The Program". Not a big fan of the superhero insecurities. The artwork is great, but the reimagining really needs a lot of work.

I kind of think that is a little more apt to how they would act around each other at first.  These guys are all alpha males, used to being the best, when you throw someone like that into a team setting it is not an instant gel, they have to each assert themselves to prove their worth or to see who will actually lead them.

@UltimateSMfan: I always preferred Superman to be slower than Flash. Yeah Supes is my man but he shouldn't be the top dog in the speed division. He should be fast and not a pushover but that must be Flash's specialty. The way I see it, Speedforce should always be above Supes. Though I would have liked it better if that was Wally... Nyehehe! But still no biggie.

And I'm loving how Supes just shows he's the alpha male. This is what Supes should be.

I totally agree with the Flash being the fastest, but come on, Barry Allen is the Man!

@ArtisticNeedham: he's being attacked just before he met with Batman and GL. I think it's reasonable for Supes to made precaution move. anyway i like how they handle supes, batman, hal and barry... but i also hope their behaviour change over time, off course..., according to their personality and their role in DCNU.

bottomline i like that supes can handle grup/team attack like that... it affirmed him as "super"-man.

Flash is faster than Superman and they show it fully in this fight. Superman hit him because of the same reason he broke Lantern's constructs, they both were not use to any one as powerful as him. Flash was to busy telling him that he wasn't fast enough that he did consider how fast he could actually be. Another battle between these three would prove difficult for the an of Steel. Batman too. I can see Superman on the other side of this if he fights Wonder Woman. Being that she is nearly as strong as him.

@komikboy: He seems less even tempered than Superman usually is depicted. I understand that in Action Comics he is young, able to do anything he wants and doesn't think about it much. And he is angry maybe because the loss of his parents. But in JLA, not sure how much time has passed since Action Comics, Superman still seems a little easier to agitate. Sure he was attacked but the other, current, Superman wouldn't lunge for the throat or make threats like that right out of the park. I just thought they may be altering what he was like in the past so that now we might adjust how we see him in the present.

And I liked the issue too. I liked how they all interacted and instantly sort of bonded as a semi team with a common goal like that. I want to see the next issue, see how Superman acts in that. If he act more level headed then...

I wonder, will Superman's current personality of being mature, moral, and all that, be formed by his experiences on the JLA fighting along side Batman Wonder Woman and the rest?

I am extremely excited about everything the DC has done thus far. I just hope that it continues. The fact that JL features all of the heroes coming together or even meeting for the first time is pretty cool. I loved Flash and GL especially in #2.

Flash hardly embarrassed Superman there. You all say Green Lantern and Flash weren't used to someone as powerful as Supes. I say the same applies the other way around. Loving this! Superman is where he needs to be. Shown at the top :)

This part of 52 keeps getting better. I know some don't like lee's style of drawing...but I like the fact the book is continuing with the same style. At least with this story.

Plus Batman/Green Lantern spinoff adventures sounds good!!

But I wouldn't mind seeing some of these Green Lantern/Flash versions first.

@ArtisticNeedham: uhmm... aren't they already said that action is about 5 years before JLA?!

I don't really sure i agree that superman suposed to be pasif (more calm and talk first before making action)... at least in this storyline... i meant that's the different betwean me and some people who said superman now (in this story) is more temprament or being rushed or easily to agigate. What i want to say is that personally, i don't want to see superman (or any) character is being static. he supposed to portrayed/told become mature with time. evenmore, an experience superman (=mature) supposed to be act according the situation. i love boyscout aspect in superman... but i don't really want to see him being boyscout all the time. Making superman as light hearted, pasif, more like saint (or even sometime equated with Jesus) all the time, somehow, is the couse superman bored. let him act naturally, like sometime he like to agigate, or some time careless, and other time more calculated and carefull, or most of the time, etc... (off course, it supposed to based with reason of the story) is making him more dynamic and unpredictable... and i think that's good. bcoz, i don't want to see superman story to be predictabled.

@komikboy: I see what you mean, and one of the ways to keep Superman from being boring in terms of his personality would be to allow him to act more human and according to the situations. Not have him act saintly all the time. Like they did with Spider-Man in his revamp, allow Superman to make mistakes even. Sure he is a veteran superhero but he can still make mistakes. But what I meant is that in this situations he heard GL talking about "handling" Superman and then saw the box Superman was holding. But Superman automatically rockets into GL (and without GL's ring would have killed him) and grabs Batman by the throat and almost kills him. Superman, to me, should only get this angry when pushed to the extreme. He should be able to get angry but Superman is meant to show by example, This Superman is early in his career so I don't know how much later it is than Action Comics. But I can understand why Superman acts less mature here. Its just that after years of having his powers and being Superman he will become more mature and in this situation would have acted differently in my opinion.

What I wonder is if Superman will learn how to act more like Superman from the rest of the JLA or on his own.

@ArtisticNeedham: see... why (there is a term) he should only get angry when pushed to the extreme? this is young superman. Its not like he can't control his power or something like that... yea, i know he knocked hal down in a sec and choked (not strangled) batman in a way to pushed him to surrender..but, looked! the way i see it, why not superman do something like that in one phase of his life... i do too don't want to see him bcome the "angry-man". but once in a while... why not? we see young clark full of spirit in action and most of us like it... but when we got gloomy or not-in-the-mood superman in superman comic, many dislike it (well, at least that what i read from several forums). So, should superman always be happy? ... why there is a term he should or must be done like this or that... yea, he is an icon... but in a story, there shouldn't be any boundary that he can or can't do...or, should or shouldn't do. (note : its not like superman can't harm people or shouldn't killed an evil creature or a villain, it just as long as there is a good reason and good story behind it...why not??)

superman is superhero...not a saint nor he isn't an angel nor he isn't a God.

if the question is: will he become DC superheroes moral compass or not? i think he mostly bcome one. but if the question is : what made him bcome DC superheroes moral compass or how will he bcome one... now That is what matter/important. And personally, i like to see a really really good story behind it.

Gotta say, I'm LOVING the new JL. I'm glad Jim is back in the field (and congrats to his promotion), and even happier to see is beautiful artwork again. I like the new character designs, both mentality and physically. It's funny to see how they don't respect Batman yet (though they will), and I really like how these "big boys" from our old comics are like children again, seeing each other for the first time and wondering how they should interacte. Feels oddly satisfying
