First Look: ULTIMATE FF #1

Embrace the future.

No Caption Provided

This April, witness the birth of a new team of super geniuses the likes of which the Ultimate Universe has never seen in ULTIMATE FF #1 – a mind-bending new series from blockbuster writer Joshua Hale Fialkov and artist Mario Guevara!

Though they survived the cataclysm, the Earth lay in ruins. And though Galactus and his Gah Lak Tus swarm was defeated – the Ultimate Universe is breaking apart, and fast. The world’s greatest minds – Sue Storm, Tony Stark, Sam Wilson and Machine Man must band together to solve problems too big to tackle alone.

As the new and improved Future Foundation, they are all that stands between us and cosmic level threats that would see the entire universe extinguished.

But world ending threats are not their only problem! And old foe has returned…and he’s joining their team?!Doctor Doom has resurfaced, and he is their only hope to stop the oncoming destruction! But what is Doom’s true agenda? And will the FF uncover it before it’s too late?

Don’t miss the blockbuster first outing of a new team for a new era. The stakes have never been higher this April in ULTIMATE FF #1!

really don't like the colour scheme going on here. I keep thinking of Sentinels. You'd of thought they would have given Falcon a much better mask seeing as they are some of the smartest people on the planet.

I hope its not ready yet, because right now it looks like one of the most terrible things I ever saw....

Looks like a amateur fan comic page.

Holy smokes, what is going on with Falcon on that alternative cover? Why are his arms so huge and his legs and head so tiny?

Anyway, interested in checking this out. Probably wait for reviews on this one though.

my god, Can the ultimate universe sink any lower? it just an insult to original creativity and tight editorial control that made ultimate universe such a hit 12 years ago.

this art is awful! why bring back any element of the least unsuccessful part of the ultimate universe: ultimate Fantastic four.

I await the Comic vine 5 Star Review

I'm kicking myself over not supporting this because it's UU related but I'm not a fan of the interiors. Both the art, the colors, and even the costumes don't look that good. But, I'll be open for it to grow on me as I am still excited for this.

The reason they are that colour is because of Galactus

I hated the ultimate fantastic four when Millar wrote it and I wanted to check this out but I'm already lost with who is on the team. I do not have a good feeling about this book lasting long.

Wait, if the 616 Future Foundation, which had stellar reviews, didn't sell, what makes them think this will? Statistically speaking, Ultimate based comics don't sell particularly well, and people just don't seem interested in the FF. Don't get me wrong, it looks like a pretty interesting series, but I just don't see it hanging on.

This book seems to have more in common, thematically, with Hickman's New Avengers. The Ultimate Future Foundation seems to be set up to act as the Ultimate Universe's Illuminati. There's no kids, no hijinks, etc.

To be honest, as a relatively new reader (and I know I'm about to get 50 messages telling me that I'm an idiot, or a "Marvel Hater") Marvel is a lot harder to get into then DC right now, and the Ultimate comics add on another layer of confusion for me. I think most people don't feel like juggling two universes of continuity. In fact, one of my reviewers for comics never even brings up the Ultimate universe when he does a Marvel review week. I feel bad that I don't support them, but I have limited funds, and I don't feel like I get the same bang for my buck with an Ultimate comic. Again, I'm not trying to offend anyone, this is just my experience as a new reader.

Right now after Cataclysm, the Ultimate books are going to experience a boost in sales, but it will most likely be temporary. In a few years Marvel may have to drop the Ultimate universe all together.

@micah: I have always found the ultimate universe very hard to follow. There is hardly any jumping on points and for me many of my favorite character from the 616 there ultimate counterparts are done right unlikable. I keep wanting to give it another chance but I feel this book will lose me as quick as all the others did.

What is the point of calling this by the same name as the 616 team? You see the actual Fantastic Four are a man, his best friend, his wife, and his brother in law. They share the same origin. They are kind of an indivisible unit (you an even see a "Platonic element" thing going on with fire, rock, sort of air (Sue), and sort of fluid (Reed)).

This is definitely more of a "Sue joins the Avengers" thing. Oh Machine Man is not COMPLETELY redundant (in relation to IM).

With no SHIELD around this might be a fresh change from the "SHIELD overviews everything" approach; it will be nice to see some characters cutting loose and doing their thing.

Is Doom supposed to be the original 1610 Doom, or Reed?

Ultimate Doc Doom is coming back? Didn't he get his head crushed by Thing? Oh well. Not like that's ever been enough to stop a comic book character for coming back.

@captainmarvel4ever: I hope it can get on track and stay strong in sales. For me the Ultimate Universe has been the source for so much innovation over the years and new radical designs, that work. The Ultimate Universe has had and will have influence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is the thing that got me into comics.

The Ultimate universe has been on life support for a good 5 or 6 years now and its time to pull the plug. All the "innovative" parts where eventually brought into the 616 universe and that universe got stronger with its variety where this one got stale. Fialkov has not live up to his promise since he got to Marvel and I would rather him write a 616 book instead of wasting away in the Ultimate universe.

This will be like Hickman's relaunch of the Ultimate universe, It will be big and flashy with so many fans of the Ultimate universe claiming how much better it is then the 616 universe but like every other relaunch it will not gain new readers because people do not care about the Ultimate universe anymore.

@micah: This isn't Innovation, this stupidity and desperation. Ultimate Marvel used to represent innovation modernisation and accessibility in the industry. really the difference between the normal universe and ultimate universe was the lack of stupid concepts like reality controlling cubes, giant purple guys who speak English and want to eat earth. as well as being innovative by allowing writers greater freedom by not being tied down in 40 years of continuity which in turned made accessible new readers. The current ultimate universe is completely in-accessible to new readers and instead of being the slicker version of the main universe, it's become the bizarro version of it. Its runs off gimmicks now like "hey what if captain america didn't stand in an election but still won it" each ill-thought idea merely makes it less assessable then before. Its like a dumping ground for Writers and artists marvel doesn't know what to do with now.

If marvel just killed it after Death of the Spiderman and then did a new Ultimate-esqe/New 52 style line it would of been a lot better. Give it another year and marvel will try another event to boost readership, it won't work (as they seem to have a become a jumping off point for UU) and the readership will continue to decline rapidly.

@micah: Well if the fans love the Ultimate universe as much as I have seen, I'm sure Marvel will do something to try and preserve some of the Ultimate universe, one way, or another. I still think it won't last (sorry), but generally if fans love something, then the writers will look out for you.

@novemberx2: I think it works best when its not another version of the 616. That's why I love the UU, its a universe were anything can happen. Captain America becoming president was a great idea, it finally put the guy who represents and embodies America into the drivers seat, only for him to figure out running the government was his worst nightmare

@micah: No I'm lost because I have no idea why this team was assembled and why Iron Man or Falcon are on it when should they not be on the Ultimates? Where are Johnny and Ben also why is the Ultimates made up of a group of teenagers?.

From what I remember (I quit the Ultimate Universe after Ultimatum) was the Fantastic Four was a train wreck, We had evil Doctor Doom wannabee Reed. Then we have Sue who is just a female 616 Reed Richards and the final nail in the Sue Storm coffin for me was the proposal to Ben.

So I'm lost and I'm attempting to figure out if I should care about this book. I love the F4 and FF but the Ultimate versions of them have always come off as being different for sake of it and often read like a bad what if.

@br_havoc: After Cataclysm the Ultimates have been crippled with the supposed death of Cap, and Hulk has been in lock up ever since he tried to help reed take over the world. Which is why the new Ultimates are teenagers. They represent the next generation of heroes since so many of the old guard have died or have been exhausted emotionally and physically since Cataclysm. You should at least check out the first issue, everyone can agree that the Ultimate Universe has gotten better since Ultimatum.

@micah: I might try the first storyline ( I never judge a comic off of one issue) but I will admit what you have told me it does not sound appealing. Ultimatum was some of the worst story telling that was ever published from Marvel so it's not saying much that this is better. I mean I hate to sound cynical it's just the Ultimate Universe was so unlikable the last time and honestly I have no interest in seeing this line up of the FF.

@br_havoc: I hate how Ultimatum has destroyed a lot of new interest in the UU. I hated the event but what's done is done. Point is the, UU since Ultimatum to me has almost gotten back to the level of quality and story telling it had before the event. Especially Jonathan Hickmans latest Ultimates run. Cataclysm itself was a pretty explosive event. If you give it a try I don't think it will massively disappoint you. Besides the first story arc of Ultimate FF will have the return of Ultimate Namor and a new Atlantis, so that's pretty cool huh?

@novemberx2: If it gets a 5 star review it will be because who ever reviewed it (most likely Matt) enjoyed it and obviously thought it deserved a 5. And as a professional critic who has been exposed to hundreds of differerent comicbook genres through his career, and knows what he's doing, thought the book was impressive.

@micah: Honestly Ultimatum was the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Ultimate universe. I think the people that left ( Like me) where looking for a reason to leave and they found it in that terrible event. I mean every crossover of that event sucked as bad as the main thing. I'm a big Hickman fan but I was still burnt on the UU so I did not bother picking it up and I will admit to you I was hoping that Cataclysm would of been the end of the UU and make Galactus a huge villain again but such was not the case.

Your talking to the wrong guy about Namor I would much rather have Reed Richard and his road to attempting to redeem himself then Namor or Doom. I mean what is the big deal for Namor coming back Sue needs a love interest? Also since you read it what happened to her and Ben?

@br_havoc: I think Reed will be joining the Team. FIALKOV stated that he loves Ultimate Reed and has plans for him. So I expect him to show up. I think Ultimate Namor coming back is pretty cool, if you read the Ultimate Fantastic Four arc he was introduced in it had great action and a massive change by having him be Atlantis worst criminal instead of actual royalty, having him be Sues love interest wouldn't be bad if it means we get to see more of him. And to answer your question on what happened to her and Ben, they both are romantically involved and survived the event

@micah: Like I said I might check it out with Ultimate Reed or 616 Doctor Doom because there the same damn character. I would like to see him attempt to redeem himself but I doubt that will happen they seem to be happy having him be the big bad insane villain. A Namor/Sue relationship would not work in either universes there is only one thing Namor loves his own ego :p

Hmm well at least they kept that, I mean I dislike that Sue and Reed are not together in the UU but I understand the writers wanted to try to explore some other options, I just thought that scene with Ben was so terrible no woman in the history of the word says to a man after she divorces her husband. " I love the way you have always looked at me Ben." Seriously he has objectified her for years but she loved it all along -_-.

I admire you trying to sell this premise to me and I might check out the FF or maybe even the Ultimates but if they do not win me over fast there gone. Marvel is putting out so many good 616 books right now that space on my pull list is limited.

@br_havoc: Thanks for hearing me out. I also thought the way she jumped into Bens arms after divorcing Reed was weird, but its exactly the kind of monumental change you can expect from the UU. Also If you check out FF hang on to at least issue 3, that's when their major Atlantis story arc begins and Doom goes one on one with Namor.
