Five Developments from GREEN LANTERN #7

"The Secret of the Indigo Tribe" begins and there will be some spoilers revealed here.

Ever since the War of Light story arc, we've seen several different Lantern Corps arise. The most mysterious one is the Indigo Tribe. With their oath in a language others do not seem to understand, we've been left wondering what exactly they are saying and why Abin Sur's name is part of it. We also know that Abin Sur imprisoned Indigo-1, another mystery we've been waiting to unravel.

No Caption Provided

Now with "The Secret of the Indigo Tribe" beginning in GREEN LANTERN #7, we're bound to finally get some answers. Because this is the first issue in the arc, we obviously won't get all the answers immediately. There are some new developments though that are moving the story along and changing certain aspects for several characters. There will be spoilers below so be sure to read GREEN LANTERN #7 if you haven't already.

== TEASER ==

Hal Jordan is Finally Getting his Priorities Straight

No Caption Provided

Hal Jordan has been the number one Green Lantern for quite some time now. He's done things that others could never do. He pretty much gave up all aspects of his personal life in order to serve the Green Lantern Corps. Even after having his power ring taken away from him by the Guardians, he was willing to work with Sinestro in order to gain a new one.

Hal has recently figured out those days are behind him. He decided that Carol Ferris is more important to him than being a Green Lantern. When Sinestro came knocking and told Hal they had "work to do," Hal told him he was done. He told Sinestro to take the ring he made for him and leave them alone.

The Indigo Tribe Believes Sinestro Belongs to Them

No Caption Provided

We don't know what, besides compassion, drives the Indigo Tribe. They suddenly appeared and demanded that Sinestro go with them. Overpowering him, they took him and mentioned that the Guardians made a mistake in letting him keep the power ring after it went to him. For reasons unknown, they claim Sinestro belongs to him. Perhaps their goal is for Sinestro to serve them just as Black Hand does.

Carol Makes a Decision

No Caption Provided

What ever happened to Carol being a member of the Star Sapphire Corps? When this volume of GREEN LANTERN began, Carol was back on Earth and there was no mention to her position within the Star Sapphire Corps.

When Hal appeared to be in trouble against the Indigo Tribe, Carol couldn't simply sit back and do nothing. It turned out she still has a Star Sapphire ring but had stopped wearing it and possibly severed her connection to the Corps. She didn't want to have to do it but she had no choice but to put the ring back on.

The Guardians Want the Book of the Black

No Caption Provided

Those pesky little blue Guardians are still up to no good. Last issue we saw Sinestro defeat Lyssa Drak and before taking her to Oa to be locked up, he took the Book of the Black from her. The fact that she doesn't have the book is something that the Guardians aren't too happy about. We know the Guardians plan on replacing the Green Lantern Corp and are in search of "the First Lantern," but it seems that they need the Book of the Black in order to find this Lantern. In obtaining the book, they are willing to kill Lyssa for knowing too much and one is willing to kill the Lantern that is watching over sciencells. The Guardians just seem to be getting more and more evil.

Hal Encounters Black Hand Once Again

No Caption Provided

Black Hand caused quite a bit of a ruckus earlier. Before becoming known as Black Hand, William Hand became obsessed with death. When Atrocitus came looking for him, he was actually saved by Hal and Sinestro (this was before Sinestro was first banished from the Green Lantern Corps).

Hand later became responsible for Blackest Night and bringing about the Black Lantern Corps.

After his defeat, he was taken by the Indigo Tribe, where he serves as their captive servant.

When Hal is face to face with him, he wonders what's going on. Hand recites some of the Indigo Tribe oath and tells Hal that they are "all saved" and Sinestro will be as well.

The Indigo Tribe is supposed to be about compassion. Black Hand did a lot of bad things during Blackest Night so you have to wonder why they would want him to be part of their tribe. We also have to wonder why Indigo-1 was locked up by Abin Sur.

We don't get those answers here but we should soon find out what exactly the Indigo Tribe is up to.

Once again, not everything from the issue has been revealed here. Make sure to pick the issue up from your local comic shop to see the other events that unfolded here. Things are starting to get crazy.

Wait a minute now, I can't see why Hal settling down with Carol is setting his priorities straight. I just... don't get it. Hal could either settle down with Carol, try to hold a job he hates, try to live a life he'll come to resent, who wins here? How the hell is is a bunch of people who still read comic books (presumably some of you are adults by now) can sit there and defend the average lifestyle they themselves probably are or would be miserable in? I'm not saying Hal doesn't have issues, and I'm sure he's been avoiding them by focusing on the ring instead, but I can't see it being a bad choice. Most people repressing issues are busy breaking down, not saving the universe. Not to mention, Johns has been making Sinestro more and more integral to Hal's issues each time he writes about the two. Whether or not a confrontation between the two is good Hal might have to face some of that if he's going to work with the man.

For that matter, why is it when Hal is more or less forced to wear the ring again he's made a bad decision, but when Carol scrambles for her ring she has no choice? Nobody forced it on her, but when it comes to Hal the universe actually is in the balance. She's simply scrambling to catch up in a situation where she's just not needed.

Nah, you don't. Save your money, or buy Venom. Are you reading Venom? Read Venom.

Yes, yes you do need to read it! Besides, Venom costs $5 while GL is only $3.. that is a deciding factor on which books I buy, lol.

Having read these I'm beginning to think the Indigo tribe are just as treaturous as those pesky Guardians. I don't like that they seem more powerful as well. I was lead to believe when Carol was last on Zamoron she was pronounced as Queen after the one prior sacrificed herself, what's happened there hmmm?

I will definitely have to consider getting trades of this and the other GL titles to read on into what these stories contain, but by what I see, I'm quite intrigued. After all, I've been curious as to Black Hand's fate with the Indigo Tribe ever since Blackest Night.. And Ferris with a Star Sapphire ring is always awesome :)

I jumped off this book last issue for the same reason I jumped off GL a couple of years back - it's Lanterns who do nothing but fight with other Lanterns and obsess over rings, all the time. When the New 52 started I was delighted to find the GL book focussing on just Hal and Sinestro, and set on Earth, but now we're knee-deep in rainbow mythology yet again. With four GL books you'd expect there to be room for one which isn't totally inward looking ... Anyway, ta for the recap Tony, but it sounds as if this really isn't for me. Though that 'except for her' panel is a winner!

I like the idea of the green lantern corps and all the space adventures, but I've always found Hal Jordan incredibly boring. He's to me one of the shallowest DC main characters.

This issue was great and was my favorite from this week. It should be interesting to see what will happen in the next issue. I am most excited to learn if Hal will keep his ring after this adventure. Also excited to see Carol as Star Sapphire again

@DarthShap: I'm just hoping he doesn't have his priorities straight because I couldn't STAND how easily Hal overcame his addiction to the ring. They spent a huge chunk of the first arc making sure we knew it was indeed addiction, then just kind of let him overcome it. I couldn't find a single moment in the arc that really hit Hal enough to make him realize his addiction was a problem.

He just kind of decided he was done because he couldn't get a ring anyways, and then he suddenly was over his addiction, and I find that ridiculously implausible. Thus, I'm taking to heart even the tiniest signs that could suggest Hal's only fooled himself into thinking he's got this beat, because if he had fully gotten past it, that would just be pathetic.

Are you serious? How can you say Hal has his priorities straight? If anything this issue proved that he DOESN'T have his priorities straight even though he THINKS he does. For all his protesting against Sinestro and insistance that he's done, the instant Sinestro tells him "The Guardians are going to replace the Green Lanterns," Hal was hooked again. Go back and look at that page where Sinestro tells him that. Look at Hal's face. They've been talking a lot lately about Hal's 'addiction' to the ring, and though he thought he had it beat, that face right there shows he hasn't. Priorities straight my butt.

Except there is a big difference between flying away because you are addicted to adrenaline and the ring, what he refused to do because he does have his priorities straight, and doing it because all of your best friends might get killed by the Guardians if you do not do anything. One is selfish and Carol suffered because of it, the other is compassionate and Carol can obviously understand it.

@Avenging-X-Bolt: And that's why he flew off after the Indigo Tribe without a second thought about Carol? Once Sinestro said the Corps was in trouble, Hal didn't say a word about or to Carol the rest of the issue.

@Mighty Monarch: Just because he still cares about the corps doesn't mean He doesn't mean his priorities have changed. You're judging a bit too quickly. When the real moment of truth comes, Hal will pick Carol.

Agreed. I started reading DC for the first time at the launch of the new 52 as well. This book, the New Guardians, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, and Batman are pretty consistently in my top 5 favorites.

Compassion is usually synonimous with forgiveness and charity, so the Indigo Tribe would of course see the positive potential of characters like Black Hand and Sinistro. In fact, I reckon that all members of the Tribe were originally criminals who have managed to redeem themselves through acts of Compassion. It makes total sense for the Indigo Tribe to have Black Hand working for them, and for the Tribe to want to recruit Sinistro.

Good to know Hal has his priorites straight. I like him being a green lantern but its also nice to see a hero doing something he wants. Every superhero has to make time for themselves. Its starting to sound like the Indigo Tribe are up to something. Are they suppose to be the path to redemption for villains who really did bad things like Black Hand and the Blackest Night?

Plus the Guardians are becoming a bunch of jerks. I know theres a better word to describe them but I rather not use it. I know the guardians have been kinda messed up and Ganthet was like the only cool guardian but now not so much. For a bunch of emtionless guardians, they sure act paranoid. They sure have done some shady or messed up things resulting in certain deaths for some of the Green Lantern Corps members or other aliens such as Abin Sur.
