Five Biggest Ways DC's 'The New 52' Has Changed Superboy

Is this the same Superboy we've known for the past few years? Here are some of the big changes. There WILL be some SPOILERS.

We're halfway through the first month of DC's 'The New 52.' We've looked at the changes with the Justice League, Superman and Batgirl. Superboy has evolved quite a bit over the years. From being a clone with an attitude in Reign of the Supermen to the heart of the Teen Titans, Conner Kent has risen to the top of the list of favorites among many readers.

With the new #1, there are some things that are familiar and others that are completely different. The very first covers shows an almost frightening image of what is supposed to pass for Superboy. With all those tubes and wires and mechanical arms, is the Superboy we know gone for good?

No Caption Provided

The good news is it's not as scary as the cover might lead you to believe. Here are the biggest differences to Superboy as a result of the 'New 52.' There will be some minor spoilers below. Be sure to read the issue to witness these changes (and others) as a result of Superboy #1. Check out our review here.

== TEASER ==

Superboy's Origin

No Caption Provided

There are some obvious changes. Writer Scott Lobdell has mentioned some of them. Originally he was created by Project Cadmus. This time around, he was created by scientist in a group called N.O.W.H.E.R.E.

Superboy is still the result of being cloned from alien and human DNA. The true intentions of N.O.W.H.E.R.E. remains to be seen.

The Women Involved With His Creation

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

Superboy has not one, but two women in his life. Not too shabby for someone that has only been alive for just over four months.

There's a little bit of controversy with the first, known as "Red" in this issue. Red is a "genius M.I.T. chick" that was brought in to work on the clone project. She is young and intelligent (she's also a doctor). The word on the streets (or at least the internet) is this is in fact Caitlin Fairchild. This is a huge change since Caitlin is originally from the Wildstorm universe. She was transformed into the powerhouse leader of Gen 13. It should be interesting to see how her character develops here.

The other woman is Rose Wilson who we all previously knew as Ravager, daughter of Deathstroke. Scott Lobdell has stated that it's possible Rose here never took on the Ravager identity. As for the nature of her character...you can discover that when you read the issue.

Superboy Has a New Attitude

No Caption Provided

Remember when Superboy first emerged from his cloning test tube? He immediately had a chip on his shoulder and declared, "Don't EVER call me Superboy!" Here, he has a more serene view on life. He is aware the scientists call him Superboy and that is his name. He shows signs of his immense power but is very calm about everything. He seems to be silently biding his time. Could he be a powder keg about to explode in the face of N.O.W.H.E.R.E.?

Superboy is Very Smart

No Caption Provided

I wouldn't say Superboy was dumb before but he wasn't really known for having all the answers. The Superboy we knew busted out of his test tube right away and started living his life on his own. This Superboy has been aware of his stay at the lab. His consciousness has spread equally throughout his body to his every atoms. While the scientists have been studying him, he's been studying them. He doesn't know how he knows things, he is just able to recall facts. This should add another layer to him in future adventures. It makes sense that he should have a super-brain if you consider who his 'parents' were before. The idea of him being able to outthink his opponents will change the need for him to simply smash things as a way out.

His Costume

No Caption Provided

A lot of heroes are getting updates to their costumes. Superboy is no exception. In his case, it's a containment suit provided by N.O.W.H.E.R.E. to monitor his telekinesis. We have to assume there's another reason that will pop up that will make him want to continue to wear it. From the covers and pages we've seen to issue #2 and 3 he's still wearing it. Maybe it'll help him control his powers. It's possible he'll simply be willing to do what the scientists tell him. But that seems too far out of character. He does have a lot of power and is aware of his surroundings. It's only a matter of time that he'll decided he wants to do what he feels like rather than what he's told.

Again from the previews, Superboy and Rose will be going out on what appears to be a mission of sorts. How well they get along remains to be seen. How long will he allow N.O.W.H.E.R.E. to study him? Will Red turn into the Fairchild from the Wildstorm universe. Which one will capture his heart first?

I actually loved the new changes with Superboy in this issue, especially his attitude. He's much more down-to-Earth and less of a angst-filled filled punk. Also, the super-smart addition was a really cool element to the issue.

Just got this a couple of hours ago! So excited to read it. I like the differences even if it does change things a bit from the pre-New 52 days of Kon-El. As for Connor going for either Red or Rose, I say that makes him the new age Archie then! Bring on changes, I'm on board. And Superboy is looking GREAT so far.

I totally agree with both of you, I was looking forward to this but I was a little hesitant because it kind of looked like they where going to make him like his young justice counterpart and although I love the show I am glad this is not the case. Firechild  for Teen Titans pleassssss!

Me too, but I will take Gen 13 characters anywhere I can get them... If she becomes a prominent character I may actually read Superboy.

@Gambit1969: But this opens the door for Gen 13. Establishing members in the DCU now. Who knows what could happen after this 'origin' story.

He did seem more interested in Rose than civilians on fire. I hate her but I guess it can't be helped, hopefully that will change when Cassie and the Teen Titans come in. And I am glad that he did not look as robotic as the cover suggested.

Um you got it wrong. Superboy didn't know what the answer was. He stole the answer from the kids need next to him and didn't realize that he did it. Notice the kids reaction.

they didn't specifically say that N.O.W.H.E.R.E. created Superboy....it seems to me that they've acquired him elsewhere and they're now trying to figure out how he was created and possibly how to make more of him

When I read Action I was worried how Superboy might read since I thought they would be too similar, but it seems like they kinda traded off on personality somewhat...

It is likely he extended his 'knowledge borrowing' to all the geniuses outside of the VR program.

I really loved the book. I had many expectations about this character and I really like the SCI-FI approach they gave to the character and the story. We do not know if at this stage of their origin Superman is dead, but the suspense of the story is well done. I enjoy it!

I really liked this. The thing I enjoyed the most was his power. I realize that they are what he originally had, but it seemed like they simply developed into Supermans powers unless they were (rarely) needed. It is so unique, not only to DCnU but comic in general, I think it is great, I have very high hopes for this series

Am i the only person that thought "Red" was drawn with her head backwards in that panel? The second thought/narration box is next to what appears to be a boob, and her head is facing the other direction. Not having read the book yet, I was kinda stopped dead until I scrolled down and saw the other picture to notice the weird rocket jets on her shoulder blades or whatever. Very 90s indeed.

Just got done reading it. I normally don't ind anything Superman releated interesting just don't like his character. I picked this up because I was getting some sort of techno organic superboy that wasn't what I got. What I got however I like a lot he reminds me of Doc Manhattan in a way loved the constant monologue.

im very upset because on an emotional and personality scale, this is in no way my Superboy. However, i still have hope that they will somehow fold most of his old personality into this new character (even if there is different reasoning).

I was surprised to discover how much I enjoyed this. I thought I might, at best, like it but would be still hesitant about having the character completely start from scratch again... but in the end I was just really sucked into the story and the character. It was one of my favorites this week.

Agreed, but for people who have read the comic notice that the red head says that the V.R program is designed to bring out the memories of his two Donors DNA thats why he was in Kansas on a farm,n Lex luthor is like the second smartest person in the world or something(not that supes is any less with his Super intelligence) but yeah that probably factors in there :)

If Rose isn't Ravager, what then of Jericho or Grant Wilson post reboot? Will Grant be reintroduced as a mainstay villain, or will DC just erase him from continuity? I think the reboot is interesting so far, but i don't like how they've castrated the wildstorm characters and essentially made them foils for DC's protagonists. Jim Lee sold out!

Caitlin as Red?  Interesting.  I think that would be interesting, especially if she ends up being activated as a Gen-Active.  But this allows for the Gen13 crew to show up in other comics.  I would love to see Roxxy or Sarah on the Teen Titans.

Perhaps Ravager will be some sort of multiple personality?  A way to possibly bring in one of the DV8s? Gem Antonelli (Copycat) would be be interesting to see.  I DO NOT want them to fuse Wildstorm characters with DC characters, I am just saying that Ravager could be a seperate personality of Rose.  Or make Gem Rose's nemesis?

I don't know ANYTHING about Wildstorm, Gen 13 or Caitlin Fairchild.  I know reading Flashpoint #5, the three universes were combined and if the census that this redhead is that character, okay, quite very plausible.

However, and again, since I don't know anything about the Wildstorm universe, when I read the issue, my initial reaction was the redhead was TESS MERCER from Smallville.  I know it's a TV show, and very separate from the comic universe, but now that it's cancelled, I thought they might integrate a little from the show...possibly.

If anyone caught the last season, when Conner was created, Tess took a motherly interest in him.  She had a large admiration for Lex Luthor (before she found out they were brother and sister), and since his alledged death, she thought she had a second chance at raising a new, better, more humane Lex.  That's before she found out he was half-Clark.

Anyway, Tess is well-versed in science and technology, and a redhead (obviously).  I just thought it would be a disservice to apply her to Lex's invalid sister Lena in the comics.  With this new relaunch, they have an opportunity to create her from scratch and give her a good role in the universe.  Whether she's related to Lex or not here may be a good story, but it's probably not necessary.

Although Fairchild seems to be the majority vote on this one, until it's confirmed, one can speculate :)

I was very wary about changes to Superboy, but I must agree with the majority of you, I like the new attitude and serene disposition. I always felt he should be a genius of sorts since he shares the genetic codes of Superman and Lex Luthor and now DC has done it. He seems as though he will be a formidable hero/foe and utilize his wit before his other powers... fascinating!

Bring on Fairchild and Ravager. I think that by the time he finally revolts he'll be taking Fairchild with him, and Ravager will be chaasing him until she realizes they're wrong.

While I do like that they seem to be madly hinting at Conner being crazy powerful, I don't really like the rest of the changes I've seen so far. Have to wait and see on krypto though, already missing the mutt.

It is nice to get a new clear origin for him since his original and the 'half kryptonian/half human' ones completely screwed each other, could have been better though.

DC seem to ignore his 90s book adventures, though pulling a few of his cast members before the reboot in VERY minor roles and still ignore continuity for said book.
