Five Developments from JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #4

The latest issues adds more to the series plus has a pretty crazy ending that everyone's talking about.

Geoff Johns isn't taking things easy on JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA. The team was originally put together by Amanda Waller and Steve Trevor as a preemptive precaution to take out the original Justice League. The only thing is, the team members (with one exception) have no idea of this purpose. As they are just getting used to being a team, another threat has surfaced - the Secret Society of Super Villains. Green Arrow had infiltrated them in another guise and barely escaped with his life. In the last issue, it was decided that Catwoman would do the same and try to gain membership into the Society so the League could track them down.

During the course of the issue, we do discover some new tidbits on the team and the New 52 Universe. There will be spoilers for the issue for be sure to read it first. Especially when it comes to the crazy cliffhanger ending.

Arthur Light

No Caption Provided

In the pre-New 52 Universe, Arthur Light operated as the villain, Dr. Light. Mainly as a villain of the Justice League and Teen Titans, he later was upgraded (or downgraded?) into a vile character during IDENTITY CRISIS, in which it was revealed his mind was later altered by Zatanna after he attacked Sue Dibny in the Justice League Watchtower.

Now Arthur Light is working for A.R.G.U.S. He is the "leading mind on super-human energies." It seems he is a true patriot as he is working to do his best "for America."

The Invisible Jet

No Caption Provided

Wonder Woman's original mode of transport has long been one of ridicule. With her ability to fly, there really isn't a need for her to have an invisible plane. As the team prepares to embark on tracking down the Secret Society, Trevor takes them on board their transport. The plane had been modified by A.R.G.U.S. and is a "flying fortress equipped with an arsenal capable of taking on a small army." It also has a cloaking device that makes it so not even Superman would be able to detect it.

Stargirl's Rebellion

No Caption Provided

In the New 52, Stargirl is somewhat of a celebrity. The young hero has become a media sensation and regardless of the power she possesses, she has been used as the JLA's spokesperson. This means she has been held back on missions deemed too dangerous.

After getting left behind once already and Waller making it clear where she stood with her, Stargirl decides she's going on the new mission regardless. Aside from putting her life at risk, Waller also made it clear that he has some information on Courtney that she probably wouldn't want others to know about. If she survives this mission, she'll definitely have some explaining to do to Waller.

The Birth of Dr. Light?

No Caption Provided

While studying a coin used as a communication device from the Secret Society that was emitting a strange frequency, Light undergoes a transformation.

It almost seems as if the Society wanted the coin to be investigated as Light experiences a 'nasty' message, bathing him in an unknown energy that will likely transform him closer into the character we knew before.

Catwoman's Fate

This is the big one. Normally we don't spoil stuff like this or endings of issues but chances are you've already heard the about Catwoman's fate.

Catwoman found herself bound at the Society's secret mansion. She easily managed to escape when left alone. She came upon Professor Ivo and was soon apprehended again. When the Society's leader asked what her and her "friends" were doing there, she acted as if she didn't know who or what he was talking about. When she refused to answer, he pulled off the handle of his cane and held a gun to her head.

No Caption Provided

Catwoman claimed if he killed her, Batman would stop at nothing to find him. That's exactly what they want. The trigger was pulled.

No Caption Provided

Sure there are some ways out of this mess, especially considering some of the players involved in this issue. Even though the cover to next month's issue wants you to believe otherwise. But that's a discussion for another time.

No Caption Provided

Be sure to pick up the issue to see the other events that occurred as well as the backup revealing more about Martian Manhunter.

Cat woman. Dead or not dead? I don't care as much as the portrayal of that death. I won't be naive and rally against violence in comic books. But I have a serious issue with violence against women and the gratuitous expression of it. Is anyone else bothered by seeing a woman shot through the head with a close up of her bleeding ont the ground? I think it's horrible.

i like this series and really want to love it but two stupid things happened in this series that really bugs me, and me and stupid were never friends.

1. they send green arrow under cover and he easily gets found out and almost DIES. so what is their plan b? plan a, with catwoman! and shocker, she DOES die (allegedly).

2. when ivo threatens catwoman she says batman will come after him if he kills her and he says that's exactly what he wants. my problem with this? the society knows where the batcave is, heck they had someone break in and steal stuff in the justice league book. most likely they know who batman is as well so why not just attack him? bomb the batcave or sneak into wayne manor and kill while he's asleep. killing catwoman to lure him in is totally pointless.

guess we'll see where this story going with next issue.

Can't wait to read this issue! So nice to see Art Light in DC again, though I must admit I'm not wild about seeing the invisible jet again, even if it is in a different form.

@ovidkid: I don't follow the Batman family of books, so I wouldn't know. Also, it was complete sarcasm.

@mickeyangel: I feel like it's disturbing simply because it's a close up of a person shot in the face. There's gratuitous violence against women? Gratuitous sexualization, sure, but violence too?

The comic is probably going to say Serena's got nine lives. EVERY cat themed comic character HAS to deal with this sooner or later.

I agree. That's actually why I started this thread -- not to flip out about her being gone, but because of how they did this.

Oh, oh Batman is so going to go on a rampage. Just like he did when Joker killed Robin, oh wait he didn't go on a rampage because Batman is a pansy ass who let's mass murderers and child killers run around the DCU. Batman is joke kill the Joker stop rebooting so you can tell the same story over and over every 12 months.

I am more in favor of him being the opposite to Cyborg, as mentioned before they both have the science thing going for them and it plays into the (awful) Dr. Light vs TT Johns wrote before Infinite Crisis arrived... where Light could take anything the Titans could throw at him, except for 'solar-panel' Cyborg.

I think MM will bring her back. There is no way they'd kill her off because she has her own fairly successful series. Maybe she'll stay as a covert agent.

The portrayal of violence against women isn't automatically bad. It's when women characters are not developed and just serve as eye candy or a plot device, both, or that the violence is done is a particularity disrespectful way.

That isn't the case here. Selina is a strong, well developed character who puts herself in situations where her being captured, tortured or killed are all a possibility. Seemingly she had some bad luck this time and was killed. She was killed with a gun, in a clean, simple and straight to the point manner.

I don't see how there is any problem with it relating specifically to women, unless you think violence against women should never be depicted, in which case that is ridiculous and unrealistic.

While its possible J'onn or Black Orchid or some different shape shifter was in her place, at the end of the issue it does say "Next Time: REVENGE!" with the Bat symbol around "revenge", so... my only thought is Stargirl is gonna sneak in and cosmically heal Catwoman, or save the team from Shaggy Man, or both.

@perfect_10: Green Arrow was under the disguise of the Dark Hunter, who (as far as i know), a completely new villain. If there was a mole on the team or really, any villain who knows Green Arrow's voice really well, they could have found him out. Catwoman on the other hand, is a completely secret member of the JLA (unless again, there's a mole), and a respected member of the villain community. Also, if the Secret Society's plans involve fighting the Justice League, they could've thought like Trevor and had plans for her to fight Batman, making her more useful than the "Dark Hunter".

While i agree with the whole sneak into the Batcave to take down Batman, its possible they would want to draw him to their base. That way they would have a home court advantage, and if he beats whoever they had planned to take him, there's still still an entire gang of villains he'd have to get through to escape. And it's probably a lot harder to sneak all those villains into the Batcave to ambush him.
