Five Biggest Ways DC's 'The New 52' Has Changed the Justice League

The DC Universe is no longer the one that we knew. Here are some of the big changes with the Justice League. There will be some spoilers.

The DC Universe has been relaunched. With Justice League #1, everything is the same yet completely different. Over the last few months, we've been seeing covers and solicitation information on the new titles. Some characters appear to be untouched and unaffected but "The New 52." Other characters look to have a complete overhaul.

Justice League #1 answers some of the questions we have had about this new DC Universe. We've heard over and over that it's not a reboot. In some ways it is and in some ways it isn't. Looking over this issue and what will come after, we can see the groundwork being laid out before us.

No Caption Provided

Be aware that there will be some minor spoilers below. If you haven't read Flashpoint #5 or Justice League #1, you really should. It's a comic-reading experience you don't want to miss. Here are the five most shocking differences in the new Justice League.

== TEASER ==

Cyborg is a founding member?

No Caption Provided

The first is obvious. Cyborg will be part of the team. While the first issue doesn't make it official, Victor Stone is in the issue and has been on the covers and promo images. There's nothing wrong with Cyborg being on the team. The shocking part is how his story will fit in with the formation of the Teen Titans. Justice League #1 begins five years ago and he hasn't become Cyborg yet.

No Caption Provided

Speculation has been that he was added to give some racial diversity to the team and to give them an expert in tech. Superman is from another planet. That's pretty diverse. Wonder Woman (we assume) is still from Themyscira. Aquaman is from Atlantis. The Justice League isn't made up of a bunch of white Americans. If this is the reason for adding him, that's fine. I just want to know if he will be part of the Teen Titans first in this flashback and then quickly move up to the Justice League.

As for the tech-angle, he doesn't appear to be a tech expert. He's a kid that's really good at playing football. No hints have been given that he knows about technology. His father is another story and that connection could bring something to the League.

Heroes are new to the world

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Originally, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, etc all were established heroes. They had fought evil before banding together to form the League. They knew about each other, they just never really worked together.

When Green Lantern and Batman meet, they don't seem to know much about each other. Green Lantern was surprised to find that Batman wasn't an urban myth. Batman didn't really know anything about Green Lantern or the Corps. He knew his name and he had problems with the Air Force in Coast City but that was it.

Because the concept of superheroes is new to the world. In other words, there hasn't been any heroes before this story takes place. That means no Justice Society of America (which we now know will get their own series taking place on Earth-2).

The idea of heroes may be new but that doesn't mean they're all popping up right now. Clearly both Batman and Green Lantern have been active. They just haven't been widely seen by the public.

Batman and Superman are wearing armor

No Caption Provided

Superman wearing Kryptonian armor could make sense. We will see his early days in Smallville wearing a simple t-shirt, jeans and work boots. The covers to issues 2 and 3 show that the world isn't necessarily accepting the idea of Superman. He may have had some rough times and wearing some armor might make him a little more comfortable.

Batman's costume might not necessarily be armor but it definitely is pretty high tech. Batman is in pursuit of a foe when the police attempt to take care of both. The mention of Batman and his enemy leaping twenty feet suggests that Batman's suit is giving him some assistance. We see him use some advanced gauntlets that really don't fit in with what he wore early in his career. Because of the five year time frame, these events have to be happening after Year One. Again, it's not clear how long Batman's been active, maybe another five years in the shadows? If Batman is wearing an advanced suit, what does that say about Robin? We haven't seen whether or not Dick Grayson wore the traditional Robin suit before he became Nightwing.

First villain is Darkseid instead of Starro

No Caption Provided

There may be some debate over what enemy originally brought the Justice League together. In Brave and the Bold #28, we saw that it was Starro's attack on Earth. Later in Justice League of America #9, the actual origin was revealed. Aliens from the planet Appellax were attacking Earth in different locations and this brought the original seven heroes together.

The foe that Batman is chasing has some advance weaponry. Later when Batman and Green Lantern face another one, Darkseid's name is mentioned. Darkseid is obviously a bigger threat than Starro. The stakes are bigger here.

They all are cocky with big egos

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Batman isn't the friendliest person. We don't know how long Batman has been fighting crime but he feels he knows what he's doing. Despite Green Lantern's display of power and ease in dealing with their enemy, Batman doesn't want his help. He figures he can handle it all alone.

Green Lantern also has a bit of arrogance. In fact, he actually refers to himself in the third person. Hal also believes because he is part of the Green Lantern Corps and is in charge of an entire space sector, dealing with a danger on Earth is something he can easily handle.

Superman's always been seen as a big boy scout. He is one of the nicer heroes. This Superman is a punch first, ask questions later. He knows he is powerful. He gives the impression that fighting a new foe would be something like a game. He's curious if it will even be a challenge.

It's almost hard to believe these guys will get along enough to actually form the Justice League. The stage has been set. The end of Flashpoint #5 gave the impression that things were the same. Justice League #1 clearly shows that this isn't the DC Universe we knew before. Issue two is bound to show us even more differences as we see the rest of the team for the first time.

I smell a good interesting topic for your next "Off My Mind"

"Off My Mind"-Diversity and Ethnicity important in Team Books?

Wink-wink...

Anyway looking up this El Dorado fiasco from DC's Super Friends, I learned something very interesting in regards to U.S. Comic Book Publications:

Black Panther = 1st African superhero 1966 (MARVEL)
Red Wolf = 1st Native American superhero 1971 (MARVEL)
Luke Cage = 1st African superhero to get his own book 1972 (MARVEL)
Shang Chi = 1st Asian superhero 1974 (MARVEL)
White Tiger = 1st Hispanic superhero 1975 (MARVEL)
Photon = 1st Black female superhero to get her own book 1989 (MARVEL)

Notice a theme?

They're all Marvel characters!

I'm guessing DC was a little late on ethnic diversity.

Also other thing I learned is that DC says it had the first Hispanic hero in a teenager called Big Words back in the 1940's.  But here's the punch line, he wasn't revealed to be Hispanic by DC until much later in the mid-1980's Post-Crisis when he was also given the name Anthony Rodriguez. They also added a new African American member too.

Hello! I was created back around the 40's but no one knew I was Hispanic until the mid-80's!  Take that El Dorado! Sabes que?

P.S.

Thank you to @Osiris1428,@illmatic06, @InnerVenom123, @helloclark, and @G-Man for a very educational session today.

My theory on Cyborg being in the Justice League and the Teen Titans is that in this new universe, he decides that since he is the youngest of the 7 heroes, he should mentor heroes like Dick Grayson, Donna Troy, Roy Harper, Aqualad, and Wally West. And it would probably make him one of the founding Titans as well. Hell, they might even remove the original team altogether and make it about the the team that had Cyborg, Raven, Beast Boy, and Starfire on it. But that's why I think about Cyborg being with the Teen Titans and the Justice League.

Teen Titans itself looks to be wildly different, more-so than JL. In light of that there's plenty of room to do something new with Cyborg. I'm excited about what they're going to do with him. He's a pet character for Johns and that usually results in awesome things(he's already promised upgrades). Yeah it was essential to add racial diversity to the mix I stand by that, I don't think it's the sole reason he's on the book though.  If nothing else, adding someone from left field like this gives us a new dynamic we haven't read before, that's enough for me.

I'm also loving the ground up approach to the universe - where the notion of 'superhero' has yet to be defined. All the other universes that have sprung up from various publishers since the 90s all got their chance to define how super people in tights make sense in this era. It's good that DC gets the chance for the same kind of establishing framework.

As for why everyone is cocky - well they're new at this. When the story jumps forward 5 years - that will be 5 years worth of Justice League antics that will create seasoned vets. It makes sense they wouldn't be at that point just yet.

I think its clear that race in comics is at a high stress point lately with the new Ultimate Spider-Man and the inclusion of Cyborg in the new Justice League roster.

But people need to recognize a few things.

1. Superman started the WHOLE game. He was the first costumed superhero. Yes hes white as rice but he was still raised in a world lightyears from where he was born. He was still conflicted with dual identities as a man from another world. Thats not just the black man's plight in America thats everybody trying to survive in America from the early 1920s up who werent of the preferred ethnic identity including people who were white but but were Irish, Jewish etc. G-Man has a point.

2. Superman was written by two Jewish dudes.  Ask Stan Lee why he changed his name. Ask Stan and Jack why they wrote the X-Men, why Magneto and Xavier seem so much like MLK and Malcolm. They'll probably tell you they saw the civil rights clashes of the sixties and could identify with what those folks were going through.

3. The foundation of superhero stories is American. Italian, Irish, Jewish, Hispanic, Black- they all had to fight for a piece of America and they were all met with resistance from the dominant races who closed off all the doors to them.

4. The issue is cosmetic and comics are not that old. Their putting in a black guy or two is not the problem. You reacting like an uneducated jerk off is. Ethnic kids grow up looking at the Justice League not knowing whos from Atlantis or what the duck a Themyscira is so that has an effect on their development.

Cosmetically we're taking the time to play catch up now
because physically there is just not enough representation of what our ideal of diversity is- because this is capitalism and we didnt start much civil rights progress until about four or five generations ago. If you didnt put the blonde haired white guy on the cover they were not going to buy your damn book. But that was back then. Minorities are steadily becoming the majority. The world is getting smaller. Cyborg is cool.

i really just like that Superman already seems like a dick. A much smarter dick at that. DCU Kal-El would have struck a pose and waited to take a hit from what he would discover soon after is the most powerful weapon in the galaxy, but this one just blitzed him. nice!

I don't think Flashpoint #5 established that everything was the same at all. The mysterious time lady clearly said that three old timelines needed to be merged. I thought that pretty much set up the fact that everything would be similar, but different.

"CBR News has heard from several sources that the woman will be "Easter Egged" into every single first issue of DC's New 52 titles, leading to suspicion about a major crossover or universe-spanning story to come. Reached for comment, a spokesperson for DC said the publisher could share nothing about the character at this time."

My guess is that is Raven. And what happened to the Dakotaverse??

Yet another pretty low down &dirty from Tony "gettin worse by the article" Guerrero.. Seriously, if your gonna bring up or highlight racial issues (every pun intended) in comics try to be crystal clear not cryptic & vague &try not to make yourself sound so obtuse..
You didnt give any CLEAR REASON why it'd be a bad thing to have Cyborg in the new  team.. But have enough clarity to point out that he isnt neccessary for diversities sake because..
eg:" Speculation has been that he was added to give some racial diversity to the team and to give them an expert in tech. Superman is from another planet. That's pretty diverse."

gtfoh.. You CANNOT be serious comin out with that tripe.

I've read this and it's amazing! I absolutely love it! It's really different from what we know but that's kind of what makes it great. We get to see the heroes we grew up with in a different way. I guess DC's got what they wanted :P
And the last page is just awesome! XD

Anyone else disappointed in the length of of the Justice League #1?  With all the cover versions and stuff in the back, the actual comic seemed very short.  I liked the story and new look at the characters that were in there, but for the price and for a new re-launch, I was looking for more.

@G-Man: You should do a follow up article breaking down the printed vs digital versions of Justice League #1, they are not exactly the same; sound effects are missing or moved, speech balloons are moved or merged and I even found a rewrite in the digital version. It doesn't seem like much but people should know that there are differences, especially people that are buying a book because of a writer, those rewrites might not be written by the actual writer. A lot of the changes were probably done to fit the digital format better but I don't see much point in removing sound effects or rewriting text.

Ok, I'm a black South African and I'm not being racial or anything here. I don't mind Cyborg being on the team it's just that he feels more like a Teen Titan than a Justice Leaguer. Besides why take Martian Manhunter to Stormwatch, he belongs to Justice League. Anyway didn't MM already cover the whole racial diversity thing by posing as an African American most of the time? He is a Martian too, that's pretty diversed for me.

I thought Justice League #1 was pretty good, and I like the attitude of Batman and Green Lantern, they are definitely cocky as the article says and will be annoy if the tone throughout, but it creates the chance for these 'new' and apparently arrogant heroes to lose the attitudes and learn to work together which is more interesting than them just instantly getting along with little room to grow personality wise.

I'll add that I'm one of those 'new readers' I hear a lot of people talking about, so this relaunch has been pretty convenient considering how difficult it can be to jump in after so many years of stories and depth. With that said I can totally understand the hate.

I kind of liked the first issue.  I picked it up today, and the only glaring thing I didn't enjoy was GL's attitude.  I really disliked his cockiness, third person speech, and general a-holeishness.  I hope they humble him in later issues(CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!), because it'll be difficult to read otherwise.  I'm alright with them taking out MM and replacing him with cyborg, not happy about it, but it's not a total disaster for me.  One thing that made me scratch my head was the alternate costumes in the back of the book, especially for Aquaman.  The alternate one they tossed looked so much better then the one they went with..

So all in all, it was a good issue and I hope things get much better in the future.

the more i read reviews, conspiracy theories and other views of the new 52, i am pretty darn glad i bought this book! this is going to be an amazing ride. the DC i knew (i have a few trades and issues here and there from the 80s to the present) batman is much the same in this universe, superman is like spider man and batman(willing to take a challenge and be ballsy with it(batman) with a bit of snark(spidey)) and green lantern may just be a pretty boy with a bit of a tude. i can not wait to see what happens. bring on wednesday when the books begin to come out!

One thing we keep forgetting is that Batman was trying to tell Green Lantern that he sees signs of a fight and to be cautious. Green Lantern wasn't hearing any of it and just bum rushed into the GIANT HOLE IN THE BRICK WALL as if it were nothing suspicious going on, and then, yes, Superman hit Green Lantern. Maybe Superman heard Green Lantern bragging about being able to hunt extraterrestrials and that he was looking for Superman. This Superman might be used to people looking at him as weird, attacking him because he is an alien, and this time was hyper vigilant of another attack, and thus, struck Green Lantern.

"This Superman is a punch first, ask questions later. He knows he is powerful. He gives the impression that fighting a new foe would be something like a game. He's curious if it will even be a challenge."

Nah, I don't think so.

Personally. I've only been a Batman fan out of everything in the DC Universe.

Honestly no matter how much "they" say this aint a reboost. It is. I don't care what "they".

I do think that this is gonna be the best the for the DC Universe. Might even get me interested in other characters. Green Lantern seems like a different character which to me. I might pick up and give it a try maybe not though.

Does anybody know if they are gonna redo the Flash series.

@cruzer1: Don't you think that was kinda harsh? But anyway I love the fact that they have large egos. It makes it more realistic seeing as how they're super powered people. With Batman's skills, or Lantern's power ring, or Supes strength, arrogance and cockiness aren't too far behind. This was a great start
