Five Developments from JUSTICE LEAGUE #39

Can the Amazo Virus be contained? What will be the cost to the Justice League before the Darkseid War begins?

The Darkseid War is coming up but before that happens, the Justice League have to defeat the Amazo Virus. It’s claimed many, including most of the Justice League. It’s now up to Superman, Wonder Woman, and Lex Luthor to save the rest of the Justice League and the world.

During the fight, there are some big things that happen. If you still haven’t read JUSTICE LEAGUE #39, we strongly suggest you do so now before continuing. Spoiler below!

Wonder Woman Inspires Lex & Captain Cold to do Good

After the events of Forever Evil, the Justice League sort of got stuck with Lex Luthor and Captain Cold on the team. A big part of the plan to stop the Amazo Virus is for Superman and Lex to work together plus the fact that they need to be able to trust Lex. Superman is hesitant. You can see when Diana talks to him, it’s almost like he truly wants to do the right thing because she commands it.

Later we see Captain Cold doing his thing to help out. His reaction to Wonder Woman is a little different but the results are the same. He’s always had his one code in doing things. Perhaps he’ll want to make himself a better person as well in order to not disappoint Wonder Woman.

Lex Luthor Gets Access to Superman’s Blood (Again)

There’s something in Superman’s blood that prevents him from becoming infected by the Amazo Virus. Lex said if he could analyze it, he could figure out a cure for everyone. Of course this means completely trusting Lex. It’s not like he would immediately lose the data he collects. Even if he said he’d immediately delete it, you know he must have zipped off the data to an remote server someplace.

Is Lex truly turning over a new leaf? Did he truly want to help mankind? It was, after all, his fault the virus got out. How long until he returns to his old ways and uses the sample to try to figure out another way to defeat Superman?

What seems a little odd is Lex had a blood sample before. We saw how and when he got it in SUPERMAN #23.1, which eventually lead to him creating Bizarro. Even after Bizarro sadly died, Lex started making plans to create another. Did Lex lose all records of Superman's blood? Did he just need a newer/fresher sample? There must be something more going on here. Lex did claim he infected Superman four years ago. Since the virus didn't leave him powerless, that means he developed antibodies. Still, it feels like Lex is up to something else. Or maybe we should just give him the benefit of the doubt.

New Heroes or Villains Coming?

Of course the cure couldn’t be perfect. There has to be repercussions. What would we have to talk about if there weren’t any? Part of the cure left a small portion of the population with metahuman abilities. Are we going to see a surge of new heroes and villains? This is also a great time to see characters that still haven’t made their way into the New 52 universe.

The other question is, where will these new metahumans go to learn how to use their new abilities? Will they figure them out on their own without harming anyone? Will some maniacal villain prey upon them for their own devices?

And Amos Fortune? It doesn't seem like he'd be a big deal. Royal Flush Gang coming soon?

Amazo Will Return

This is almost a no-brainer. What do you do with a defeated supervillain? This new version of Amazo causes some serious problems for the Justice League. Obviously you can’t just throw a powerful villain like this away. He may be contained now, but we can count on his return eventually.

Imagining him going after Lex is kind of fun.

Jessica Cruz Gets a New Green Lantern Mentor

Remember back in GREEN LANTERN #20 when we got our first glimpse of Jessica Cruz? We were told that Simon Baz was "ultimately responsible for training the first female ring bearer of Earth." Where the heck is Simon Baz?

It turns out it's not Baz that makes an appearance here. Another Lantern arrives to help her out. This goes against what we saw in GREEN LANTERN #20, but then again, some other things have changed as well.

It is pretty cool which Lantern arrives on Earth. The idea of this Lantern playing a part in fighting in the Darkseid War is pretty great as well. We won't tell you which Lantern. Come on. We're not going to spoil everything. Read the issue!

JUSTICE LEAGUE is heating up. JUSTICE LEAGUE #40 is the prelude to The Darkseid War. It's on sale March 18, so you won't want to miss it.
