First Look: SILVER SURFER #1

Take a ride on the cosmic skyways.

This March, the sentinel of the skyways blasts off for an all-new adventure in the thrilling SILVER SURFER #1 – from New York Times Bestselling writer Dan Slott and critically acclaimed artist Mike Allred! Silver Surfer #1 continues the exciting wave of All-New Marvel NOW! launches with a fresh take on Norin Radd and his cosmic quests!

“It’s fun, it’s full of adventure, and it wears its love of the Marvel Universe on its sleeve,” says Slott in an interview with Marvel.com.

The universe is big. Bigger than one could ever imagine, even one such as the Surfer. Propelled by the mighty Power Cosmic, long has he voyaged alone – journeying from star to star. But soon he’ll discover that the best way to see it…is with someone else. Meet the Earth Girl who’s challenged the Surfer to go beyond the boundaries of the know Marvel U – and into the strange and unknown!

“One of the limitations of the Surfer character is that, by his nature he’s alone most of the time,” says Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “So right off the bat, we’re giving him somebody new to bounce off of: the new character Dawn Greenwood. The two of them wind up traveling together, and this gives the Surfer somebody to bond with and relate to along the journey.”

Hop on board and hang ten when the most far-out series of All-New Marvel NOW! makes its epic cosmic debut this March! Hang on! This is the all-new SILVER SURFER #1!

Love that Francavilla variant

Posted by TheManInTheShoe

Love the covers. It looks nice, but I hope the dialogue holds up.

*cough* Silver down *cough*

Looks good! I like allred's art.

Posted by Batman404

Allred's an artist you either love or hate. I am the latter so I won't be picking this up. I don't really hate his art style I just don't think it works on most books including this one.

Posted by ArturoCalaKayVee

I think this art is absolutely awesome and fun. Can't wait to pick up this new Dr. Who Silver Surfer series. :P

Looks pretty cool.

I really don't like the interior art.

This book... DIVINE!

Posted by ThanoStomp

Uh. So disappointed.

Love Allred, love the Surfer, love cosmic books. Slott? Not so much.

Posted by DonFelipe

This is crazy stuff and I'm not sure yet if it's the good or bad type of crazy?
Are these continuous or random pages?

I love the minimalistic Francavilla cover! ... It just doesn't seem to fit in here.

Posted by Dark_Guyver

@themanintheshoe: Haha! Glad I'm not the only one who thought that was stupid.

Slott writing surfer has me worried. Surfer is my second favorite Marvel character behind Spider-Man. And from I've read in different previews has got me a little nervous on the quality of this book.

That art looks horrible.

Looks awesome. Hoping to get my hands on the Francavilla variant.

Love that Francavilla variant

I haven't bought a variant in a long time.... I will buy this one

The Francavilla cover is fantastic.

Not a huge fan of Allred's art here. I wish it was more styled after the SS we saw in the Infinity infinite comics.

As much as I love the Surfer, this book isn't appealing to me.

I'd put it on my wall

Slott, why don't you get another Job? Please.

I think Allred if great for some stuff, FF being one of them. I just don't think it works for a cosmic series like this. It's too cartoony

What is up with marvel and terrible artists all of a sudden? Minus Skottie Young

Posted by HDTran

I love the Allreds, their sensibilities are awesome. It's one of the things that makes current Marvel books awesome in that different styles are all featured and used in the right ways (more retro/fun/or minimalist styles are reserved for less mainstream) whereas house styles are used for the more mainstream books.

Edited by BR_Havoc

Allred is perfect for Surfer, For anyone saying it's to cartoony to work you just do not know how good Allred is at showing emotions in characters faces and eyes, He is also great at building interesting layout's similar to Jim Steranko.

If Slott brings his A game this book will be wonderful.

Posted by HDTran

Totally agree @br_havoc! I love their work on FF so much--they're proven for cosmic and high science. And like you said, the emotions they convey is sooo good.

Posted by InkInk

@viin: Wait your call Mike Allred a terrible artist? Just because he is ultra stylized does not take away from the fact his work is very good his facial expressions alone make him a great artist.

Just because you do not like his work does not make him a terrible artist.

Hmmm, good to see the Surfer getting a series but I'm not sold on that artwork

Edited by MadeinBangladesh

such good looking art. Really shocked that people are not a fan of this art.

Posted by fables87

Kind of want this for the art...

Posted by KingWillie

Cool, but not a fan of that art.

Posted by Renchamp

I am on the fence on this one. I love Mike Allred and this book looks sweet, but I have never been able to get into a cosmic series. I may dip my toes in the water. We'll see.

Not a fan of the art.

@madeinbangladesh: @br_havoc: I agree with you two. I actually can't think of a book that would better suit the Allred's art. I think a lot of people that don't like his art, more than likely don't like Laura's coloring style.

Normally I don't judge books by their art but what the hell is that?

I've never wished there was a light switch in a comic book before.

Posted by TheFirstLantern

everybody's talking about the Francavilla cover(which is great) but the Animal by Samnee and Skottie Young cover are great.

Edited by Maddpanda531

I'm been going through serious Allred withdrawal after FF ended. Needless to say, I'm reeeaaaaalllly looking forward to this series.

Edited by Teerack

That cover is amazing. I really hope this book is better then the preview. I didn't like the preview at all.

This art is epic, finally some unique art with a style of its own and not just going with the flow

You know Mike Allred has had at least one ongoing book at marvel for like 5 years now.

Ugh, I miss early 90's SS.

I don't want a "fun" Silver Surfer ongoing, and I sure as hell don't want the art done by that douche Allred who's been working on Future Foundation.

Completely wrong direction for the character...

Posted by V_Scarlotte_Rose

This'll be my first purchase of a Silver Surfer, and I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like.

Dawn looks kind of younger in this. I wonder if she's being wearing ladybird dresses for a long time, or if this is just to make it easier to recognise her in the past.

Posted by jwalser3

Boy oh boy. I was really looking forward to this book, but after seeing the interior...I'll have to sit on it, if I'm going to buy it or not.

Posted by Z3RO180

The art is soo horrible

Edited by MaccyD

@teerack: Yup he did FF and a lot of creator-owned stuff, just going against the hate here :P

Edited by Jake Fury

Allred is a great artist but I have no interest in him doing a SS book.

Edited by snarkybits

Love that animal cover. Can't wait!

Posted by derf_jenkins

I'm not a fan of silver surfer really, but I'm giving this a chance.

The young dawn is from 20 years ago when Surfer first visits Earth for Galactus.

There are people who don't like Allred's art.
